Essential Oils and Incense: Learn how to burn resin incense with bamboo charcoal. You can buy a beautiful handmade incense bowl here: www.aromatics....
Bamboo charcoal is so much more natural and healthy than self-igniting charcoal, which contains lighter fluid and other toxic ingredients.
It does take a bit longer to burn resin incense with bamboo charcoal, because the charcoal takes longer to ignite. A smaller-sized tab, which you can see at 0:48, takes over 30 seconds to ignite. There's no spark, but you can see how it looks when ignited at 1:30. (It glows on the end.) A piece this size burns for about half an hour.
Once the bamboo charcoal is ignited, you can put it in a ceramic bowl and sprinkle your resin incense or powder right on top of it (1:55). It’s okay if some incense falls to the side. As long as the incense is touching the bamboo charcoal, it will burn. My incense is homemade with copal and rosemary leaves. I just love that I can add my own ingredients, and even sprinkle essential oils onto the resin!
A bigger tab of bamboo charcoal (seen at 3:23) will burn for about an hour. For this piece of charcoal, I’m using sandalwood powder from India (4:25).

Why does incense play such a key role in so many medicinal and spiritual traditions around the world?
How does incense work to help us access deeper levels of wisdom and healing?
Can you tap into these properties of incense and enhance your essential oil practice?
I can answer the last question for you . . . YES! When you understand how to use incense and how to “listen” to it, you can bring new dimensions to your Aromatherapy practice. My friend Eric, owner of the Northwest School of Aromatic Medicine, can answer the first 2 questions and so much more!
The “Listening to Incense” Home Study Course is offered by the Northwest School of Aromatic Medicine. It can teach you how to use incense in traditional and modern ways, so you can bring nuance and wisdom to your Aromatherapy practice. You’ll have the opportunity to experience for yourself why so many people love incense, and how it can put us in touch with your own roots, your own wisdom, and your ability to connect with the world in meaningful ways. Learn more about the course here! bit.ly/Listenin...

I stopped using charcoal with incense a few years back due the way it left soot on our ceiling and concerns about toxicity. I didn't know about the Japanese style of charcoal and I will now be ordering some soon. You also gave me some good ideas about being creative by adding herbs like rosemary to incense resins. Thank you for your video!

Andrea Butje the bamboo charcoal arrived and I used it with frankincense resin and rosemary to bring in the New Year. Loved it! It didn't have the toxic smelling, heavy smoke of the standard self lighting charcoal. I think It is worth the slightly longer lighting time for cleaner burning. Thank you again for your video demo! Happy New Year!

I miss Andrea - Aromahead Institute has changed hands. There is too much focus on selling “stuff” . Andrea used to post lovely quotes on Aromahead FB and beautiful recipes. Andrea is also softly spoken and not gushy I wish she would start up her own RU-vid channel again.

Hello! We prefer bamboo or hinoki charcoal because they do not have any lighter fluid in the charcoal as some of the regular charcoal rounds. They are available at Aromatics International. www.aromatics.com/products/charcoal-tablets 💜

Can the bamboo charcoal be broken easily with one’s fingers? I use only a small amount of resin, so I tend to break my normal charcoal in four smaller pieces, just to minimize wasting.

Hi ClioMako! The pieces of bamboo charcoal are quite small and compact. To break them into smaller chunks to suit your preference you could use scissors. scents-of-earth.com/bamboo-charcoal-small-baieido/

Hi great content . I cant help but noticing you have a glass top stove , a simple square of tinfoil placed on the smallest burner on med and a piece of resin ,bakhoor ,incense, essential oil ect placed ontop of that will totally replace the need for charcoal ! The traditional way is waaayyy out . Peace .

So I order some bamboo charcoal but it came in 4" long spikes that I would need to cut down. They are about half an inch diameter and almost impossible to light? Any suggestions for cutting and getting them started?
@aromatherapyoils

Bamboo Charcoal sticks are often used as a natural and simple way to filter tap water. Unfortunately, we are not sure about what the best way to cut them would be as we like to use Bamboo Charcoal discs. They are available at Aromatics International. www.aromatics.com/products/charcoal-tablets

How much essential oil to the resins would you add?
@aromatherapyoils
@aromatherapyoils 3 года назад
Hi Merja! To be honest, we don’t usually measure our ingredients when making incense recipes! It’s more of a creative process than a technical one. But we wanted to give you measurements to use as a “reference point.” You can adjust your ingredients as you like! 💜 To add essential oils, simply drop them right onto your resin. Here is a recipe you could try: 5 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) 4 drops Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) 1 drop Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mo9JcrzpBEc.html

Thanks for the info Andrea. After watching your video I searched all over Boulder for these and no one, not even the Tibetan or apothecary shops, carry anything without toxic lighter fluid. Your videos are great - please keep it up. I'll be watching them all no doubt. ☺

(12-18-19) How do you stop it from burning with the burnt smell?
@aromatherapyoils
@aromatherapyoils 4 года назад
Hi Rah Sadeen! Burning resin incense should create a fragrant smoke rather than a burnt smell. It would be hard to know for sure what may be happening for you. Perhaps try a different type of charcoal. Here are two types we recommend: scents-of-earth.com/bamboo-charcoal-small-baieido/ www.aromatics.com/products/charcoal-tablets
