This is the stuff we need to hear as dancers. Love the analogy of leading and driving in an unfamiliar city. While trying to have a conversation with her in the passenger seat.

Please make more content like this. It’s much appreciated. Yesterday I felt that my dance partner didn‘t want to dance with me at the party of our dance school, because there were more experienced dancers than a beginner like me. A feeling like that takes all your confidence. I wasn‘t able to ask another lady that night!

After almost quitting due to too many pattern-based instructors your approach is really refreshing, really appreciate it!

Hi Daniel, really appreciate your extreme openness on own (past) weaknesses and struggles. It’s beautiful to see a fantastic dancer do that. It motivates me because it makes me feel more normal:-) thanks for this honesty, which is rare and missing generally. CU Thomas

I suffered for years before I began to improve. I can completely relate to this. To be honest I struggle to connect with the women especially if the followers physical connection through her arms is not well developed. I adapt but there is no way to make your partner connect if they don't want to or don't know how to. Too much eye contact feels weird. I always enjoy the dance but don't always enjoy the connection. Great video. Please make more like this.

8:27 Been there myself. Did not dance for 3 socials and on the third one my instructor put a salsa track and yelled at me to get on the floor. Sometimes you just need a push

This video was the really helpful, thank you. I dance salsa for approximately 2 years now (once/twice a week) and I'm struggling with the "connection" part too... I'm just so focused stepping on 1 and 5, and also leading correctly, that i can barely do anything else beside that. The car analogy is really perfect and thanks to you I feel a little bit better and more confident that I'm going to achieve what I'm looking for in dancing. 😊(also, wine really helps until a point..😁)

NIce video. Main take away for me was start with a smile. Everything else flows from that.

4 years of dancing and those feelings still come. The couple of drinks does help, but take one too much and it could go the other way.

I was exspecting advices for the physical connection to the partner (push as a follower with your arms when the leader pushes - not the opposite, and pull when he pulls, etc.), but of course the psychological connection smiling, caring etc. is also important

Car analogy is great. I was really in my head for a long time too, and then you're just going through the motions doing one figure after another. Starts to feel more like you're making a dog do tricks at that point haha. What really made a change was covid actually. Was forced to not dance for a while and then when we could dance again I had forgotten most of the complicated stuff. Turned out to be a blessing because dancing "at a lower level" I noticed my mind was actually free to listen to the music and try to anticipate what was coming. Started working on my shines and basic steps and that makes everything pop and way more playful. So I think good advice would be to after you get to your advanced classes to drop all the complicated stuff for a while and focus on those basic steps and get a real feel for the music.

Great video! You touched on the exact experiences I have after 1 year of dancing. It is definitely a progression up and regression down just how you described. It is not a straight line upward. This journey is about personal discovery, overcoming physical and mental barriers, dealing with setbacks, and developing resilience. Becoming a great dancer includes many factors that take time and patience to achieve.

Merci beaucoup, very generous of you. Yes, it's true that the journey is difficult. Your kind words are reassuring. I find it difficult to find the right play list that is modern and the right rythm. Any advice? Thank you!

Daniel is a great video. But what can you do if the girl doesn't want to make a connection at all? I'm fresh from partying last night and had a fantastic time on the dance floor. Yesterday I met a girl who didn't want to make contact at all. I'm always cheerful and smiling and I always try to make my dancing partner comfortable, but this girl didn't even try to look in my direction while dancing with me and halfway through the song I wanted to stop and just leave. And I know for sure I won't dance with her again because it was torture. Regards, Jarek

Well you kinda answered your own question there at the end. 😉 Assuming you're a decent dancer, then she probably just didn't like you very much. One level worse than that (or not, lol) would be her simply declining to dance with you at all. 😖 I recently returned to the salsa scene after a 10 year break; almost starting from scratch. What I've noticed now, which has been a bit of jolt, is that girls in their 20's will sometimes actually turn down my invitation to dance. I can't remember that happening before over many years of dancing. But if they know me already, from doing classes etc, then it's usually fine. This however is not a problem for me with women in their 30's and up. So I've just had to recalibrate a bit, and accept that even though I've aged pretty well and dress fairly smartly etc, I am still 55yo and things might've changed a little. 🤷‍♂️ One other thing occurred to me after a dance social last night. I think it's the mid girls (in attractiveness) who are most likely to refuse. Because they are very concerned with their perceived 'status' in the scene and dancing with an older guy might compromise that. Whereas an unattractive girl is happy to be asked, and a hot girl, funnily enough, may accept - because she knows she's hot - and it doesn't matter who she dances with, that's not gonna change. People would just think she's being nice and maybe somewhat charitable. However, this does not mean she likes you or wants to connect with you.
