Having used SundayKeys, it's pretty awesome. Great video. The controller is a Korg NanoKontrol 2, and there is a nice template for it that SundayKeys sells (kinda $ IMO). Mainstage 3 is great too and is good enough for most set-ups. I find the piano sounds a bit thin compared to a Nord Stage 2 or 3, and of course dedicated piano VSTs, but sound good in a mix which is what matters in this context. Nord Stage 2 is pretty cheap used nowadays and would also provide a backup with great sounding keys/pad available. I would honestly recommend a Mac-based set-up for everyone even if you have a PC. A dedicated laptop is ideal too especially as you add more and more softsynths. The best part of this SundayKeys set-up is I don't have to carry much to church. Just my laptop, nanokontrol, and interface which fit in a backpack. Setup all your sounds at home with your personal keyboard, and just bring your backpack to church for the worship service. I have a NanoKey to do droning strings as well which is part of SundayKeys. It's kind of amazing.

Once again great vid Jake. Great resource to float around the teams to get a wider view. We ended up just keeping a host DAW connected to the mixer with a common plug in host installed. It patches into the desk via dante (sometimes usb) direct. Then everyone has a copy of the exact same setup, works on their sounds etc at home, saves the multi/presets via remote desktop to the host daw and turns up on sunday ready to go with their own settings. (Can bring their own controller setup if required without issue as its setup to their preset)

This is really good advice. MainStage at $39 is still by far the best deal you can get on the Mac. For Windows, Ableton Live Intro is a hundred bucks and gives you pianos, pads, strings, etc, but they flat out do not sound as good as MainStage. Ableton was designed for electronic music - even in the full version, to my ears the MainStage pianos sound better. But Ableton is a must-have if you're running background tracks. Ableton plus MainStage = win.

I don’t know.. We bought a used nord stage 2 for less than 1000 euros and it’s perfect. Sure a software set up can add some new sounds but I’d definitely recommend to learn to master all the possibilities of your actual hardware rig before leveling up. And honestly, let’s not forget worship is simple. It’s all about spending time in the presence of our God, for one purpose : His glory. Keep up the good work ;)

My cheap gigging rig, Casio CDP-100, great weighted keyboard available for peanuts used. Midi to USB adapter. Casio CT-X800, dirt cheap rompler synth with decent sound. iPad with camera connection kit 2 (with charge capability), USB3 hub and iMIDIPatchbay. Cheap 8 channel mixer and a decent mic. A few cables, 2 keyboard stands and a portable bench. Whole rig is less than $600 and works great. Upgrade would be a CT-X5000, Yamaha MX or Casio MZ-X300 to upgrade the sound engine (CT-X800 above) The proposed rig is about $3000 plus VST’s. For that money I’d have 3 awesome keyboards (Yamaha MX61, Casio MZ-X500 and a PX-160), new IPad and all the extras and some $$$ left over.

I would recommend having a hardware based keyboard as the controller, so it is easy enough to get that into the mix. I always layer a hardware synth/keyboard with a software-based one for this exact reason. I've never had to deal with a crash, but I know it will happen some day.

I have a 15” 2016 MacBook Pro with only 4 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports that I use for my own production and also for worship at our church, for everything from bass and guitar to click, pads, tracks, and keys. I got an Anker 7-port powered hub from Amazon that works great for me. On Sunday I’m running my audio interface, Push 2, Novation Launchkey 61, and external drive all at the same time from just my rig. No issues with power or latency. You will likely need a couple USB-C to USB adapters though.

thanks for sharing; I am a "old school" piano player but I want to keep up with new developments so this is very interesting. Just one "what if" scenario; if the computer lets you down, do you have a back-up plan?
@tylerentertains4495
@tylerentertains4495 4 года назад
Personally, I would recommend always having something with its own sound. My personal go to rig, when I need more than just a piano, is a Yamaha P115, with an M-Audio Keystation 88 on top. The Keystation runs all my Mainstage sounds, exclusively. It doesn’t have anything built in because it is just a controller. The Yamaha I run directly into my mixer, and it handles all the piano work. If my laptop fails, I get dead notes or glitches, or my controller fails on me, I can kill the volume and switch over to the piano. It won’t be the sounds, and I could always run a USB from the piano to the laptop, but I’d rather have it be independent. This way it’s a failsafe, and I can always play. Even if it limits me to piano, a string patch, e piano, and a couple organs. I don’t think I’d ever do a show without that p115.

You didn't mention that many MIDI controllers and Audio Interfaces come with software that can flesh out your rig. The Focusrite audio interfaces typically have a free code for several plugins - I got some great synth plugins with mine. Most AKAI (and other brand) keyboards and MIDI controllers come with Ableton Live Lite. One free license was Addictive Keys, and it turned out to be a great piano sound plugin.

