Fabricating an upper control arm for race vehicles is a key part of building a chassis. Watch Buzz Johns of ThorSport Racing walk through the steps of preparing to fabricate an upper control arm, also known as an A-arm - from part fitup and tightening to cleaning - in part one of this video, as he prepares to weld the control arm using a Dynasty® TIG welder from Miller.

What size and gauge steel do you usually use for suspension parts?
@MillerWelders
@MillerWelders 8 лет назад
+Lenny M Thanks for the question. You'll find that the type of racing typically dictates the material thickness. For example, a drag car will use .065" 4130 material for upper control arms but an off-road truck may use .095" or thicker. Most upper control arms on stock cars use the .083" to .095" thickness in mild steel and as light as .065" in Chrome-Moly. Also, your upper and lower suspension would be different. The lower control arms are typically thicker with most stock car styles using .120" thick material. Hope this helps.

So the bushing is also steel? Steel to steel contact?
@MillerWelders
@MillerWelders 4 года назад
Hello Yuta. Thank you for reaching out. Yes, steel to steel contact with a grease fitting. The cross shaft is a different hardness than the bushing to prevent seizing. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Can you shed a little light on a question.. Another youtuber made the comment he stick welds anything requiring real strength. It's obvious an A-arm is such an environment. TIG is strong enough?? Im just a newbie so bear with me. Thank oou!

Jeff DeLuca In this video, ThorSport Racing used the Dynasty 350. This TIG welder works in aviation, fabrication, pipe fabrication and ship/boat applications, making it strong enough for this project. One can also use the Dynasty 350 for TIG (GTAW), Pulsed TIG (GTAW-P), Stick (SMAW) and Air Carbon Arc (CAC-A) processes. If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Too much time to wrench the part in the fixture. My job you have to be faster at that part.
