In this video I talk about how I make the different templates and jigs I use to build my fly fishing landing nets. This is brief overview of my process, I could make an hour long video of myself rambling on an on about my process but I think that would bore most people. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment below and if you like this video please like and subscribe. Thank you.

Nice James. One of the most informative videos I’ve come across.

Thank you, even after it’s done and published I still think I missed some stuff but, that’s just the way it goes.

Do you sell the forms/jigs? Is there any place to get them if you do not? Very good video,very informative! I just would like a template/form/jig as a place to start…

Can’t say I’ve ever sold a jig. I would suggest a good place to start is just making a actual size drawing on a larger piece of paper or cardboard and really fine tune it before you transfer it to wood and starting cutting. Sometimes I look at the drawing for quite a while before committing it to wood.

James! Beautiful work and thanks for the detailed explanations. I've found that when building the clamping cauls the appropriate size to accommodate the thickness of the hoop I've used a hole saw cut out with the correct radius to use as a guide while tracing around the hoop. Also, what slot router bit are you using? Thanks for the help!

I use a 1/8 by 1/8” slot cutting bit I’ve found thru mcls tools. I called them up and told them what needed and they were very helpful, and the price is extremely reasonable.

I am thinking of making my own Lansing net. I dont have much experience working with wood what will probably be evident by my question. Can i not just cut a frame from a wood plank instead of building the arch with laminate?

I wouldn’t suggest it. The grain of the wood going in two or more directions over such a narrow piece wouldn’t be very strong at all. The multiple piece of wood with the grain going in one direction is what gives it its strength

do you purchase the net bag first???
@jamesfeight5818

As far as deciding the size of my net, I do ensure that I can purchase a bag(net) that will fit it. Janns nets have a good selection if your looking. Typically I use Ed Cummings brand

@@jamesfeight5818 thank you for the reply! I appreciate it. That’s exactly what I was thinking. Here’s my “other “ question. Is the net circumference that I’m measuring or the front to back- side to side measurements? I’ve also seen several with only the bottom of the net measurements and the deep”ness” of the net measurements. This is my final confusion.

I believe it’s a cross pattern measurement. Length to width. So like 16x12 or something like that. I would go bigger if your unsure at least for the first net. People tend to like a deeper bag
