I would love to get all the people who say or think: "You can't get a job because you're too old & there's all this age-ism in capitalism, in industry" together with all the motivational speakers who proclaim: "just do it, don't think about what others think" together & force them to come to a universal agreement on whether age-ism is scientifically objectively provably real or not.

Agreed, value yourself enough to know you choose to leave a place like that and can 100% find a place where you are treated the way you treat yourself and others. No one who values themselves stays in a place like that.

@@jessicas3070 You are right. I had a talking to today by my boss because I am apparently asking the wrong person for help. Excuse me for going to the only nice person in the group that is willing to train me without a hidden agenda. It's their problem if their don't understand other human being. I ask them any ways. I need to finish my job. So I ask them many things and if they tell me figure it out on your own. I don't move until they tell me. Because sometimes the questions are really easy to answer and they can tell you easily and save your time.

You have a thought in your brain that creates the feeling of stupid, like "I should have known that" For example, Then you feel stupid when you think and believe that. Anyone who thinks that would feel stupid too, not just you. You are not stupid you are just a human having a thought and you chose to accept it was true which created the feeling of stupid. It's optional to think what you want. Choose wisely ! Choose to focus on all the reasons you are 100% capable, which is a long list as well! Glad You found the video helpful!

Hi get the same responses from trainers/Managers too. I have started snipping/ screenshooting applications we use to complete tasks while being trained. I tell trainers before we begin that I will be capturing our training to not miss a detail. I’ll downplay my initiative with flattery saying I want to make sure I’m not missing all of their expertise nor misusing their time. I find this buys me time to take the notes I need enough where I can fill in the gaps and reduce my dependency on them. I also keep a list of tasks I was trained on with dates and names so if I am told I was trained on something, I can verify. I’ve noticed some of the trainers can be unintentionally forgetful so this helps me as well as them to make sure we are on track with what I need to know.

I still struggle with this every day at my job and in life in general. I'm afraid of asking to explain things again because of social anxiety and looking stupid. Also i'm a visual learner so if i can't imagine or visualise something it can be hard for me to wrap my head around. Everything just has to happen so fast and information gets exchanged so fast and you're just kinda expected to be able to pick up on it right away. I just don't function that way. When i get any piece of information my brain needs time to go trough that very thoroughly. And i can't just write down or record everything all the time. In life you have to be able to think and respond fast and be quik on your feet. But i'm the total oposite. That's why i'm better at writting i think because i can write it over and over again until i have perfected what i wanted to articulate... It's just very exhausting to have to go trough life like that tbh. I feel like a lot of people think that i'm dumb a lot of times And then i'm agh if only i could explain how my brain works but then i'm like Oh wel they don't care and they can't relate , and it 'd probbly be even weirder if you all of a sudden start ranting about stuff like that to justify your lack capability so then i just don't and let them think i'm stupid anyway :)

Great video. I don't and won't call myself dumb but I do get frustrated with trainers who are good at their job but hopeless at training. I always take notes which absolutely help me. No good trainer will think it's a stupid way to learn. I have learnt when I've trained people that everyone is different and everyone is only as good as hiw they have been trained. So everyone reading this, I believe you can do anything when you put your mind at rest and just know you are amazing 👏
@Forthright131
@Forthright131 Год назад
Exactly. Some trainers have the knowledge but don’t know how to universalize their communication or explain things in various ways. We as learners are only as good as our ability to ask questions and take ownership for our learning. We must remember where there is will, there is a way even if it’s not the same way of the teacher. Always find a way.

At times people tell me that I am going too slow and that they have understood it. 😁 But I like to make sure everyone understands what is the task and they are not at a place where they have to go to other people to ask about the same stuff I explained to them 😂🤣. Most smart people are upfront that they didn't understand when they don't and ask a lot of questions and ask to repeat multiple times.

Keep reminding yourself that you are capable. This way you will feel empowered to ask the questions you need to complete your tasks reducing the negative sentiments about yourself. Your not alone in those feelings. Feeling capable and productive is empowering and fueling. When we experience the opposite, we can become self doubting. What results from self doubting thoughts is the erosion of your self confidence and esteem. You need self confidence and esteem to do the job period. You are capable and confident. The company would have not hired you if they didn’t believe this too.

This video is really relieving me of some of the anxious thoughts I’ve been getting after starting a new job. I always feel dumb for asking my coworker questions because the thought of being irritating or perceived as incompetent is scary to me. But in the end, you’re right. I am responsible for my learning and it is up to me to grasp the information I’m given to do my job effectively even if it means asking multiple questions to master a task. Thank you so much for making this video

Thank you very much for creating this video! I have experienced feeling stupid when not understanding some information the first time, especially when someone is speaking very fast. I have learned to not let other people's opinions define me and it is okay to ask as many questions as possible until I fully understand what I need to understand. I find that many people who act irritated when they have to explain things again to people, are poor communicators. Instead of working on improving their communication skills, they find it easier to degrade the person on the receiving end. You are also correct when you said that people have strengths and weaknesses and because a person may make a mistake, does not mean that should be labeled as stupid. There is a huge difference between being stupid and being ignorant. If someone makes an innocent mistake, they are simply ignorant and they lack knowledge in a particular area. Everyone to a certain extent is ignorant when comes to certain things. Ignorance does not equal stupidity. If someone makes an innocent mistake or says something wrong, they are ignorant in that subject area, which is okay because have the opportunity to learn from their mistake. Once that person learns from their mistake and they continue to do the same stuff that the now know is wrong, then their behavior becomes stupid. Either way, we are all human and we all make mistakes. What defines us is not our mistakes, but how you grow from our mistakes.

