How To Build Muscle After 50 - With Lee Labrada == FREE 12 WEEK PHYSIQUE TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM :www.labrada.com...
Ask Lee Q & A #1) www.labrada.com...
ALL Labrada supplements here: www.labrada.com...
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding Fitness or Nutrition and I will be happy to try and answer them. Here's where you can ask.. www.labrada.com...
Hi I'm Lee Labrada, your lean body coach and welcome to this weeks ask Lee.
This week's ASK LEE question comes from Bob Hager of Jacksonville.
QUESTION: Bob writes, Lee, "I'm a 65 year old male. I'm fairly active, and I'm thinking about joining a gym. Can I start training at this age and will I be able to build my muscles?"
ANSWER: Bob, thank you for writing in, and the answer to your question is a re-sounding "yes!"
Weight training can help you improve virtually at any age. Now that being said, let's see what you can expect from a good weight training program.
Weight training increases muscle volume and density, which is a biomarker of aging. Typically as we get older, we experience muscle loss, and this is especially true of people who are sedentary. As we age, we also experience loss of bone density.
Weight training has been shown to improve bone density in individuals also.
Last but not least, because muscle tissue is a metabolically intensive tissue, it will help you to lower your body fat levels, making you leaner and healthier.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you embark on a weight training program. First and foremost, visit with your doctor to make sure that you don't have any pre-existing conditions that would preclude you from engaging in a strenuous exercise program.
Once you get the greenlight, then it's time to go to the gym. Remember to ease into your weight training program, allowing your body to slowly adapt to the increase loads and activity. Make sure that you learn the proper form for lifting, and that you live safely to avoid injuries. Your muscles are less elastic at your age, so you have to take care to warm up properly and stretch. You can find an excellent training program in my book the lean body promise, which you will find on my website, Labrada.com. You can also find free how- to exercise and nutrition videos on my website that can help you get started.
Your nutrition program is going to be really important, and determining how much muscle you're able to gain. You want to eat a balanced diet that is high in lean proteins such as chicken, fish, egg whites, low-fat cottage cheese, and protein shakes; AND includes moderate amount of natural complex carbohydrates such a sweet potatoes, whole-grain rice, oatmeal, and beans. Add fruits and vegetables, and you are off to the races. A diet of this type naturally takes a little getting used to, especially if you eat like most Americans to do, which is to say high in sugar and fat. But I can't emphasize enough the importance of nutrition in your program.
Along with your nutrition program you may find certain supplements and vitamins helpful. I always recommend a good high protein shake such as the Lean Body ready to drink shake, as it gives you lots of protein with zero sugar.
You may also want to supplement with a good multivitamin, a tablespoon of fish oil each day, and some added creatine. Creatine is a naturally occurring substance that your body makes, and can help increase your strength and endurance naturally. Creatine studies done in the elderly show benefits from daily creating use. A good BCAA or in other words, a branched-chain amino acid supplement is a good addition right after your workout.
One more thing you should know... as we get older, testosterone levels decline. Because testosterone is a significant factor in the ability to build muscle, you may want to have your testosterone levels checked by your doctor, and if they are low, you may want to do some research into whether testosterone replacement therapy is right for you.
Just remember that there is no substitute for doing the work you do in the gym, and following a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition and rest. I want to congratulate you on starting your program, and embarking on your lifelong journey towards better health and a leaner body.
Bob, I hope that this helps point you in the right direction.

I've been active since I was a peewee. Never stop! Started with sports at a young age and continued throughout high school but it didn't stop there......went high speed, low drag when I enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduating from high school maintaining an intense regiment throughout my 24 years in the Marines. Going on 53 next year and I still work out nearly everyday! Don't quit!

What a breath of fresh air ! I'm a little worn on 20 or 30 somethings giving advise for guys twice their age, when they have no clue to what it's like to live in a half century old body. Including those with degrees ! I'm 52 and have been aggressively perusing the bodybuilding lifestyle for the past 5 yrs. (had to wait 30 yrs for a dbl hip transplant first) your advise is spot on ! Not to mention steeped in reality/experience. (positive and encouraging) It would be awesome, as well as an honor, to hit the iron with you someday !

Mahalo for all your insight and knowledge...I just turned 50 this year and want give myself the best chance of reaching 60...or 70+...I am a cancer survivor (10 years out), have low testosterone and suffer from gynecomastia. I re-engaged in weight training two years ago, but hurt my shoulder when I missed the rack while doing barbel presses. I am about 90% recovered and have begun lifting light weights and doing lots of reps...I want this! What motivates me this time around is that my 13 year old son is my partner...he is learning the basic movements/form and not worrying about the weight. We both are having fun exercising, enjoying the outdoors and eating better than we've ever have;) Keep up the great work Lee...you look great! You inspire men like me to make the most of what we've got! Take care and Aloha;)

Wishing you all the best, enjoy training with your son. High reps and constant tension is what strength and health is all about. The muscle has no idea how much weight we're lifting, it's only time and tension that it needs to be stimulated properly. Have a great one!

