Hi Frederick, great video. I have built 4 of the Silverdog boards so far. Here is a tip that will help folks get up and running quicker. Just wash the solder side of the board when you finish soldering. Do this before you populate the board. first with alcohol or a proper solvent then with warm soapy water. A small stiff bristle brush like a toothbrush works great. make sure you dry the board completely prior to powering up .The 7660 chip is very sensitive to flux residue and washing gets rid of it.

It would be nice to 3d print the coil casing..you can get a water prove container....all you need do is place the coil onto the shell and snap together.. You can plastic weld the snap together shell or glue it. The bolt of the shell to connect it to the handle can be made from plastic as well on the 3d printer..now connect the shell to the handle..you can also make a mounting shell making it water proof..

After a lot of experimentation with a DB scope and pulse generator I settled for 20 Turn coil of 1mm wire Dia. 100 ohm damping resistor. I sampled after 30, 60 and 90 microseconds switcheable with secondary sampling at I believe it was 300 microseconds after the end of each pulse. (long time ago). Pulse transistor was at the time a TIP42. Receiver used was an analog devices AD507 IC which was much faster than the old 709`s used at the time. I don`t remember the slew rate offhand but it was fast. Pulse rate I used was either 50 or 200 PPS. The audio generator was a gated Oscillator running at a comfortable audio frequency . VCO`s are horrid to listen to. Power supply rails were regulated. Result ... an excellent PI machine powerful and ultra stable. Coils were 8", 12" and a large 16"diameter one. I loaned it to someone and you can guess the rest. Just thought that this may be helpful to someone.

Being an electronics tech myself, I found this whole video very interesting and cool.... One thing I have not been able to find in these types of videos, is how does one adjust (or find) the null point on a DD coil... I am about to make a coil just for experimental reasons and dont know how the nulling is done. If anyone knows, I would appreciate the info.... (having said all that, I do own a proper detector, a Minelab Explorer of course and im about to buy the next model, the E-Track which seems better... ive also got five different sized coils from the small 5 inch to the 15 inch WOT.... )

loved your video, could you use a metal detector coil cover for your mold? you could fill it with your resin with the two end wires out then when the resin gets cured you could add clay to make a mold for the two brackets on top of your new coil mold and fill them with resin to hold your pole. Do you think that would work?

@GoldfindersAu

the thickness of wires and turns are to suit resistance of the coil only. Powerful magnetic fields can be created using one turn only, but the circuit will fail, burn out or not work well.

Hello, I see that you added the .45 insulated wire, thank you for that. Can you tell us how many loops you made with the wire, and what is the diameter of the loop itself? Having the size of the loop and how many times you wrapped the wire around will be very helpful. Thanks again, great video.

I used .5 at 22 turns and 8 inch diameter, but .45 at 25 turns and 9 inch with a slight elliptical shape should work better. however i found the hard part to be getting the the circuit to work.

@@GoldfindersAu In the USA the wire comes in gauge, and the closest in mm in diameter was 53 gauge, which is ,49 circular Mils nominal. So when you say .45, I found nothing, so give the inductance of the coil, and that will be a good starting point as I can measure inductance.

I have considerd this and concluded that they take me too long to get the board to work 100 percent and they fail with the slightest mistake. my brother is more tec savy than me and he can get them to perform, but he wont help me anymore. so yes it is a tricky project but they can perform well in salty environments and low mineralisation

@tipstricksss1453
@tipstricksss1453 5 лет назад
I thinking more of the yagi antenna design but putting that concept into a small coil, so on a yagi antenna you'd add more elements to get more gain so I was thinking maybe that might work with a small coil by adding more coils to get a more powerful coil.

At 14:26 you said you "used hot melt glue and carved _____ stuck on to the bottom of the bucket" what did you say there? Timber? Just wondering how you were able to carve deep slots in the bucket for the bracket when te bottom of the bucket doesn't seem that thick. So I'm guessing you cut two rectangular holes and then created some kind of cavity to attach to those holes so the melted plastic has somewhere to go. For the hole for the cable. You said to use silicone. Not sure what you mean there but wouldn't using like a pen case in that hole suffice for when you pour the plastic into the mold? That is if the pen case too is non-stick like the bucket plastic.

