Love your technique and tips but especially the attitude towards some negative comments. For example, I agree you probably should go back and add more notches and lag bolts, I will, but you’re “SOLID DIY”. Thank you for posting and sharing!
Just a friendly tip when laying deck boards look at end grain you want your grain to go like a rainbow if edges of rainbow feet are up it will warp and trip you after it settles and warps... I never knew this and learned it after doing a deck...
So a lot of people are criticizing your work but don’t quite understand that this is YOUR deck for YOUR house! You do it how you wanna and keep up the great work. Through trial and error we all become better and more effective, all the while gaining precision and knowledge...
I disagree. It's a how-to video that many beginners will rely on so construction methods should be safe and proven. Plus, the builder in this video is building the porch for a client, not for his personal use, so potential liability issues can arise if not done to code.
@@markmoore4088So, what's the lifespan of a porch should be?. Cause I don't see this porch failing before 10 years, and if that's the case, it can easily be reinforced and make last another 10 years.
@FranciscoGonzalez-ro7ht Construction that's done to code should last at least twenty years and not present a safety hazard while doing so. Ten years is no good. That's just my opinion, however.
@@chud327 How easy is it for a regular mobile home owner to build one of these? Do you think Home Depot or Lowe's would be able to advise us? Our 40 year old mobile home's front and back porch both need re-doing. We may ask the handyman who put up our new carport awning how much he'd charge too.
@lkrause74 Did you build your porch? Did it work out well? I live in a mobile and have started dismantling the very rotten porch I inherited when I purchased a few months ago. After having the 'handyman' charge $400/hr to install my doors, I am going to try this on my own. (Yes. $400/hr and that was after I complained and he dropped $250.)
I really appreciate the craftsmanship put into this. I am going to rip out a deck to mobile home built by someone who had no business using a saw. Just gotta mention if you have concerns about moisture on the post. And not using bocks to keep them off the ground?
That was a fun project. I love to build when someone else buys the lumber. May want to use lag bolts in addition to the screws. I wish you were close, I might could have helped. thanks for watching.
It is going on midnight and the temp here in west Michigan is 11* with a wind chill of -1*. Sunday is supposed to be 19* and a 50% chance of snow. It's making the arthritis really hurt. Glad it's warmer where you are. Good job on the deck and the stairs.
Although I would love to experience some snow, I am glad it is warmer here too. I couldn't enjoy snow at 19* anyways... We were down to 27* this morning, but it will only last a few hours. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
I watched a few videos on RU-vid on how to build a deck, and yours is by far the most simple. In the other videos, people put a “plastic” weed killer sheet under the deck so grass doesn’t grow under the deck. Since you didn’t put any under your deck, do you have any problem with weed/grass growing under your deck?
What is the average cost of having an 8' by 10 " porch built. This would be to replace my stoop at my back door ? And also what would it cost to replace doorsteps on a front porch frame?
This is a great video reminds me of the tiny house build in the early framing stages! I like how you put the x brace in! Now let's see the Honda try to pull this one out. Lol
It took a few days for me to realize that the porches were the same size as the tiny houses. Thanks for watching and it would be fun to hook the Honda to the porch...
I built it for the neighbor, so I don't know the exact price. Once he spent about $500 and the next was $600, but there may be more that I am forgetting. I would estimate $1200 - $1400. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Enjoyed your video. Do you have a video or a material list for a 8' x 10' raised porch deck with the 8' side by the wall/house and the 10' are the joists?
It wouldn't be too bad, but I worry about future leaks on attaching to trailers. I just did one with a roof on a house, that was my most recent video. thanks for watching.
Been wanting to build a deck like this on one of my side doors but geniuses that placed my concrete underpinning placed the crawl space access door almost directly underneath the door and it's barely the width of a 2x4 underneath it I don't know what Joist board to use because a 2x6 is too wide I would probably have to use a 2x4 but I don't know how stable that would be.