Hi Lee. I am seventy years old and have been lifting since I was fifteen years old. The only lay off I have had were for shoulder surgeries and a wrist surgery due to osteoarthritis. I lifted while recovering from these with the side of my body that had not experienced the surgery. I remember you from all the muscle mags I read as a younger fellow. You look great and are a credit to the game. My best lifts came at 39 yrs. old with a raw BP of 537, a squat of 605 and a deadlift of 620 at a bodyweight of 237. I never lifted in a competition except while in undergrad school but enjoyed lifting with my students and put on contests at school. I taught Physics for 37 years and coached the throws in track and field. Several of my students entered contests in power lifting and a few in Olympic lifting as a result of the love for the sport while training for track and field. Lifting contributed to the success they achieved in track and field and state records in Pa. One still exists in Pa, the discus, and was set in 1991 by a student, Brian Milne, who lost a complete year, his junior year, to cancer but came back his senior year to set state records in the shot and discus. The discus throw was over 200 ft. and the shot was a bit over 62 ft. He also won nationals that year in the discus and went on to a career in pro football after playing football at Penn State and being a star T&F athlete.Weight training had a very positive effect in his career Thank you for all you do to promote the sport of drug free bodybuilding and healthy living. Best wishes for success in your business endeavors and training.

Almost 62, started working out again when I retired just over a year ago. Started doing volume like I did when I was young and jacked, and made gains. Then stumbled upon Mentzer and Yates HIT videos. I started doing HIT and WOW ! Gains have been off the charts ! I also do TRT to keep me in a normal range, take creatine, and I’m Vegan so eat a Whole Foods plant based diet. I am still not lean and want to very slowly drop about 25 pounds, but I packed on some muscle and want to pack on more this year, then in January slowly start cutting. JACKED GRANDPA !

Lee, you're one of the best spokespersons for the bodybuilding industry. You've been around since the 80's and you still look great now. Wow! Some of the older pro bodybuilders have completely left the industry or they are super out of shape. Really sad to see these guys quit entirely. I've been lifting since I was 16 and now just turned 50 and still at it. Ups and downs throughout my lifting career as normal and just recovering from a tendon tear at my lower bicep. Took 2.5 months off and now slowly coming back. Cheers to you Lee!

Content 100%, Deleavery 100%, good for anybody starting with Lee's a very well articulated easy to understand approach. Best I have ever heard. At 53 I was stronger healthier than 23 with 10 rep of 315, 2 reps 405 bench. Leg press with 1200 using my hands and arms to push my legs all the way through the press. I follow an instinctive program from having years of experience. Lee just described the health program that will do more than anything out there.

Lee..you're still looking great. Saw you guest pose in New Jersey in the 80's. You carried on the Steve Reeves, Frank Zane concept of quality over quantity and your posing is something the guys of today could learn alot from. I'm turning 60 in two months and have been out of the gym several years due to severe lumbar disc compression. I had a laminotomy/disectomy in 2012 which helped the radiculopathy down my leg but I still have pain in my lower back. Surgeons are recommending a fusion but I'm scared of it possibly making things worse or causing a domino effect of more fusions. With this kind of surgery there are no guarantees. I used to train 4 days a week and play golf and miss those activities tremendously. Physical therapy hasn't had any positive effect and I'm thinking to just get back in the gym and do what I can. Obviously anything like squats or deadlifts are out of the question. I'll need to use more machines than I did in the past and keep any movements which place downward force on my spine out of my routine. I've been on trt for about 9 years and it's helped keep about 70% of my previous gains and kept me from putting on a lot of bodyfat. Thanks for being a great inspiration Lee.

Great video, I’m 60 and found myself back in the gym about a year ago. I had suffered a rather nasty back surgery number 5 for me. And decided it was time to make a come back. Lol I scheduled an appointment with a nutritionist and spent two hours with a lovely young lady that taught me more about eating right than I had ever known. So really for the first time in my life I’m training hard AND eating right. I’ve been amazed at how quickly the gains have come by fueling the body correctly. My one concern is that I’m over training. I’ve always been a more is better guy so I’m doing a Push, Pull, Legs 3 day split. Followed by one day of rest and then right back at it. I usually train the first three days high intensity 18-20 sets per body part. Then drop back to higher reps less weight and only about 10 sets per body part for the next three days. I would appreciate any educated feedback. Too much??

