Great video and tips. Building an author platform is so important, and I definitely agree with the advice about starting now, even if you don't yet have any published work. 😃👍💝

Thanks. Lots of good advice here. Especially about studying the algorithm. I'm sending this to our writers as an educational resource.

Great video. Will put those tips to use with my next pen name. Right now I have a pen name that publishes contemporary romance/paranormal romance. So that’s already too broad. But I want to write Urban Fantasy now, so I feel a new pen name is in order. Thanks!

In order for some people to have platforms, many more have to members of the audience. Sometimes, what I get from watching writing advice channels isn't new information. It is seeing someone else talking about facing difficulty in their writing and usually continuing. I just don't agree that everyone who aspires to be published should feel pressured into fashioning themselves an expert in all aspects of writing and acting that out in front of people on the internet. Take a look at M.Kirin's (RU-vid Channel) last video. It is preceded by five years worth of posts. If you just scroll through and then watch the last video, you can't help but wonder if "Every author must have an online, advice-giving profile." is a healthy expectation to put on creative people. If I ever do a series on RU-vid, it will just be my voice and I will focus on a few things I have considered carefully for years that I want to promote in fiction, backed by experience. Once I have conveyed the message, I will leave behind an open source area that others can join. There will not be a window into any aspect of my private life or those close to me. If you are an expert in all aspects of writing and are happy to keep talking, a large following is much deserved.

You definitely don't need to give writing advice to be a successful writer! That's certainly going to be only a minority of writers who do that, but engaging with the writing community on twitter or something like that might be a more reasonable goal for most writers.

@@Reedsy I have been interpreting this message to mean something absurd. A profile is something I will have to think carefully about. My girlfriend and I both like your voice and enjoy hearing your ideas.

This is a great video! I wanted to ask something, actually. I write my books in English, but I don't live in an English speaking country but a Spanish speaking country, so I guess it gets tricky when it comes to selling and marketing. Should I build a bilingual author platform? Or should I stick to my native language and write in Spanish instead...

I have a question about a novel I am writing (I don't know if i'm allowed to ask here but here I go). Basically it's about a group of adventurers a la dnd are invited to a party at their employers mansion along with a bunch of other parties of adventurers. When they go to their rooms for the night their employer appears before each of them in the form of a magical hologram and tells them that that will be fired. All except for the party that can make it out of the mansion alive first. All the doors and windows slam shut and the various traps around the mansion activate. The parties will constantly intersect, fighting monsters, avoiding traps and even fighting each other. I'm thinking about multiple POV and I saw your video on it, but I was wondering if this is a good concept and if multiple POVs would work.

What are you supposed to do if someone whose name is the same as what you intend your author brand name to be already has a twitter account with that name, and is some crazy bitter conspiracy theorist wingnut, and in general a weird guy? I know one thing to do is to register my author name with something like "Writer" or "Author" or "Novelist" before it, so it is a different screen name, but even if I did that, people still might search for me and mistakenly go to his profile instead of mine, or associate his profile with me, and think that I'M a crazy bitter conspiracy theorist wingnut! I don't want that to happen! The worst part is, his profile seems abandoned. Nothing in it has been posted since early 2018. But he didn't have the decency to close it down. How long do dormant twitter accounts stay active before they are deleted/purged?

Make yourself 'The John Smith, Author' or something like that. Or 'Real John Smith'. People are way more sophisticated than you seem to think and will not confuse you for another off brand John Smith. Also use your book images etc in your header art. Also, on your author website and blog, guest blogs, provide a direct link to your social media.
@rebbiejoanthony5362

Have you considered using a pen name, or even just your real name, but including your middle name whenever you refer to yourself, so people associate you with your whole name and don't even search for the other person's name?
@wangtoriojackson4315
@wangtoriojackson4315 4 года назад
@@jumpinjupiter1165 Yeah, I dunno. I may be overestimating peoples' confusion in that regard, but tbh I think there will still be a nonzero amount of cases of mistaken identity, and I would rather have it be an absolute zero amount. Also for my header art I was planning on using Jacque-Louis David's *The Death of Socrates*, as both the philosophy of Socrates and the aesthetic of Neoclassical art heavily relate to my creative process and the thematic overtones of my works. But I do however plan to have direct links to every part of my platform on every other part of my platform. I'll have to do some more thinking about this.

@@rebbiejoanthony5362 I don't want to use a pen name, and my intended author name is a rendering of my real name that is my first initial, middle name and last name, and that's the same way as this crazy guy in question renders his name on his twitter account. I can't use any other rendering of my name because they all sound plain and boring. This is the only rendering that has any amount of gravitas. To take Jumpin Jupiter's example name above of John Smith, it would be like if it was J. Alden Smith. See how that just sounds more important and impactful than John Smith? Same thing here. I really just wish that twitter would delete this guys' account due to its inactivity. Then there wouldn't be a problem.

@@wangtoriojackson4315 Oof. That's a dilemma. The only other thing I can think of is maybe you can report the other Twitter account? I don't know. I hope you figure out a solution to this.

I'd watch more of your videos, if you did something about your diction. Try taking a sip of water before speaking and clear your throat; it might help you enunciate your words better - I'm afraid that I find your 'coke under a door' voice hard to listen to.
