Couple of questions? 1) How does it do on hills or diches, when mowing on an angled surface? Will one side be u in the air while the other is on the ground? 2) I have to drive across a sidewalk and concrete driveway while mowing, does it transition across that type of surface ok?

It will make full contact with the ground on hills, if it were to come off the ground, you are mowing too steep an angle and better hold on 😃. You will have no problem crossing sidewalks or your driveway, the wheels roll across any surface.

Nice striper you built. Do you need a bushing for each wheel or just where you welded on the flat steel?

Thanks! You just need a bushing where you weld the flat steel to the tube that holds the 3/4" rod.

Ok, one more question. The brackets that you made, where the bushings slide in. How wide are they? Did you use 4 bushings, two in each bracket (facing each other), or did you just use one bushing on each (two total)

What happens when you turn around on the driveway or sidewalk? Does the striper drag across the pavement?

If you turn too sharp, it will slide across instead of roll.

Which bushing did you buy? The link in the description didn’t bring up a specific one. I’m assuming you bought a steel bushing to weld the flat stock too.

The flat stock was welded to a larger steel tube. That then has a Hillman 3/4” ID bronze bushing inside. The length of the bushing will vary depending on your own preference and build design. I have just updated the link to the bushings used in this build. Hope this info helped.

The way it is setup it weighs 35 pounds. If you wanted more weight, you could add a piece of steel support between the two attachment arms just above the wheels.

Can you comment on how the mower turns at the end of a row? Do the rollers damage the turf while turning?

The striper glides across the turf while turning sharp. No damage at all to your lawn. Your tires will tear the turf slightly if mowing with a zero turn, so be careful there.

Just curious, wouldnt it work better if the rollers were not able to spin? It seems it would push the grass in the direction you want, better, instead of rolling over it?

Possibly. But I would think the rollers would wear out quickly and there would be a lot more stress on the lawn mower trying to drag the striper behind instead of pulling it. It does weigh a fair amount which is why it stripes so well.

You don't need any rollers going past the inside edge of the rear tires because the tires themselves will stripe. That would have saved you $40-$50.

It's the way the light reflects off of the blades of grass, the angle the blades are laying will determine whether it is light or dark in appearance.

We used scrap steel so I just needed to buy the wheels. I got them on sale, the total cost was $160. The highest expense are the wheels, watch for them to go on sale usually for $11.96.

Is your solid piece of steel tubing that goes through your rollers welded to your 1” piece of steel?

The 1" flat steel is attached to a steel tube with bushings inside that fits over the solid steel round. This way you can slide out the solid round steel if you ever need to replace the rollers. If you were to weld it directly to the flat steel, the rollers in the center would be permanent. Hope that makes sense.

You sure can, just be sure to size it correctly to the width of your mower deck, and so it's not too close to your feet.

I don’t see how this design works when it turns. I feel like the force of it when it turns makes it pivot and apply force to pop out the bushing

It's the same design principle as CheckMate stripers. I haven't had any issues with the bushing coming out. I'm not sure that they could, unless you removed the wheels first. Thanks for watching!

I think either one would work fine. It's more the weight of the unit then the style of rollers used. The heavier the striper, the more pronounced the stripes will be. Enjoy!

Kentucky Bluegrass is a really nice turf. It can be high maintenance, but worth it. I had it for years until my trees got big with lots of leaves casting lots of shade on the lawn. KBG just didn't do well with the shade. KBG loves sunlight, although there are some variants that can tolerate the shade. TG if you have direct sunlight and irrigation, KBG would be a good choice, especially midnight. His environment is perfect for KBG. Man, I miss KGB. I'm mostly Turf Type Tall Grass now.

Thank you! At the time I built it, I had roughly $160 into it. I purchased the wheels when they went on sale and used some scrap steel lying around. It would cost around $250 depending on your total width if you had to purchase everything.

That's the nature of Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass, very heavy stripes. My front lawn is perennial ryegrass, although it stripes very easy, they do not last more then two days. KB stripes will last until the next mow.

I have a great idea that I think will work the best! Use a little common sense and ask yourself what makes our hair sit down? A Comb! So build a comb like structure built at an inward angle so it replicates combing your hair. This should be guaranteed to work the best. When I run a bunch of rubber tires over my hair it does nothing. But a simple comb lays it down.

Lol, great analogy. I've seen a few people using garage broom brushes as their striper. They work about the same as the roller setup, but the brushes can tear and hurt the turf easier.

I've never had a stripe kit on any of my mowers and always had dramatic stripes. I can honestly say I don't know of anyone who uses one. I get compliments on my yard all the time

I like your idea here. I disagree with one thing though. The striper should be wider than the rear tires. It should be almost as wide as the mower deck or blade tip to blade tip if the deck is wider than the rear wheel track. If not you will see the tire tracks.

Yeah that's a no go there bud. The striper needs to be at the very least in the middle of the drive wheels. The wheels make stripes from the weight of the mower already. Your idea would roll the grass one way and then roll it the other way. You are not including the idea of overlapping. Big league stripers explains this perfectly
