@@JessedoesDIYturned out good...thanks for the lessons. I'll watch them all a 2nd round...fyi you can get a caulking tool for the forcing/smoothing process. On an alternative note...I noticed you were wearing an elbow brace...my elbows are killing me from arthritis and hammering (plus a recent stupid fall...I'm a clutch...sigh). Do you find the elbow brace helpful or get in the way? Like does it allow full range of movement?

Thanks, glad you like it. It's definately worth a second watch to get familiar with it. I've messed my elbow up at martial arts, but yeah it definately helps. It's a compression fit and has a support brace in it and I find it definately take out the sting and allows me to still lift things with it on that I couldn't without it

For my OSB siding, I mixed white sand in with my paint and rolled it on. It hid the unsightly texture of the chip board and give it a durable, rock hard stucco type finish. Worked beautifully. It also gave the outside more protection. Our heavy snow winters here in Yakima, Washington, get into the low single digits with a wind chill. The look is more expensive without breaking my pocket book. T-1-11 siding here is $100 for a 4x8 sheet! I used about $2 worth the sand and my OSB was $16 a sheet instead.
@JessedoesDIY

That's an interesting idea, thanks for sharing. I would have liked to do T-1-11 siding myself but it was the start of Covid and supplies were out everywhere. I wish It only got that cold here in the winter. It's -20 here already with half a foot of snow, and can get down to -40 in December and January

Thanks so much for this series. I'm about to embark on my first structural woodwork journey as I put put together my own shed building project. I see you use some really good, dare I say ingenious, tricks to get the work done efficiently that I'll be incorporating, like using the speed square to make perfect cross cuts on the joists in the field without having to go back to a compound saw. Really nice job, I watched the whole series and plan on building this shed this summer. Couple questions why did you use osb instead of t1-11 for the siding? Cost savings? Do you have a materials list? How much paint did it take?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Thanks, glad you liked it! I would have loved to go with T1-11 siding, but I built it during Covid and there was none at any store in my area at the time. But that siding is actually just a routered texture and primed OSB board anyways and I had to keep going with the build, so I just used regular OSB. It's a correct building material to use plus it's all I had. There is a materials list at the bottom of the videos and a complete list in the last video. For paint I'd go with 1 can of primer, and I used 1 can of colour on the body, and 1/2 can for the trim. And a couple tubes of caulking. Each can was a gallon. Good luck on yours and keep me posted! Any more questions feel free to ask

Thanks. As I said, I'd prime it first and then add 2 thick coats of paint to it. It will be water resistant for a long time but if you want full on water proof, I'd use a vinyl siding over it and not install the trim since the siding will come with its own caps. Hope that helps

I may vent the soffit with that white poly stuff. I'm going to have gutters and electric. Subfloor is getting peel and stick tiles. Has hurricane window and vented window in the new regular exterior door and deadbolt lock. Put storm guard under shingles. Gonna house wrap then siding. We worked on this one year. I originally found your channel when I was searching for how to build a shed floor. I am extremely DIY oriented. I built the computer I'm typing on, the desk the computer is on, the truck in the driveway, etc. I mostly just watch videos to get more ideas and a better understanding of things long before I ever do them. I gotta say man, I watched every minute of this series and am going through other videos of yours. Very nice guide, nice video editing, very clear audio and camera work. I love that you put links to literally every tool and material in the description. I am going to be honest, I never even considered that there were affordable electric paint sprayers available. So thanks for that, I believe I'll pick one up. I gotta get going on my shed soon, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks so much! I'm happy I could help clear things up for you and that you really liked it! Cool, can't wait to see it done, you'll have to keep me in the loop. Depending on the size of incline, if its withing a few inches, just a bed of gravel tapered off to level from one end to the other with mild tamping to compress it, then stone on top of it should be all you need. Good luck on yours!

Well done! Making my shed doesn’t look intimidating now! My only critique is not using wood glue in some areas for added strength and you didn’t wood putty some of the holes which stand out in the white paint areas😂, just my OCD kicking in! Enjoyed all 5 videos!