Question: from your computer to the Focursrite, are you using a USB input to USB output cable? Or USB from your computer to 3 pin xlr on the Focursrite
@chrisw1462
@chrisw1462 5 лет назад
@@reneportal542 I'm using a USB cable (USB A to USB B that came with the Focusrite 6i6 2nd Gen). While you technically Could use a USB DAC to XLR device of some sort to send audio to the Focusrite, you would be using up one or two XLR inputs and converting the audio three times (see below) for no real reason, not to mention the cost of the USB DAC. (The Focusrite does need a driver - it gets installed with the Focusrite Control software. You'll have issues if you don't install it.) The DAC (digital to audio converter) in the Focusrite is pretty good, maxing out at 24-bit, 192 KHz. Since the USB cable is essentially lossless for audio, it should be the best choice, unless you have an odd setup that requires the USB DAC. (Powered USB Extension cables do exist, and I use one on stage now with no problems!) If you need the USB DAC, I'd try just using the Focusrite for only for Input, and use the USB DAC for your Main output. Using a USB to audio device converts your computer's digital audio to analog, then the Focusrite converts it back to digital for mixing, then into audio again for the outputs. The number of conversions plus possible conversion timing problems will introduce more noise - the only question is how much and whether it is objectionable. If you're using Windows and ASIO4ALL, you should install the Focusrite ASIO driver and choose it under ASIO4ALL, not the Focusrite audio ports directly. (ASIO4ALL isn't needed unless you have another ASIO device you want to use at the same time, like the USB DAC.) If you try to use the Focusrite audio ports directly with ASIO4ALL (it does see them without the driver), you'll have level control issues. You may have to restart your DAW the first time after choosing the Focusrite ASIO device in the ASIO4ALL settings. Ableton Live errored out when I did that, but restarting fixed it, and it didn't happen again. Ableton is very sensitive to Audio device changes in Windows, and apparently ASIO4ALL resets the audio device the first time you choose a new interface. Sorry if this is info you already knew - just trying to cover all the bases. Hope you get it all working the way you want.

Well, i use almost all of this stuff. MacbookPro (running Sound with low latency is a stress on the CPU), Laptop stand, decent Midi controller, Software and Plugins, Audio Interface. Lots of stuff to build up, many crucial parts that can be a showstopper if not working. And for the PC guys: Anyone switched on the PC just to be greeted by a 30 minutes Windows update screen? ("Don't switch off!") Bottom Line: I got a Kronos now. period.

What about the delay you will have to get really good interface like Apollo Twin or something and a mac with thunderbolt port but still not sure with the delay and stability about this setup. So lets say you start playing and Apple freezes or software crushes. That might be a big problem.
@chrisw1462
@chrisw1462 5 лет назад
Freezing or crashing should be pretty rare no matter what computer you use, as long as you Do Not Use the computer for Anything Else. I'm not being too strict here. Sure, web browsing is fine, as long as you don't have the browser open during a performance. Don't install anything on it you don't need, and maybe even un-install software that came with the computer - certainly everything you don't use. If there's a lot of, well, crap on the system, consider an OS reinstall (total wipe and reinstall if it's Windows). It's not for the faint of heart, but it could save you a figurative coronary later. If you have the money, a backup computer can save your performance. iConnectivity has a new audio interface, the PlayAudio 12, that has automatic fail over - your main computer dies, it changes instantly to the backup computer audio. Ableton Live is designed to sync in this way - once you have the setup running, the main computer can freeze mid performance and you'll be (un)lucky to even hear a glitch.
@westdccs

My recommendation as someone who has been playing keyboards in worship for almost 25 years, get a setup that you are comfortable using and learn to use it well. I politely disagree that you need any of the items you mention in this video. I have all of the things you mention within two keyboards. The rig that I use at my church is a Roland Fantom G7 and a Roland VK-8. The G7 has an arpeggiator, plenty of pads and synths, plenty of modulation controls, the ability to create a huge number of layers and performances, onboard sequencing, onboard sampling, good piano sounds, tempo syncing via midi, and is fairly easy to operate. It is the primary keyboard in our worship set. The VK-8 is used to provide gospel and rock organ sounds for some of the songs we do. Since it is based on the classic sounds of the Hammond B3, you can get a wide number of organ based sounds from it from beautiful gospel and jazz sounds all the way to 60s rock, punk, and pure distorted organ sounds. Even though these keyboards are about 8-9 years old, I'm able to pretty much create any sound that is needed for a worship song set. I have looked at a setup like you describe here, but I just can't get past the complexity. I consider myself highly technical, and I just see so many potential points of failure that the average church musician won't be able to easily troubleshoot if it goes wrong. Now, I will give you the ability to totally transform your sound is unmatched with a setup like this -- and if you are going for exact covers you'll get the closest with this type of setup. However, I also think there is a certain charm in "personalizing" a song for your church. We play a lot of music from a lot of the big names today, and the first thing we do is ask, how do we make this our own?
@DrewOnThaTrackKay
@DrewOnThaTrackKay 5 лет назад
you are right. not required unless you are recreating a song. but if you want high end sound and your church cant afford to buy these kinds of keybord then this is the best solution as it is cheap. the other point is portability. when i play for other people i bring my midi keyboad and pc because i dont want to start familiarizing myself with another keyboard (even though most keyboards are similar) imho knowing your setup well provides a great advantage as you stated but for cheap high end sounds this is the best option

