Part 2: • How to build a Table S...
In early 2017 I felt the urge to build a new table saw. This is the first part of my series "Compact Table Saw". This part shows the making of the compact table saw's motor unit. For materials I decided to use mainly plywood. Plywood is strong, dimensionally stable and wear resistant at the edges. For the Motor of the saw I used my Bosch PKS 66.
The most interesting feature of this saw is the trunion tilt mechanism. Though it requires some accuracy and planning to make this mechanism actually work, it allows the saw blade to stay at it's place at the surface of the table even when the saw it tilted. The secret is that the trunions allow for a tilting axies that is excatly in plain with the surface of the table top.

Saw your video. Impressive. Do you have plans for building this? Would love to build one since my Craftsman Table Saw has a broken gear that Sears has discontinued and won't replace.

Ball bearings are always a good touch. My cheap ancient table saw uses fine pitch threaded rods for movement of one axis and it always gets caked in dust and becomes really stiff. But it doesn't look like yours is exposed in the same way so I think you're is fine. Good video as always.

Hello Cosmas. Safe to say you promoted yourself onto my most admired homemade tablesaw builder with this :D I hope you are still planning onto finishing the series because I am eager to (poorly) attempt to build it. I have one question about this part. I love how you solved the raise/lower mechanism, the sliding bearing block is awesome. my only concern is, is there a good chance of dust/chip getting into the slide and limiting the travel? I was wondering if it was better or worse to cut the slots for the bearing motion all the way through the plywood panels, to possibly allow for cleaning every once in a while? Another question I have is how do you change the blade? I see your saw has a button operated spindle lock, which is similar to my makita 5705R I plan on using, and yours seem to be hardly if ever accessible when the saw is mounted. does it work to just pinch and hold the blade while tightening the retaining bolt?

You should pay more afention to your personal safety ex. using push sticks or push blocks, crosscut sled etc Sometimes your fingers are too close to the blade and that crosscut using the fence has big potential risc of kickback Take good care of your health 👍

Here in California you just used almost 60 dollars worth of wood just on this saw motor holder. Wood here in this crazy over taxed state has more than double in price since I started woodworking 15 years ago. I am building one now so I can get a table saw with my own custom features. But I would spend less $ if I just just purchased one of the low end portable table saws.

Hi, can you estimate what is the weight of the whole thing? I want to do this with steel and industrial motor, which I guess will be like 3-4 times heavier. So far I plan on using lead screw 24x5 C45 or bigger C15, but I actually have no idea if it is enough and what will be.

I have made the lift already. But thought if the lift consisted of two blocks in serial on the threaded rod, both with a "link" and without the pin. I wonder if this would result in a saw lifting rather than tilting up. Thus allowing a riving knife. I may upgrade in the future.

Circular saws suffer from several problems. 1.) they are under powered 2.) they are direct drive 3.) In the US they are115 volts 4.) They have 7 1/4" blades thus limited depth of cut.

Dear Cosmas Bauer, First of all congratulations for the beautiful project, I have already shown your video to several Brazilian colleagues who, like me, are lovers of amateur cabinetmaking, everyone found their work excellent. I was looking for a solution like this for my cutting mechanism. I would like to know if you would detail more about the turning mechanism for 45 degrees, if possible explain how you defined the exact location should position the pivot of rotation in relation to circular saw. Already grateful. Jânsle Fernandes

Cosmas thank you for sharing. I'm getting tired of living with my badly made homemade saw so i'll start a build like yours. But in your arrangement the ball bearings for the slide won't roll unless enough play so you could be safe just with a solid sliding guide. Please don't take as smart ass comment i've made several devices with this basic error? Regards. Peter

The bearing in iron one can tilt a little, which is necessary for the tilt mechanism. The wooden one does not do that.

Cosmas hey, I'm also an amateur hobbist woodworker and I admire well done projects. My question is this. Do you get any clogging, due to saw dust, in the up and down mechanism holding the saw, that creates any problem. I got the idea because the fit has to be tight. I would appreciate your response.