So very well said and all these things stated in your comment, are what I had to tell myself and basically retrain my brain to know and believe in order to not be a nervous freaking wreck at work day in and day out. It was debilitating, the anxiety and stress I'd put myself through, in hindsight, was and is absolutely ridiculous. So unnecessary and probably took years off my life because of it LOL (kidding...sort of) I heard once, yeas ago and it struck a cord..."A closed mouth doesn't get fed".. if you don't open your mouth and ask the necessary questions...how the heck will you know how to do certain aspects of your job or how to complete an assignment? You CAN'T and you WON'T...Not without asking the questions you need to ask... and those are different for everyone. If someone is getting annoyed with the amount of questions you're asking...That's THEIR problem... NOT YOURS but I also know it's hard not to take it personally. I've learned to pity and feel bad, if you will, for those folks, because life doesn't change or adhere to different ways because it suits a certain person... So if they're so annoyed at being asked questions pertaining to the exact subject they're speaking on, then they're in for some real hurdles and obstacles in life. Nobody is so out of this world amazing at explaining anything or picking something up the very first time they see it done or have it explained to them... That the person they're talking to won't have at least a few questions...thats incredibly unrealistic and extremely narcissistic (if they do) yes I understand there's a RARE Few that pick something up along in life after they've watched it domonstrated ONCE or had it briefly explained to them...again, that's unrealistic and even then they'll go over it in their heads or even practice, if they can. I used to beat myself up so bad and I'd obsess sometimes for weeks, even months when I had someone get snappy when I'd ask (in their opinion) too many questions...I'm an intelligent individual and I know that... I know how to do so many things pertaining to anything and everything you can imagine, because I've asked questions, sometimes TONS and sometimes not quite a ton BUT I'll ask as many as is necessary for me to understand what I need to know, if that's what it takes... I did eventually start taking notes and I'll say I'm a HUGE note taker and take notes on everything, anything I need throughout the day... Recording on my phone is my go to now, but I've never outgrown the need to ask questions when learning something new and neither will anyone else. "A closed mouth never gets fed"

Summarized notes: 1. When you feel bad for not understanding the first time, I want you to flip it around, and put it back on that other person. Let go of the negative feeling. Embrace a sense of entitlement: you are entitled to questions until you are blue in the face. Challenge them. It doesn't matter who or how good they think they are. They could be an excellent soldier, but a terrible parent and teacher. That's not your fault. This happens most of the time actually. Engineers good at talking to systems, not people. Again, that's not your fault. You must expect this outcome. Be prepared for it. It requires patience from both sides. Everyone is feeling Imposter Syndrome. The more transparent you can be, the more effortlessly we can solve the problem. Nobody is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone. If you aren't making mistakes, you're not trying. But not everyone REPEATS their mistakes. Mistakes serve as learning opportunities. I could lecture you for hours, but at the end of the day, we learn 100x more from our mistakes. Nobody learns to ride the bicycle the first time. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing. Since they're asking you to help them, it's in their best interest to invest the time required so that you CAN be successful. But if you allow them to leave without your understanding, NOW it becomes your fault. NOW you're fated; it's a self-fulling prophecy--you WILL look dumb when you show up to deliver empty-handed, and if you don't try anything new to change your approach, you'll keep on delivering a bad experience consistently, NOW your team WILL think of you as unworthy--BUT ONLY BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT IT FIRST. 2. Use technology to augment your learning speed. For example, I love to record everything. You could use a tape recorder, or ask them to write it down, or present it to you in a different format. 3. Use flattery. "I can see you understand this really well, but as a new person I am struggling. Can you rephrase slowly?"

I constantly feel dumb as I’m always pushed into new roles that get me more visible and pressurised. I seem to be good at hiding it as I keep getting more work. Somehow despite not knowing exactly what I’m doing or how to do the work I can get through the day. This is not easy and I’m anxious most of the time. It seems to work enough though and I tend to have enough resilience to batter through the almost constant issues that crop up. I’ve stopped trying to understand why. I do spent most of my time wondering why I’ve not been found out. At least one a day I’ll have an issue escalated to me and I’ll think “what on earth does that even mean”. I try to focus on what’s causing the problem rather than the very technical details. It’s helped me to realise that almost all problems are caused by miscommunication so i tend to focus on getting the right people to talk to each other.

There has been so much anxiety that I've developed through the working experience that I've felt "dumb" or felt like I was "problem-driven" on the number of questions I've asked my employers or have felt they were frustrated with me because I needed more information so that I may perform my work.
