I'm amazed you didn't put down sand or even a bit of old carpet under the liner! You risked it being torn from stones/sharp bits in the hole, especially having to stand in it to push it down. Luckily there looked to be no holes.
as I've discovered newts in my garden I've watched a lot of videos for ideas but this one has helped the most well done the best video ive seen on he subject
we built feature pond in garden no others around, frogs appeared from no where, now we have lots of frogs tadpoles without lifting a finger, apart from putting native plants in
Mosquitofish and goldfish eat mosquito larvae. If the pond surface is large enough, dragonflies and damselflies will lay eggs on anything floating on the water surface. They hatch into larvae called nymphs which feed on the mosquito larvae and the adults eat airborne mosquitoes. It’s a win win!

Thank's I'll add gravel and plant's didn't know. Thank's on the Hugo culcher also Going to make that first. My I suggest air stone or waterfalls or would air be bad?
It is also extremely important to build a hibernation area for the amphibians and reptiles. A simple permanent brush pile provides food such as wood ants and grubs plus winter hibernation shelter for tree frogs and such.
Brilliant video ! No annoying 'muzak' & straight to the point. I've subscribed ! A QUESTION : I have a pond in my garden, it produces lots of lovely postage sized toads each Spring. I also have a stream , it's fast flowing, so I can't put Minnows & Sticklebacks in it to attract the Kingfisher that we occasionally see. Does anyone know if Kingfishers will visit a pond of about the same size as the one in the video, if I stocked it with Minnows & Sticklebacks & sited it near the stream ?
I have a pond but have noticed away from the pond on a concrete path that a frog has taken up esidence in a shallow area of water inside a 'collapsable washing up bowl - these are sold for caravaners. It is now November and the frog is still there. It is getting very cold at night. It is alongside the house that is very sheltered with high walls so it may not get cold blasts of air but I am thinking of trying to give the pond a container or an overturned plant pot complete with soil and twigs etc somewhere to go when cold - would this work do you think or should I leave it to him to find somewhere. There is no soil nor grass where he is. Complete hard surfacing with tall (4 ft) pots on raised plant saucers. Thank you. I enjoy your films
Hello! Thank you for this helpful video. Quick question: I see that you have a dog. Is your dog well trained enough to drink the pond water, or how do you keep them from getting too curious? 🤔 trying to plan ahead since we let our dog play in the yard.
How do u make a pond like this in a colder climate when it gets cold in November and frogs will need to hibernate the tarp will prevent them from going deep enough their bodies will perish
Could you not create what I think is called a hibernaculum? There's a few video's on youtube about how to create one and from what I remember they're good for all amphibians you might find in your garden.
How do you keep the water clean,? Just a beginner gardener, but getting on a bit and want to keep it simple. I'm in Scotland and the rain & wind is horrendous. Thanks in advance ☺️
Hi there, just make sure you keep topping it up and replacing any evaporated water. Also buying one of those solar panel water pumps will help to keep the water aerobic which will help the beneficial bacteria keep the water clean! It will be naturally self cleansing anyway but this will help
My whole project revolves around relocating the frog pond next to my garden, which is going inside my new chicken run... How did the algo know!? :) I have a small 4x8x3ft pond, and there must be 50 green frogs living there...very cool entertainment and great for bugs. Pestilence? Hope not :)
holding up well, albeit I did need to repair some minor rips due to my labrador jumping in the pond but check out the updates and "how to upgrade your pond" for tips
Covering the pond to protect the tadpoles from birds and feeding them are not necessary. Deep water and dense vegetation should be sufficient to protect the tadpoles from predators, as they are better camouflaged than goldfish. Covering the pond blocks out the sunlight that the plants should receive. Feeding them is acceptable, but only in moderation or the pond will become polluted with waste. Algae and pond plants are sufficient to sustain them.
@@colton8990 i live in the south east... Mosquitos don't care about moving water, they'll lay eggs in a bucket of kerosene! ... and I'm not from the camp of letting snakes hang out in my back yard. I'm sure as hell not going to do anything to attract them. 👍🏻
Lol dude both your spawns are frog spawn. Toad spawn is literally like an led rope with the eggs right together not in individual masses like the frogspawn (what you had)
I guess an air pump or filter isn't necessary? Something killed my first set of tadpoles in the frog ponds I made this summer. If it matters, I am in North America.
@@blackbird7005 did you look at what he was showing while listening to what he was saying? What he was showing to be toad spawn while explaining the difference, was actually just frog spawn. Toad spawn is very different with it being a long continuing tube/string with the black spots (toad tadpoles) lined up straight along the tube. There are no clumps or balls of eggs as shown in this video which are frog eggs.
ah sorry my man but that wasn't toad spawn, the jelly on toad spawn is straight edged compared to frog spawn, not rounded like frog spawn, a quick google will show you this
Maybe put a small aerator or air stone that bubbles the water but doesnt suck up the tadpoles, I used it in a fish pond and just a small one kept the mosquitoes away for a few months until I took my aerator out
I do not like the way you put the pond liner in. You should have made it a little bigger with a step so you would not see the liner. The way you did it the rain will wash away the mud and you will see the liner again. The tad poles don’t mind either way. 😀