What if you were to take 2-3 2X4's and glue and screw them together just over the crawl space entrance. I would think that would be plenty strong. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Where I live, if the manufactured house is on a permanent foundation, you could attach a deck to the house. If the house is not on a permanent foundation a deck has to be free standing and not attached.
I am a jack of many trades, however, scientist with out the rocket would be the closest. I am a middle school science by trade. All that other stuff would be in the hobby category. I have been thinking about getting into the homemade shotgun hobby, but I am not there yet. Thanks for watching.
I sure hope so. I am supposed to build a tree house for a guy, but he has not brought it up lately. Thanks for watching and have you seen my tiny house build yet?
hello chud327 this video is amazing . Although very hard for me to do since Ive never done any carpentry or framing I got to make my grandma a porch similar to this one do you think you can help me out&?
@@chud327 Hi. I'm trying to figure this out so I can build my own. If the posts are spaced 4' and 8' on center and the joists are 2' on center it seems they would overlap. Are either of those offset? It appears the joists are to the right of your posts. Thanks!
This would not pass our code in NY. We also need to get about 8 inspections for one deck. We’re trying hard to be like California, to much government, which leads to to high prices for everything.🤪
The front and small side porch were around $630. The side porch was very small, so I would estimate the front porch came in just under $500. I should have added that to the video, I guess I just wasn't thinking. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question.
Found in another video - your not allowed to secure deck to a mobile home thus making it no longer mobile, just as if you put a roof on, it also can only be attached to the deck, and not the mobile home. Gotta love “code”!!
Better late than never, right? Anyway, I find your video educating and interesting, even if it doesn't show how to build Porches but how to build porches. ;-). (Got to drive it home repeating myself.) :o)
I love your video. I have to do this in the AM. I just wish u were a little more louder for me bro. Some angles u were a small distance away and I couldn't hear ya. Plus the saw was going lol. 💪#GreatVideo 👍👍👍👍👍
I have had the last two weeks off and normally I put out a bunch of videos on my days off. This time I have been doing a bunch of videos but few are complete yet. I will try to hurry up and get more out. Thanks for being a consistent watcher / commenter!
Nothing done here is up to code deck should be sitting on concrete footings with proper 4x4 brackets, floor joist not 16 on center. Also should be sitting on top of 4x4 post with 2x10 beams supporting the load not just screwed to posts with screws
In Canada we notch out the 4X4 post to tie in the decking frame . This way all of the weight of the deck will be on the 4X4's . Not on the screws which have very little shear strength. You could have used lag bolts or bolts to hold the frame against the 4X4 . Screws are used to hold things together not to hold up the weight of that deck with all of the people that you plan on being on the deck . I watched you build your Tiny House and you did a great job but this is NO WAY to build a deck . Not safe at all . At least go back and add some lag bolts . I hope you used hanger screws to attach the stairs to the deck and not regular construction screws ( no shear strength with regular screws ).
Notching the post gives a great place for water to sit and rot the wood. Don't notch, use post cap ties and place the beam ON the posts, no way in hell will you get a better way to support the weight.
DaTwistedOne1 That's interesting. I'll look into that. I have a 32 yr old porch on notched posts. But the fit was tight. They lasted well. All the wood is rotted long, except the posts and rim boards! lol. But I know they were fitted well and treatment was probably used on the cut surfaces. In the North as well.
I wish I could get away with doing that but in my township everything has to be let in to the posts and 16” centers on the joists. Also, the posts have to sit on top of the footers using a metal base. Oh well
Over all good job BUT the toe kick at the bottom of the stairs is resting on the dirt, all the water is gonna wick right up the wood . Pour a min slab then rest the wood on that .
I have never split with compact. I wouldn't get any production with pre drill. Also the stairway railing isn't to code pretty much anywhere. Need upper and lower spans with spindle. Also doesn't look rookish..just some tips from 1000 I've done..
I am looking for a contractor to expand my back steps into a sitting porch in SC. I am disabled n would like to sometimes come outside just to sip my tea n listen to the birds chirp..