Hi, Do NOT cover your coil with foil. This idea was used by some manufacturers for their BFO machines as a Faraday shield. Not a complete shield but with a say 10mm gap in it and connected to 0V or ground. This is not required and must not be fitted to a PI coil. Not in my book anyway.

@ralphroc

It's a Pulse Induction circuit, search "surf P.I." on google and you'll find the maker selling out of Europe. It's basically a kit for building the brains of a metal detector, and then you need to build your coil, etc like Frederick's video. It's a tough circuit to build, minimal instructions, and a lot of small soldering to do, but if you can make it, you'll have a $1,000+ detector for a fraction of the cost ($150-200)

u should use allot of more wire with smaller gauge wire, and maybe increase the voltage, that way im just guessing without any bases... u may get better performance
@GoldfindersAu

.point 4 with more turns good idea i was just worried about the wire absorbing the power rather than turning it to magnet fields.
@ORCdot
@ORCdot 10 лет назад
Frederick Barnes i based that comment in work of a guy named Joseph Newman he had a giant spinning magnet powered by allot of 9v bat in series, high voltage and from what i understood of his work, the more wire u have of smaller gauge, more u can increase the voltage and bigger is the magnetic field. i'm not sure if i got the thing right.

Is there any reason that you cannot purchase a professionally made detector loop and use that instead of making your own? Is there anything about the electronics or any other parts that would make that a problem? The casting, etc. seems like a huge hassle to me. I'm confident with the electronics and the shaft/handle/etc. but the casting, while I'm sure I could manage it eventually, seems like a hell of a lot of work.
@GoldfindersAu
@GoldfindersAu 8 лет назад
It is very challenging,- but at the same time rewarding,- as strange as that seams
@tvsinesperanto7446
@tvsinesperanto7446 8 лет назад
Frederick Barnes Actually, after pricing professional coils, I am reconsidering making my own. Most largish coils are $300+. Way too much. Hassle or not, I'm going to need to mold my own. Is there any reason why I could not use a small diameter (say 18-20mm) flexible PVC pipe filled with araldite or hot glue to make a circular enclosure for the coil and then glue some braces in a + pattern up/down and side/side to it in order to keep the geometry from distorting and to provide a mounting point for the pole? Or, how about cutting off all but the bottom 10-15mm of a 300mm diameter plastic bucket, placing the coil into the shallow "dish" that results, placing the coil and then just drenching the entire thing with hot glue, araldite, or some similar waterproof adhesive? Oh, I see that that is exactly what you have done. Is it compulsory to mold the mounts and cut out areas in one piece or can you simply glue them to the coil enclosure later? Apart from being light, waterproof & rigid is there anything else that needs to be considered? On a related note, how do you prevent water, dirt and/or sand from getting in via the hole left for the plug connecting the coil to the cable? Seems like an obvious point of intrusion. Thanks.
@tvsinesperanto7446
@tvsinesperanto7446 8 лет назад
Oh I almost forgot, what are you using to cast the coil enclosure? Is it proper molding material as used by artists/sculptors, etc. or are you just using large quantities of araldite or something?
@GoldfindersAu
@GoldfindersAu 8 лет назад
araldite is best cos it wont shatter
@tvsinesperanto7446
@tvsinesperanto7446 8 лет назад
Holy crap, really? How much did you have to use? That's a hell of a lot of araldite. Do you think casting material would work instead, for example this stuff: www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-500g-cast-and-embedding-resin_p1874117 Or is all casting material prone to shattering?

Frederick Barnes If you went in and out of the nails-as you were making your coil-would that distort your signal-and for the last few rounds could you rope the copper around the circle? In Wires/Cords the signal is boosted by going around the strands-that is why I was asking.

There are various pulse induction detectors around. these are used to power through salt or mineralised Gold fields. they are expensive however. CS4pi by c scope is similar in power but it cant operate well outside salt water.

I dont know but i dont like your chances of unwinding a specialy made coil it in theory should work with new same length same size wire and less turns larger diameter tip-By broken one and reverse engineer it remember you loose sensitivity on smaller objects if you do go bigger i am not an expert but
