I just returned from the DR where I spent a lot of time in a club called Merengue Bar which featured a band that played Merengue music and a little Bachata. I danced and spent time watching the locals dance. I saw few combination moves and mostly simple turns but what I saw the most was connection, smiles, eye contact and having fun. I was dancing and realized I was too concern with dancing perfectly instead of having fun. I relaxed and smiled and connected and yes had fun. Great advice that you share and that I got to experience first hand.

It is mind blowing your salsa talk. I started dancing and learning three months ago only, but been always a fan. Listening to your salsa talk is very enlightening. Please keep giving your tips. In fact i am studying them as i will be going to my first festival in Dubai in a few weeks. Thank you for being an inspiration. ♥️

Hi Morry. Great video! I've been dancing since 1988 after I saw Dirty Dancing. In my opinion, the most important part of dancing with good connection or smoothly is dependent on resonance. Some leaders get this naturally or it builds on it's own without studying it. But if that isn't the case, then it's a worthwhile skill to develop. No matter what the hold is that you have on yourself, you're partner is going to feel it and react to it. It's human nature and has nothing to do specifically with salsa. It just exists with salsa as it exists every where else. If a guy can control his internal tension (his torso, shoulders, legs, feet, arms, hands....etc), the communication between the partners will go much better. Cheers!

Follows-help your lead stay safe. A little pressure in your fingertips helps I’ve found as well as indicating with my eyes behind them.

Thank you very much for the advice... it's like a "How to be a gentleman on the dance floor"... if you ever visit Puerto Rico go to La Factoría and La Placita, in Santurce. You'll have a great time👍

Excellent video and wholeheartedly vouch for the advice: I personally only do a handful of combinations but "listen to" the music and connect what I'm doing with the rhythm and what my partner wants to/can do. What I've noticed is that even with simple moves, when you sync everything up it never gets old or boring, and you end up doing some new things without even trying.

I do like to dance Mambo On2, a bit of Cuban when a Cuban song is played and Bachata Moderna and Dominican.

Thanks again! Great advice. Bad news though that this video is just one more piece of evidence how inherently broken our idea of dancing is. I hope that teachers all over the world start to realize that if they did their job right, then all the good stuff (really every single point) you say here would be not necessary to mention at all. I hope that we realize _why_ ladies prefer connection over combinations - because doing combinations without connection is just... crap - people who "prefer combinations over connection" don't even understand that they don't understand nothing. You may not even dare to call that partner dancing at all, so sorry. There is no partner dance without connection. It all comes down to a deep misunderstanding about what leading and following is about. It's interesting that in some of your words these misunderstandings shine through, as if you would support them. But ok, probably this approach is needed, let's continue the good work!

Hi, I totally agree. And yes I can defend those who get lost in combinations because I remember I used to do the same. Looking for connection without knowing how to get it or how to create it. Once you get it, only then you know what you have missed.

@@salsaventura Yes, I sure have been there. Now I also know that this is not necessarily one of the things everyone has to get through.

@@salsaventura I’m trying to figure out a way to communicate this to leads instead of getting blamed but alas. They think I want to lead by taking this perspective-hence why I love beginner leads who smile and are just naturally relaxed.
