How to Build a Workbench. Build this Cheap, Sturdy Workbench for your Garage. A workbench is a must for your garage or shed. When it comes to building a workbench l needed to satisfy three criteria. The workbench was required to be tough, cheap to build (second hand or reclaimed materials are fine. It doesn't have to look pretty as pretty soon it is going to be trashed) and sturdy enough to take a beating without falling to bits.

The only thing I don’t like is the screws in the top of the ply.... he could’ve used a pocket jig to screw it from the bottom. Also, he went through the trouble of lap joining the top, then why not cut out the laps for shelves as well??
@MatzeMaulwurf
@MatzeMaulwurf 2 года назад
@@43braden yes, same as i thought. The bench is great and well done! But I wouldn’t glue the top ply on it. And screw from beneath. But that’s a thing everybody can adjust as he she it likes. We are all capable of think by ourselves.

Nice one Shane. A great, study workbench with really clear instructions. I made it pretty much like the video. I did use 30mm ply for the top which makes it a little more solid but also allowed me to screw it from below through the frame with 100mm screws (also recessed 15mm or so into the frame so the screws ran about 25mm into the ply) so that I didn't have screw heads showing / interrupting the smooth surface of the work top. Turned out really well. Thanks very much for all the ideas, Shane.

Well Uncle Knacker, I am back to revisit this Awesome Video. Becoming entirely tired of the builder who constructs benches utilizing butt joints relying on screws or bolts to bear the weight of the boards. I built my first ever workbench a few years ago at my old apartment I. Biddeford, Maine. I have once again moved, requiring me to build another workbench. The joinery utilized here is phenomenally strong. I also intend to 3 May 2018, to build and overhead bin storage area atop the workbench. Thanks so much again, for posting this video. These joints are ridiculously strong. Lee From Norway,Maine.

TIP: When using wood screws to join two pieces of wood together. Drill the pilot-hole in one piece of wood a tad wider than the diameter of the screw, so that it slides right through. Now offer up the second piece behind the first and clamp them together. The screw will pull that second piece of wood really tight ...no real need for glue. This works well with both hard and soft wood.

I built a very similar workbench 15 years ago. I topped it with one ply of 1/8" tempered hardboard. This protects the plywood and helps absorb any liquids spilled on the top. i used 1" brads to "nail it off" and that allows me to replace it periodically turning the bench into a new workbench!

Very nice and strong........ HOWEVER... You should never glue the top down to the frame. Screws are more than enough to hold that top down. If you ever need to replace that top because of damage or spills or whatever the case may be it will be much easier to remove it just by removing the screws. It would be a fiasco to remove it if it's glued down.

I used 4x4 for my legs and 2x6 for the work bench, additionally I added 5" casters for mobility. My top dimensions were 30" wide so the work bench can through a door and 48" long so that you can cut an 8 foot long board using the work bench as a cut-off for your table saw. My top was made of two 3/4" Birch plywood pieces glued together and fastened to the legs and stretchers with Kreg joinery. Of course, I calculated the height of the bench top to match up with my table saw. You could add a quick opening/closing wood vise at the narrow end of the table....

I am busy following your plan for the mere fact of its simplicity and sturdiness of the bench. HOWEVER, I am making one that will consist completely out of pallet wood. Sure bit off a lot for this build but will persist through to the end. It's day 3 now and I am still mill8ng the wood as some of it is cupped, twisted or bowed using only a thicknesser. Wish me luck and I will send the end result to you mate.

@@diyforknuckleheads Uncle Knackers turns out that building a bench with pallet wood is harder than it seemed. Due to the "brittleness" of said pallet wood my joints kept on chipping out of completely broke away from nails and screws. So I decided to purchase proper wood from my local hardware store and start over. And maybe just maybe do my own add ons to the bench as well. Thank you for your amazing informative video tutorials, with dad jokes included, for it made me once again fall in love with woodworking. A job well done sir. Have a good one

Hi Sam. When doing a large project like a workbench when it's bolted and screwed together, glue isn't necessary. You can glue however if you want to. Cheers mate and thanks for watching.

Hi StopPutin. You can use a jigsaw if you like. What ever you feel comfortable with really. A jig saw may be a fraction quicker but when you consider that all you are doing is four cuts, then the time taken using either method is hardly noticeable. Cheers mate and thanks for the comment.

Made a copy of your bench but with a few additions. I use mine for my wood chop sawand now can move it all over my garage.Used metal plates to stiffen all leg joints,plus wheels on each leg. Bolted down the saw on top, along with rollers on each side of my saw. Then made two shelves for wood and tools underneath. Chasing tools is a witch as you know. Love your videos.

I've just today completed a new bench using these guidelines and I'm really pleased with it. I took my time, there were no nasty surprises, and everything went according to plan. I made it a little longer than the 2m specified here but its so strong it takes the extra length (2.4m) without problems. Now I'm looking for another project so I can use my bench. :-) Many thanks Uncle Knackers - a great project!

Shane, mate, just wanted to say how good this video is. I used it 4 years ago to build my work bench, with the checkouts. Talk about strong joints. Since 2016 that bench has been stood on, bashed, hammered, belted, banged into walls (and cars... oops), you name it, and it's still as solid as the day it was made. Bloody good on ya cobber! I'm so glad I found your vid back in the day.

Good question Aaron with a very simple answer. Because the shelf frame is positioned inside the workbench legs, the end grain on the two short pieces is covered up by the leg. If the leg wasn't there, you would see the end grain. Check out photo number 4 at the end of the video. That will probably explain it better. Thanks for stopping by mate and for the comment. Cheers
