There is a ditch alley behind my house where the city takes care of and my dogs keep digging under the fence and escaping. And this is what I need to do. Hi Steve - Thank you for this wonderful video. Is is possible to post how to make the top cap on this fence?
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 3 года назад
Frank the top cap is just a 1- 1/2 strip from a 5/4 PT board ripped on my tablesaw placed on the front of the fence boards and screwed from the backside . It just supports the tops from twisting and ads a clear line along the top for a better look.

Hi! Thank you so much for this video, it's exactly what I'm looking for! I have a wooden hog-wire fence (so like a chain link fence but the frames/rails and posts are all wood) that is 4 feet tall. Do you think the posts will be able to hold the weight of 6 foot boards? Or is there something you can recommend to add stability without having to dig up the old posts?

@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 5 лет назад
MostlymoparIH I would have built the fence totally different . No brackets at all just carnage bolts and 2x4 studs on both sides and countersink the nuts flush with the studs . His call and he didn't care really about a fence at all. He never goes into his yard anyway so for him he was happy with it as it is.

Hi Kathleen , Mine are every 5 feet . 10 feet is far too wide but you could put a post in between like a regular wooden fence as it would really stiffen it up a lot .

I'm thinking it would be easier. One 2x4x6 attached to every pole as long as the poles are not spaced too far apart. You would need some extra fence supports as I did depending on the length of the fence as it does get heavy so mid way and end supports are needed for wind protection. Check with your city to make sure it is ok to build .

Stephanie, let me know how it turns out! I'm hoping to make a horizontal fence about 5 feet tall, 90 feet long. Gotta check with my town first to make sure it's okay. I hope your project goes well!

Thanks Paivi its a shared fence. The fellow next door did not want boards on his side so I built it as is and next year to the end with flower boxes.

Paivi it was odd since i was going to pay for his side too but he really does not even go in his back yard or cut the grass . Not an outside person , very nice quiet fellow that works and sleeps and has no time to look at a fence maybe :)

Good looking. If your neighbor wished to do the same, how would it look and what would they do? I ask for my neighbor and I share a chain link fence and wish to make a wood fence from it. What would you do? Should we take the chain link off first?
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 5 лет назад
I have a dog so I left the fencing on as I built it. My neighbor did not want to spend any money on a fence since he never uses his yard but he was fine with what I built. If your neighbor wants a wooden fence just remove the wire and put wooden posts in if you both want a fence. I will show the finished fence this month with some additional ideas.

@@SteveRobReviews We would wish to keep the metal posts in so we wouldn't have to remove them with the concrete, etc. Thanks

@@sojourneroftheland You could screw a stud to the clamped in stud between the steel posts and shim it out to be flush if you have a 2 inch post. I have a 60 foot fence so I will put in a fence support and show it in june . A short fence should be fine.

They said the good side is always to your neighbor. Did you ask permission to them and did you get the permit from your local to put a wood fence over the chain link. I'm in california and I really like to put a woodfence over for privacy.

hi do i have to use 2x4 or can I use 1x6
@SteveRobReviews

1x6 is only 3/4 of an inch thick so I suggest 3/4 is too thin to nail or screw too.

How much is the spacing
@SteveRobReviews

3/4" , works well at providing privacy as well as letting the wind blow between boards.

Dear Rob, I read below your neighbor didn't mind the fence and screws showing on their side. Question for you, Did your neighbor go halves on the money of the fence? or did you pay for the full price. What if your neighbor doesn't want it but yet you still own part of the fence and the wood fence is on your side, does your neighbor really in the end have a say? Look forward to hearing from you!

I paid for it all , my buddy next door likes the fence so it's all good.

@@SteveRobReviews thank you. Are you able to help me out with the second question though. Because if you are building it n your property line and it's attached to chain link fence that you had paid half for from the previous owner. thanks so much Steve. And you did a great job on the fence.
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 3 года назад
Not sure what the second question is but the chain link fence was installed prior to both of us buying our houses. My buddy next door just said go ahead and build the fence as I like and the fence looks exactly like a fence built on my side as so many would build if they left the chain link as is. He is happy with the fence and added privacy so yes you must get permission first or just build a separate fence on your side as you wish . Cheers

@@SteveRobReviews thanks. We might have to go this route depending on neighbors final decision. Now another question where do you find those steel clamps for the back you attached to the 2x4's. You mentioned in one of your other videos you made your own which we wouldn't be able to do but they cost you $27.99. I live in Canada can you buy them at big blocks stores?

www.cooperindustries.com/content/dam/public/bline/Resources/Library/catalogs/pipe_hangers/pipe_hangers_and_supports/Clamps.pdf As you can see each clamp comes in a set or two sides as you would only use one side per 2x4 stud. The part numbers are there but finding a local supplier will be easy to find just phoning around or make them yourself.