My concern with using a controller with no internal sounds, is what happens if/when the computer freezes while playing? I also utilize software instruments, but I control them with a keyboard that has great internal sounds, such as my Yamaha S90XS or Nord Stage 3. I route the audio from my laptop & keyboard thru a small mixer. This way, if my laptop freezes, I just simply keep playing with the sounds from the keyboard.

I'm a pretty cool worship team member that does not own a Mac so what would be the the minimum specs I would need on the Mac? I don't want to buy something that is overkill and kill my budget.

no it cant. Look into using ableton with vsts and instrument groups/layers for a similar effect

Good video for the person looking for information on setup but you mention worship as though it's a requirement to have this setup.

Hello. I have just one question...why do you use an extra korg midi controller if the keyboard already has all those controls? Thank you!
@recordlabeldao7820

What about if your computer stop to work in a gig what you gonna do then ? Nothing because you have a midi keyboard. Then you have a really big problem

Thank you Jake! Do you think the NI S88 Keyboard Controller is suitable to use in a worship environment?
@nickelle3268
@nickelle3268 5 лет назад
Yes, NI stuff is great. It comes with some Komplete sounds, so if you've already got Ableton Live, getting the S88 would be a good idea.

Nick Elle thank you! I like the latest Novation MKIII but it’s not available in a 88-key version.

I love that keyboard, as well! It's super powerful, and with 32 channels of MIDI and CV, it could control a good sized synth studio! It may be a bit over kill for church though. Unless the keyboardist was the only band member (seriously, that keyboard can be used as a one-man-band), it's not really the best option for church.@@christiancanalita6487

@@nickelle3268I do need a keyboard for my studio and I can only afford 1. But after reading the posts below regarding hardware vs software, I'm not sure anymore.

There is no substitute for sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and knowing how to play. Personally, I'm past the stage where I feel the need to keep up with trends.

Awsome content and Cool video but Im just looking at that MacBook pro and I'm thinking Did you say under 100 dollars😶. I don't think soo. And I'm here using WINDOWS 10 $180 laptop and LMMS and that just barely passes.

No he referred to the software and nano board as approx cost of $100.

Yeah that's the problem is having a Mac is the expensive part, I'm a Windows person and I just got a laptop recently which is very powerful for a very good price. Don't let the idea of being cool is having a Mac become obsessive. If you know anything about computers or someone who does, maybe see if you can upgrade to an SSD which is fairly cheap if you don't have one already!
@truthgrace5464
@truthgrace5464 5 лет назад
Actually I recently did and boy is it fast now like fast⏩🚀. I get you though but I feel like maybe me or maybe it's true that everybody I find on RU-vid - that teach about these tech worship recording stuff- talk about a Mac and use Mac only software or just forget about Us. I recently a week ago bought a lenovo thinkpad too and performance is really good so I don't see why buy a computer a bunch of people on internet complain about and a price of money I've never had. (1000 or over. ) and no I don't need a MacBook air my friend has that. God bless you all let us not forget the real reason we sing and play.

@@truthgrace5464 wow, that really summed it up! God is most important and the tools you use are your choice. Personally windows is better for me, others choose Mac, but overall we need to do what is best for the budget and for being able to communicate God to others!

Just get a Yamaha Montage/ MoDX (if you travel) and call it a day. All the answer you need
@westdccs
@westdccs 5 лет назад
There are SO many keyboards that can do all of this! And, some don't even require the budget that the Montage/MoDX requires. Granted, if you have the budget this is worth a good look. But if you don't, check out used gear from any of these manufacturers: Roland, Yamaha, and Korg. Most of these have some pretty solid keyboards that will go a long way in a worship set. Of course, the challenge is finding a good piano sound, which only gets more challenging the older the instrument is.