New sub, great set of videos....I have a shed...but it needs some love...I had new asphalt shingles put on last fall...."you get what you pay for"...but I couldn't do it physically, I had a couple of Amish kids looking for a job, they are well known for good work here in Pa. Sadly I have a roof top inside full of nails over head....wasn't like that before. I can also see the day light, from inside the shed. Somehow the roof is separated from the top sides. You can see nails through those areas too. I don't know what to do. I'm just gonna have to spray some of that foam stuff on the inside I guess...to seal it. The bottom is getting very weathered,and needs some fixing. But the most I can do is add some foam spray and paint. Unless you have any ideas for me.Thanks for the great videos..😉😉
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
That's awesome, welcome to the crew! Unfortunately yeah, I live by that motto because I've lost out too many times in the past. Without seeing it, it's hard to say but it almost sounds like part of the roof may need to be re-skinned with new plywood since it's been water damaged, I'm guessing. Paint goes a long way to sealing wood too, but I'd avoid too much of the foam since it isn't a fix, it will make a huge mess. Sorry I don't have better news. Thanks for watching tho!

Since it’s been about a year, how well has it lasted? I know that for most paint primer mixes you have to do two coats, it looks like you did just one?!? What king of paint did you use and what caused you to do OSB for the siding instead of LP smart siding?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
It'll actually be 3 years in about 4 months and it still looks like the day I built it. I was going to do an update video later this year actually. I have a 1 year update video. I did one thick coat at the time knowing I'd have to recoat at probably around the 3 year mark as opposed to 5-7 years, and I'm going to recoat it all this year. Not because it's getting worn out, it's just getting thin in a few spots is all and outdoor paint is designed to be layered on over the years to build up a thick coat. I just used the house brand for Canadian Tire (hardware store) outdoor paint, any brand will work really because they'll all need to be recoated at some point. I wanted smart siding but it was at the start of Covid and it was sold out everywhere. But smart siding is just OSB anyways that has a routered pattern in it and a coat of primer on one side anyways

@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
After a few coats of paint it should, yup. You may still have the odd piece flake up in the first couple years just from not being glued too well to the sheet. But after you get 2 coats on when you build it, and another coat on in a couple years it should have a good base. After that it should be maintenance paint every 5-7 years to keep it pretty. Glad you liked the videos!

Thanks, I appreciate it! I'm glad you liked it. Oh no, the roof was shingled but I didn't have time to film that because of an inbound blizzard. It was being done while I was finishing final details inside and out. I decided to film the roof structure instead because that was more important and people could decide whatever roofing material they wanted to use

@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Awesome! It's absolutely possible. If you want it horizontal you'd have to frame the area like I did with the door. But you can go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy shed windows and it can install vertically between 2 studs in the wall, just cut out the hole in the sheeting with a saw once the wall is standing and screw it on, no modification to the shed. Then make sure to caulk it from the outside before painting

@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
The OSB has some natural weather resistan e built into it from all the glue adhesive in it it just needs a top seal coat is all. Paint is a form of sealer. So like u said, as long as you keep up on the maintenance of a coat of paint every few years as needed, it'll last a few decades just fine. After a few coats of paint it'll really build up a good thick coat for protection.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I didn't need the weed membrane because of the full rock base that's been down for years. But if you are laying a fresh rock base down then yeah, feel free to. I also didn't need to insulate the roof, unless you're talking about the shingles, then yes, it has shingles on it. The OSB is plenty strong enough. Proper building practices were followed when selecting materials for this shed

@JessedoesDIY 2 месяца назад
Sorry for the late response. I could build the whole thing today for about $1800 to have it as you see it, all done. You'll always get more for your money building it if you can. Remember that even if you found a kit for the same price, they need to make money on it so they will omit studs and maybe go 24" on center, possibly thinner sheeting and cheaper hardware and brackets. Hope that helps

I was asking myself the same thing @blakspark13 but regardless of price, doing this project has taught me so much about building and construction. Haha thanks! That was my plan, make it so easy and clear that everybody can do it, so I'm glad you'll be giving it a go! I may still retrofit a window I to mine this spring....if spring ever shows up. I'm in Saskatchewan and it's literally blizzarding right now...in late April lol. Paint is holding up perfectly. Sounds like he either isn't putting enough on, or isn't using a good exterior paint. The thing with outdoor paint is that it really gets good and strong after it's been layered up. I put some paint on when it was done, and another coat the year after (but you could do another withing a day or even months) and then you should be good for every 5 years or so to keep it at its best.

