Hi everyone! I had a little extra time, and I haven't ever built jump standards with treated wood, so I thought I would show you how easy it was to make some horse jump standards.
It took me about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to build 2 pair of standards. The nice thing about using treated wood is I didn't have to paint everything! That tool a lot of time off the total build time of creating these standards.
You don't need a lot to make theses, I bought 2 8 ft long 4 x 4's, and 3 2 x 4's all treated lumber.
The total cost to make these was $68.00, not too bad right?!?!?!

i use these at my barn and they look great! i put flowers and fake bushes under mine for cute hunter courses and people always ask me where i got them. 10/10 recommend because they look great and last and are cheap. i made mine 4ft high

What are you using as jump cups and pins? Do you buy them from an equestrian supply-type store?

Can you make a video of how to find good quality tack on a budget?

Thank you! I think that is a great idea for a video! I LOVE finding deals, especially on tack because it can be so expensive!

The holes have to be centered or jump cups and pins won’t fit snug

I've always used treated lumber, I can't find untreated 4x4s and I'm picky about having the same wood types together, so I use treated 2x4s for the feet too. P.s. your facebook link didn't work

This was the first time I used treated lumber for building jumps. They are definitely heavier, hopefully they will last a long time. I was able to find both 4 x 4 and 2 x 4 treated lumber at Home Depot. The wood was more expensive, but with not having to add primer and paint, and the time saving factor, they are more economical! Thanks for the heads up on the Facebook link, I think I fixed it! 😃

You're welcome! Yeah Lowe's is a bit cheaper for me. But I meant I can't find UN-treated wood. Where do you get UNtreated 4x4s? I've only found one place in my new location (FL), and it's an hour away and the 4x4's are like 1.6x the price of treated ones. O_o

I guess I'm lucky, Home Depot has a HUGE selection of un-treated 4 x 4 wood. They have all different sizes, from 8 ft long and up. This is how we make our 10 ft rails too, using un-treated 4 x4's. I believe they say Douglas fir #2 on them. And they are less expensive than the treated wood. The last time I was buying wood, the 10 ft long 4x4's were $12.56 each. I actually have thought of a way to make a wing jump standard using 2 x 4's, and I am going to test it out this weekend, so you know what that means, a new video on how to make wing standards with 2 x 4's, and maybe I will try to make a pair of schoolers this way too!

If I were to paint these, what kind of paint would you recommend?
@BudgetEquestrian
@BudgetEquestrian 7 лет назад
If I were to paint these standards, I would start with a primer Kilz 2 is the best I have found. And then you could paint it with any type of paint you want, as long as it is exterior type paint. I really like oil based paints for horse jumping equipment because it lasts a long time, and it doesn't get scuffed up as easily. 🙂🙂🙂

Does it have to be treated wood for the standards?
@BudgetEquestrian
@BudgetEquestrian 7 лет назад
No, you don't have to use treated wood. It was just what I had. I typically will use landscaping timbers because they are a lot cheaper, around $4.00.
