How To Build The Modular Articulated Tool Guide System. Get the plans: renewablesystemstechnology.co...
Since the first build video was published, I've had a couple of years to think about improvements for the modular articulated tool guide prototype, and how to move forward with a metal version. I'd noticed that a few folks who've downloaded the plans have come up with their own metal versions, so I figured it's time to stop sitting on this design and take it from Sketchup to the real world.
The only tool attachment that I made this time was for the angle grinder, because the table that the tool guide is attached to is intended for metal working only. I'm building a much larger tool guide in the near future that will attach to a 4x8 table and be used for woodworking only, specifically crosscutting sheets of plywood and surface planing. But with the examples that are shown in the first build, I think you folks will easily understand the versatility and can appreciate the convenience of having something like this in the workshop or even for certain tasks on the job site.
If you haven't seen the original tool guide build, you can check it out here: • Video

How well does the one built in the video hold it's level when cutting a dado over the full extent of it's travel?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 4 года назад
The prototype works excellent. But like I said in the description, the new guide is only for metal working, I'm building a separate guide for crosscutting plywood and surface planing. Like anything in this world, if you build them accurately, then they'll perform accurately - the quality depends on the builder ;)

@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 4 года назад
Off the table with a builder's square. As long as a person builds the table square and flat, then it will serve as a good benchmark.

So it can just spin freely? It'd be nice to have adjustable angle control for exact angle cuts.
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 3 года назад
Yes, if you loosen the set screws in the locking collars. Otherwise, you can lock it at any angle you want around a 360° axis. Grinder can be locked for compound cuts as well. But I built this for my needs, since it's in my shop ;) Others can do whatever they want however they want
@tawantae
@tawantae 4 года назад
@ I just start doing metalwork. At around 02:42 is it ok to grind with a cutting disc? Are there any caveat, and how often do you do it? I really like your content. Hope to see more usage of fiberglass with iron :D
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 4 года назад
Hi, thanks! Slow the clip down and you can see that 99% of what's happening is a cutting action - not grinding ;) I first removed the majority of the material with a 1/32" thick cutting wheel, because they cut the fastest. I then switched to a 1/8" grinding wheel to make a series of straight cuts and remove the rest of the material, with some LIGHT grinding near the end. The trouble with using a cutting wheel to grind begins when the user puts lateral pressure on the wheel which will cause it to bend and potentially break, but it will also taper the edge of the wheel. This is dangerous because when you go to cut something with the wheel again, the fine tapered edge is likely to break, and when the broken edge makes another rotation around and hits the work piece again it can snowball into a nasty explosion in the blink of an eye. The force applied to a cutting wheel should always be inline with the edge of the wheel - the wheel is strongest on it's edge. My 'rule of thumb' is to never do any grinding with a wheel thinner than 1/8". 1/8" or thicker is more of a dual purpose cutting/grinding wheel but with limitations. 1/4" or thicker is suitable for heavy grinding. But this is in general. In actuality, not every 1/8" grinding wheel is created equal. Some are designed to do more cutting than grinding, or vice versa. Using the right wheel really comes down to reading the labels on the product when purchasing to make sure it's designed for the task ahead.

Would be neat to integrate an accelerometer so you can set angle of the grinder.
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 3 года назад
Don't accelerometers measure acceleration? Vertical angle can be set by loosening the bolt that fastens the grinder to the arms (where the handle usually goes in the grinder) and use a speed square for angle reference. Horizontal angles are set the same, except by loosening the set screw in the locking collars. Easy peasy :)
@GoatZilla
@GoatZilla 3 года назад
@@JamesBiggar Yeah they measure acceleration, i.e. the gravity vector. But you'd also need to know the angle of the table too so yeah ultimately just use the regular methods.
