How to Build Brick Tree Rings - DIY

Man felt like someone was explaining brick work to me in a nightclub over a few drinks on the dance floor with all that that loud music

This can all be done in a weekend guys. All you need is a trigonometry and graphic design degree and you're all set

Being a professional landscaper I never recommended edges like this. The tree will continue to grow and the roots will expand and slowly put pressure on the bricks until they break. All you need is a three inch deep edge which you can re trench every couple of years as the tree continues to grow larger.

It looks really nice! I might try something similar myself but in my climate I'm thinking that the winters will damage the concrete base and/or mortar joints. Maybe I'll just end up dry-stacking a couple of brick layers on a sand base.

Looks nice but you still have to use a trimmer. It does appear to be a circumference that fits the tree now, but what about when it's grown? Is the tree centered or is it just the camera that makes it look off center??

how do you cut the grass around the ring? i would prefer a solution where the tree ring will be on the same level with the ground (Digged in)

beautiful circles, nicely installed. hope you can pull back some of the soil/mulch at the tree's base -- to expose the' 'flare' (they look a little deep -- I learned the hard way, that'll kill a tree in less than a decade).

So how many degrees did you taper the bricks down on each side from 90*.......looks like about 3 degrees? What was your inside diameter?

CAD is such a cool program. It's wild to watch people apply it to their work so easily across the spectrum.

great vid (minus the annoyin music), very informative and use of time. however, you didn't add a sand base to the concrete, how do you know its not leanin or level? I am sure you can make up the diff. with the top brick for eveness, but had2ask, thanks!

DO NOT use concrete... it will not last. The roots will crack it in a couple years. Build with bricks, much easier and you can remove e-adjust.

I enjoy DYI projects but it seems to me that maintaining a trench around the tree is much easier. Also, this project is way above my “pay grade”.

The video and the explanation is great! Some of the viewers like me very new to this kind of work. So I'm not familiar with the tool names or the necessary equipment names. If you add the link to get the instructions then that would be great for the people who need additional help. This is my small suggestion. Really I liked your video and it inspires me to do this project at my home.

My trees are very old and very thick and the yard is small in comparison. I wonder if a tree ring would just throw off the curb appeal.

great job on the masonry. should look great for years - but, not sure about the tree... if the root flare is covered (soil or mulch), the tree WILL die before this time. look for die-back at the top - once that's begun, the tree’s most likely a goner.

looks absolutely awesome! Here's my thoughts though... If it was me I would make the whole thing at ground level as to mow easily. As it is now you have to use a trimmer every time and it's a pain when doing cross or diagonal lawn cuts with these above ground tree rings.

Must admit although I appreciate the effort & intention of this video, I agree with a lot of the comments below: the music track was a distraction & I had to lower it, the CAD drawing & mathematical equations were a first and unnecessary, and pouring brick around a growing tree really is not a good idea for the obvious reasons stated by other commentors. Gardening & landscaping are organic & ever changing & you need to leve room to grow & change areas in your garden. I don't wanna have to break down brick if I want to expand or change that area.

Well, if you don't happen to have a cad program, couldn't you just lay a brick down on the ring and use a piece of string to mark the cuts from the outside corners? I tend to agree with a lot of comments on here, that while this looks great now, the tree roots will eventually push it up and crack it all up. But you should get 5 years before that happens at least. The manufactured stone blocks at the home centers are getting better and better. But they tend to be a little small on the diameter when set together. Thanks for the video.

Yea dude, ya went to far with the CAD program. A real mason doesn't need all that for a simple tree ring of brick.

Why didn’t you just mark the concrete when wet with a scraper to have brick patten? Double job ?

Relax people. Just measure two circles. The computer stuff is more a precision job requirement for a professional but you and I could easily do this without the computer part.

Please, please, don’t bury the tree root collar (where the tree trunk naturally meets the ground) like this. It causes rot and mis formed roots. It is a VERY common problem, and will cause tree death or even failure (falls over) in future.

The roots will move with time, crack the concrete and the bricks will then lift and move around. Apart from that, splendid....

PLEASE lose the horrid music. Now… cad and pi aside… (way too complicated for me.) And I have to say I'm no expert… trying to learn how to best do this myself. BUT what I can say about trees, this isn't good for them. Ever see city trees planted in holes in the sidewalk? Ever see an old one? They simply can't live long. Next…. if you bury the trunk above where it's natural dirt line is, you WILL kill it. Last… as the tree grows, (hopefully) and your ring may need to be expanded, what do you propose? Getting a jack hammer to rip out the cement? Also I'm not sure if the chemicals in the cement are all that good for growing trees. (Maybe someone knows more about that.) I think I'll stick to a much simpler method. Dig out a ring of grass, level the ground, lay some sand, SET pavers or bricks onto that, fill the ring with dirt, THEN plant the tree. And only do this ground level or one row of stone higher, no more or the roots will girdle, or grown around in circles until the tree dies. (Just watched another video where he want about 4 levels up. NO way those trees will last long.) Your tree is established already so your problem here will be the covering the trunk issue.

is it me or does that brick ring look off centered?

The issue here is the author, neglected to research and present how this same project could be done without a computer or sophisticated software, inorder to calculate how to cut the bricks properly. Impossibly sophisticated cathedrals were built over 600 hundred years ago, and palaces, temples and other works even much older than that, were fashioned and built with no CAD Program or computer. This video was inspiring, yet just as much, it was a source of discouragement. Show the relatively simply math, that I'm sure can solve this geometry problem.

These brick rings are never a good idea. Almost always the roots will ruin them over time.

When I bought my last house, the first thing I did was to remove the tree (mulch) rings from the previous owner. My yard now looks bigger and more natural without those hokey looking tree rings. Installing tree rings is like putting a sign in your front yard that says: "My name is Jim. I'm too lazy to trim around my trees so I put in these dumb looking tree rings so I can just cut around them with my mower".