Wish I could find someone like you and I had the money to hire to help me get back on track. I am 53. I had an industrial accident and broke my neck and back in 6 places, both my arms and my left leg. I have had 26 operations with 47 pieces of titanium in me. Early last year I embarked on getting back in shape and just to try to stop being sedentary. I started out slow and eventually worked up to a four mile treadmill workout with extra light weights. Everything was fine until May when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Had surgery to remove that in July and can say I am now cancer free. I am still recovering from that surgery a bit... I refuse to quit but I really need someone to help me get back on track. I have a very low energy level after being sedentary for over 15 years. I have lost 30 pounds and have kind of hit a wall...I see very little in regards to toning up my muscles and my chest and belly just literally make me sick to look at. I am 6'1" and weigh 215 right now. I was down about 10 more pounds but started gaining muscle...where I do not know...I am just in limbo. My body is riddles with scars and I have a very low self esteem. Folks who know me at the gym I go to say I am their inspiration and I really REALLY enjoy that I can help folks...but I need help too...No one around wants to really step in and help me because f my injuries and fear of me re-injuring myself. Just wish I could win a lottery and hire a pro to get with me for about 90 days and get a good routine going. I don't know what to and not to do on weights. I just guess and go on. It is still painful to do much of my exercise but I just grit my teeth and keep going. When I a on the treadmill my back wants to charley horse for about 20 minutes and then it lets go...strange. I work up a good sweat and burn about 1100 calories on the treadmill each time I go...which is usually 3x a week. I am going to see if any of your videos can hep tailor a routine for me to do...Heck I was shocked this year when I was working out (on the machine) curling 180 lbs...just shocked!!! I have had 14 operations on my left arm and 4 on my right. One of my surgeons has kept telling me I was his best and most miraculous patient... I am so blessed.

Resounding yes, though, the muscle loss comes quicker with inactivity so just have to keep going. Consistent Persistence and over time, check it out in 6 months or a year.

Thanks Lee, you just reinforced my plan! I’m currently working in Afghanistan 12 hours a day, 7days a week so I really do need to use my time wisely. It is a little difficult to get the right diet and maintain. I work by doing pyramids of 10 push-ups, leg lifts, planks, squats and curls. You hen I finish with a 2 mile run. I feel really good afterwards as well. I look forward to seeing your next video!

I'm going to turn 65 in 3 months. I started riding a bicycle, a mountain bike ,one year ago, and found that building muscle mass was no problem at all. I definitely needed to build muscle mass and the bike was one way, (since I have neuropathy) of getting some exercise. I'm lucky to live in the Southwest where biking is possible most of the year. And a love for anything on two wheels helps as well!!! But I try to avoid much in the way of lifting weights. It's too much stress on my many arthritic joints.

From age 30-40 I was into bodybuilding, but I stopped due to my job and family requirements. So...at 68 I took up weightlifting again. I started slowly and made progress bit by bit. At 70, I have built muscle mass again and I train three times a week very hard. The only thing I wish I could fix is a teeny bit of lost elasticity in my skin in certain areas. Outside of that my body looks better than it ever did other than when I was into full- blown bodybuilding as a young man and...I’ve got some pretty good muscle mass.

You still look amazing! Your a true specimen of a person that did not abuse your body and stayed true to a classic physique. Thanks for proving that a mass monster physique is only a short term not a lifelong journey of being fit. 👍👍👍👍

Thanks for the video Lee. I am a 62 year-old, out of shape, ex-military career man (retired now), with a host of medical maladies. But I can exercise some. I just want to lose the fat, gain some muscle and hopefully drop the high blood pressure and diabetes from my body. I am a member of a gym and only do light cardio for now, but I would like to incorporate some weight training. Your video has given me the encouragement to do this, so I thank you for that.

I am 71, I prefer gymnastic rings fo build strength and muscle. Try them gents, just start slow. Before you start with them though, I recommend you have some good basic strength from doing pull-ups, push-ups, shoulder dips and some solid core work.

I have been lifting for 35 years and remember you from all the Muscle and Fitness / Flex magazines I bought in the 80's. It is good to see that you are still in shape. The information you shared was sound and easy to understand. Your delivery is very professional. Keep up the good work. What is your view on the way the bodybuilder's body has changed since the 80's? What are your views about steroids especially with so many young high school athletes using them today? Thanks.

Hey Danny, this is an employee of Labrada Nutrition, this is not a personal RU-vid page of Lee Labrada. Sorry for the confusion. Lee has said that he believes in the aesthetics of bodybuilding, to strive for the ideal physique is more then just mass, it's symmetry and proper proportions. Thanks for dropping by all the best.

But I do have a problem with size. Cannot get my weight past 102kg off season. I know that you not an advocate of roids. I am cycling on anavar Tes and Win. All I can afford. May that be the problem?
