The solution to no distribution growth with any OTM covered call fund is to not use all of the income. If the average yield is 8%, spend 6% and reinvest 2%. It will act a lot more like a dividend growth ETF and recover faster during drawdowns.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Месяц назад
Yeah that’s a good way of looking at it. Not so ideal in a taxable account but that’s one way to grow your monthly income with it. I personally prefer allocating a lower % to CC ETFs and use all the income by combining them with dividend growth ETFs.

With 8% yearly dividend you do not need dividend growth, you just need to re-invest the dividend.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Месяц назад
That’s one way of looking at it. I’d rather have a smaller yield but more growth. But then it’s no longer 8% and you need more invested.

Thanks Jake. As a 73 yr old I’ve been watching all your videos for along time. Thanks for Thursdays as well. Your The Simple Path 0-5 years time horizon with JEPQ and DCA $500/month is what I’m starting this month. Have a pension and SSI with potential SSI cuts looming hoping The Simple Path will more than offset cuts. Again, appreciate all you do!👏

So about your comment relating to Jepq @40:11. for me personally I brought about 1 grand worth around when they first started it. I have over 10-20 years time horizon so when I heard your thought I stop buying them and have just hold them since. I don't really want to sell since the overall money weight return, According to M1, is at 52.72% starting from January 16, 2023. So I am curious for what you would do in this situation. I am considering holding it for the time being instead of selling to put into other etf but I wanted to see your input.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Месяц назад
Well it sounds like you have a few options. You have a long term capital gain so if you were to sell it at a gain, you would pay lower taxes due to long term cap gains. It depends on you. I just wouldn't add anything more and focus on other ETFs like SCHD/DGRO and then you could add JEPQ later.

@@DividendGrowthInvesting Yeah that is what I am doing at the moment. I have a 40% of my worth split into a pie consisting of DGRO, SCHD, VGT, and VOO. I am focusing a bit more of VGT and VOO at the moment since I want the market growth over the dividend gain.

Hey there! JEPI and PIMIX are not apples to apples. They are completely different asset classes. I think JEPI is a good addition to lower volatility to your portfolio and increase your yield. JEPQ is also a really good option.

Hey jake been following your channel for a while, currently I enjoy SCHD/FTEC/QQQM/VOO ETF...each are 25%. I wanted my majority of the portfolio to be dividend but since i live outside US, they hit me with 30% witholding tax on dividend😅😢.. so i went the growth route with little bit of dividend. Since im in my mid twenties i still have long time frame so i just stuck with the growth portfolio. Im just confused if i should change it....anyway thnx for the advice as always.

I feel like the trading below historical average chart is OK with REITS where they are really being hit by the (short term??) interest rates. But don't really think it applies to BTI which I don't really see being held back by a single reason in the same way as the REITS (I do own BTI).

I can understand to try and find a method to beat the system (I’ve done the same), but this seems convoluted and overly complicated than overloading on JEPI, JEPQ, SCHD/VYM, any cover call ETF really, and a growth ETF. The amount of effort it would take to also keep track and maintain the portfolio would be a pain. Also, a bunch of IF statements are in play here for it to work. Playing hard on the Buffet ideology “price is what you pay, value is what you get”. Just my 2 cents!
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Месяц назад
Exactly!!! I was thinking the same thing. It’s a bit more tax efficient but I would quite call this a SWAN compared to what you mentioned. But to each their own. I think if you had a lump sum to invest and wanted to retire today you could consider what he suggests in the article. I personally prefer SCHD/DGRO and VYM and JEPQ to boost my income.
@GuyIsFly2489
@GuyIsFly2489 Месяц назад
@@DividendGrowthInvesting I agree that investing is so much of a personal preference, but really the method makes me scratch my head with the why aspect. The tax efficient aspect depends on the individual's circumstance, if their income is low when they retire, all is good, if they are a high earner, completely understand using high-yield stocks compared to a cover call ETF. No method is perfect, not saying he is wrong and I could have missed something in the video, but my two biggest issues are that you have to be 100% convinced that value companies "do" revert to the mean and perform well in the next 10 years (which you already alluded to with Brexit and the war hindering BTI) and I think on the risk management side you could quickly be in situations where you are caught with your pants down unless you allocate the "Swan" to a low percentage to boost your portfolios income. There is no guarantee that the stocks will revert to the PE level and keep their high dividend for when you retire and use the income for the next 10-30 years which is my biggest red flag.

With covered call strategy ETFs, I wonder if NAV erosion over the long period could post a serious issue, especially with this type of investment. In other words, the funds could slowly arose into oblivion.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Месяц назад
Not all covered call ETFs are created equal. You want to make sure that the CC ETF has an Out of the money strategy and NOT a AT the money strategy. Also you want to look and see where the distributions are coming from. There can be destructive return of capital. A lot of covered call ETFs are just pigs with lip stick.