Great build. I’m planning to build something similar but a little bigger than that to store all my camping/hiking/backpacking supplies. I dont have any experience in building, which brings me to my question. I really do hope to see your reply soon because every time i imagine building the shed i face one problem that i don’t have the answer to. So here it goes: how do you make sure the beams ( or skids ) directly on the floor are straight and parallel to reach other and one of them isn’t oblique or something like that? Because with a level, you can only tell if they’re laying flat and well, level. But what if one of them is a little bit sitting obliquely.. how do you make sure that they’re all straight and parallel to each other? I know this question may be stupid but i really dont have any experience in building and i always had this question in mind whenever i see a shed build video. Anyhow, great great great build this was so fun to watch. I also hope to see an update video on how the shed lasted two years later. Thank you!
@ItsAlex-aj
@ItsAlex-aj 11 месяцев назад
Update; i just saw your two year update, AMAZING!!
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 11 месяцев назад
Thanks, I'm glad you like it! For the floor skids you'll get them as flat and level as you can at first. Lay a 2x4 down or a tape measure so you know where the side wall length will be and approximately where they will sit. Level them side to side checking where the crown is. If you look straight down the length of it you'll see the crown or beand of the board. Lay it crown up, so the bow is up. This way when the shed is sitting in it, it resists bowing, just like the floor framing I showed. Then with them good side to side, Lay a floor joist on them like I showed, using the fattest 2x4 you have and check it for level. Adjust as necessary with rock under the low spot. Then do the other side. Once they are good at that point then build the floor frame. Attach it to the skids and check the floor frame for level. If you need to adjust anything or see light under a skid somewhere, now is the time to add some more rock in that spot. Slide the frame around a bit and even smack it with a hammer down to settle it and check again. Watch my floor video a couple times and you'll see me doing these steps. You'll just use natural crushed rock as well, not gravel. Rock allows water to drain away keeping the skids dry. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions! I'm glad you liked the series!!!

@@JessedoesDIY thanks for the reply i really appreciate it! How do you make sure they’re laying straight and not diagonal?

Anytime. Part of it's by eye, part of it is by using your floor framing joists to get them close. Then when you square the floor up after the frame is attached it'll be all good. I explain it in the floor video

Great video series! I'm no carpenter or DIY-er, but I've learned a few things here and there from my brother-in-law who's a carpenter. We just finished putting in tongue and groove hardwood flooring. I feel I'm capable enough to build a shed myself. I'll be doing an 8'×12' and was originally gonna do hardwood for my frame, but I'm contemplating switching to treated pine instead, also using CDX plywood as opposed to OSB as that's all we have here in Belize 🇧🇿. I wasn't able to fully understand all of the terminologies or certain explanations, but I still believe I'm capable enough of building it. I will be having it on posts, though, as I live on an island off the coast and are prone to hurricanes 🌀, so that's about the only difference other than the roofing! My roofing will be 26 guage corrugated metal roofing. Here's to hoping I don't screw it up! 🤣😂
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
Thanks, glad you liked it! For sure you can build it, doesn't take many tools and just a bit of know how. Treated pine, I'm guessing, will be less expensive there and it's plenty strong and will last decades. At least here it's less expensive and actually we don't even have hardwood here like that readily available, and what we do have is insanely expensive for furniture only. The terminology doesn't matter too much as long as you understand the process. Ahhh good ol hurricanes, yeah you'll definitely want it anchored down. I almost, almost did metal roofing on mine and if I did it again I probably would. Good luck on yours!
