This video is a continuation of our ''How to build a foundation on wetland in Accra'' video. For the first video, we gave you a walkthrough of the processes we used to build the foundation of one of our residential projects on a wet land in East Legon Accra Ghana. This video is a continuation of the building from the foundation all the way to the roofing stage (excluding finishing touches).
We walk you through the process of block work, form work for the columns, lintel, installation of roof members and the installation of the roof. It is quite a comprehensive video of putting up a building to the roof level. We hope that you enjoy this video while you learning about what it takes to build your dream home.

Very professional and to the point! It would be great if you included estimated costs for the various stages as you work along. I'm particularly interested in costs relating to the use of pre-stressed beams/blocks for foundations and roof/flooring versus the 'traditional' ways where lots of iron rods are used. @Jacobwestgh
@Jacobwestgh 3 года назад
For the foundation, it took us a little over 6 weeks and this was because of the challenges we faced with the land. Had it not been the case, we would have done it in about 4 weeks. The work on the ground floor superstructure took a little over 4 weeks. First floor to lintel also took a little over 4 weeks to complete. The concrete roof took about 3 weeks and the whole roof took 3 days to complete (2 days to fix the roof members and 1 day to install the aluminium roofing sheets). These durations may vary depending on a number of factors but for this particular project, that is how long it took for us to do the various phases.

Pre-stressed beams or rib & block slab are great. However could you explain why no wire mesh was laid on block prior to the casting of the concrete as is done with this method in other jurisdictions.
@Jacobwestgh
@Jacobwestgh 3 года назад
The beams used in this process have steel reinforcement woven into them. This provides us with the adequate strength we need for that particular floor. In the instance where we covered a much larger area and was expecting a lot of load on the floor, we would have used additional steel reinforcement before casting.

I hear for two storey one has to use 6no 16mm rods (mild). 2. Also, what is the size of the rods in the columns and the type (mild or high tensile). 3. What is the advantage of using the 'fast floor' and why was same not used for the second floor?

I noticed that the roof slopes towards the rear, into a sort of gutter. During heavy rainfall, water would not be thrown off the roof to the ground but will be collected in that gutter. How does that work?
@Jacobwestgh
@Jacobwestgh 3 года назад
We have installed roof spouts in the space you see at the back of the building. All rain water that falls into this area is immediately evacuated from the roof to the base of the building. Unlike the house behind which has pipes sticking out, the pipes from this building will be wrapped around the building so that all the rain water will be collected into one pipe at the base of the building. This way, water can either be allowed to flow into the drains or be harvested into water tanks.

Hi Jacob, is there any reason why hollow blocks are not used throughout the building process, I had a house built in the Caribbean where this method was used, also water pipes and ducting for wiring were put in place whilst blocks were going up ( inside of block work) thus saving chisling out of blocks. I've watched a few building projects on the continent and all seem to use solid block work. Your vids are a pleasure to work brother 👊🏿🇯🇲🇬🇧
@Jacobwestgh
@Jacobwestgh 3 года назад
When putting up a storey building, you want the base to be as solid and as heavy as possible so that when you go higher, your building gets lighter. This is why at the base of the building (aside the beams and blocks for the foundation) we used only solid blocks and thick columns and then when we got to the first floor we used hollow blocks for the block work with lighter columns. If the building is lighter at the top than the base, the chance of the building collapsing is very low as compared to if the weight was the same from ground up.
@barrytelesford5265
@barrytelesford5265 Год назад
@@Jacobwestgh we also use hollow foundation blocks in the Caribbean which is thicker and heavier than blocks used for walls but those blocks are fill with concrete for added strength too. what i do realize from watching several videos of house construction in Africa is that mortar between blokings in thicker than what i would see in the Caribbean. I wonder why is that?

Rich Commodore from experience I will not advise that. A lady in France building next to my own in Dakar did exactly that. The roof started taking pressure and have to spent another £8000 for my builder to rectify that for her. May also for us we do the locally precast beams was the reason. Let's see what Jacob thinks.
