Hey, I know this video is 6 months old, it's exactly what I was looking for!!!!!!!!!!! You did a great job on this!! I have a cement block wall planter in front of my house. All the houses were built here in the 1950's and when the planters were cemented all of therm were (so called) finished with the mortar squeezed out & left to dry. If you look directly at the front of my house the planter looks like a column supporting the post. Recently, I told my husband I wanted to make it have a craftsman shape & he said he didn't know if it could be done. We may have a little engineering issue with supporting the roof correctly. Several years ago I borrowed an air chisel and took off the dried oozing mortar. I am going to show my husband your video.The transformation was great! Thanks for sharing your video

@John Signs Hey, I came back to this video to show my young adults kids how I (Still) want my porch to look & I noticed your comment. Well, as you can see Poor Husband has not gotten to that Honey-doo list. Nope! This is due to the re-engineering required & his motivational issues. I could say more, but I won't! Every now & then I come back to this video & think how nice it could be.....!

I want to build three of these for my home but I have never attempted something like this. I was surprised to see how a Tracksaw work, now with that I think I can pull this off with a good video that shows how to cut the angle on the sides and even the base. I will be doing brick since the face of my front porch is brick. I figured it would cost me $1200 per post to pay to have it done, so if I have to buy a track saw kit a router and a biscuit joiner, I can still come out ahead. Those angles is what I need to learn for the tapered wrap.
@LewisRenovation
@LewisRenovation 4 года назад
The angles are easy with a track saw. Run the track at the taper you want and set the saw to 45°. Let me know if you have more questions.

man that was a lot of work. im wondering what would be faster, routing or just adding similar trim design. Also ive seen this done with just trim nails and glue as its just decorative. have you seen those fail? i hate screw holes

The customer is particular so I quoted it with all the labor needed for this method. But I’m sure there are easier ways of doing it. Good luck!

Nice job. Why did the customer want oak if it’s going to get painted???
@LewisRenovation
@LewisRenovation 2 года назад
They wanted a good wood for outside. Originally tried to build it with cedar but that was way too expensive. White oak was a good compromise

That looks so much like the homes in Taylor, Texas or at least Central Texas somewhere. Where was this neighborhood, if I may ask? I love the beautiful job you did on that column!

@@LewisRenovation What?? I live in Round Rock! My daughter lives in Taylor and her neighborhood has many houses that look very similar to the one that you worked on. But of course, so does Round Rock! I recognised the limestone and that particular style of masonry design.

Bad idea of encasing the wood column in concrete without a drainage plane separating the wood from the concrete. The acids in the concrete will break down the wood in no time flat.
