Great video! I'd be interested if you tried leaving out 1 or 2 grits of sanding paper and how big of a difference that made.
@NorfolkHandmade

It’s a good question. I’ve since changed my process and now it only includes 220-400-canvas. I also added a dremel tool to speed up the process. I’ll make another video at some point with my updated process.

Thank you so much for sharing! I literally just started learning leather crafting and I am just about to start stitching for the first time.... a keychain made from the only real and quite small piece of leather that I scrapped from a fake Louis Vuitton purse! One day I will be able to work with high quality leather and attempt to do what you just show us! Until then I will be practicing on veg tan scraps!

Your welcome! I’ve got a quick 2 minute video on saddle stitching if you haven’t watched it, it’s the video I needed when I first started. Good luck with the craft, it’s incredibly rewarding when you can start making functional objects for your self. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Great job with the edge finishing, although the total of the layers is a little on the thick side. They could have done with skiving down to 0.6-0.8mm so that total thickness was in the 1.4mm-1.6mm range
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade 3 месяца назад
For sure, I was going for the multi layered look. If I was edge painting I would skive it down. For this style wallet a 3-6mm edge is my preference, gives a nice sold edge to see the layers.

Very interesting video. Like the idea of the plane. Was surprised to see the clamping block. I thought I wasvthe only person to use them for leather work. (I have a machinest background) Thanks for sharing.

My apologies if this has been asked and answered within 56 comments, *_but,_* would this be practical for a belt? The edge length, working time, and overall strain in a lifetime of use for a belt seem like they'd be considerations. Being so polished, would the burnish 'crack' with the amount of flex a belt receives? I see from one of your replies that you've amended your process to reduce a couple of sanding steps. Awesome work and attention to detail! I had the block deck and the cylinder head mating surface of my Honda's engine nearly mirror-polished, too. Ha! There's a good feeling that comes from striving for excellence. 😁
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for the question and thanks for watching. Since filming this I have changed my process considerable. Not because this one didn’t work but because I needed to reduce the time in order to keep up with orders. The logic still applies but the number of steps can be reduced where appropriate. For a belt I wouldn’t recommend putting in this much effort. The edge will wear down and loose it’s polishing very quickly. I would suggest a more utility edge finish for belts.

I haven’t tried that…I have a ton of Tokonole left so I haven’t branched out yet.
@DylanJ0069
@DylanJ0069 Год назад
Hey Justin, thanks for the useful info! Are you using a lot of pressure on the sand paper when sanding?
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade Год назад
Your welcome, no, I try and avoid using a lot of pressure since it can mushroom the edge. If you find yourself using a lot of pressure because the sandpaper isn’t working fast enough, use a lower grit. Sometimes you’ll have to go back from 600 to 240 if you’ve missed a spot.
@gijoe7930
@gijoe7930 Год назад
This was very helpful! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Just one question, when you’re using wet sand are you actually applying water to the sandpaper or is wet sandpaper just the type of sandpaper being used? Could you please clarify? Thanks!
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade Год назад
I’m glad it was helpful. I use wet sandpaper because I find regular sandpaper gets clogged up easily when using a compound like Tokonole. However, regular sandpaper does work if it’s all you have access to.
@BBgunX22
@BBgunX22 Год назад
When he says wet sand he means tokonole and then sand again. He doesn't mean literal wet sanding like you would with blades. No water involved here. And as for the sandpaper itself he says to use the dry/wet sandpaper which means it works for both dry and wet sanding. Dry only sandpapers don't work well when wet either with water or in this case Tokonole. Hope I was able to clarify it a bit more.
@creativemando

What tool did you use after the edge beveller? (brass head with black handle) I'm new to the craft and haven't seen that one before. What is it's purpose?
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade Год назад
That is an electric edge creaser. It adds the crease along the outside of the wallet.
@InfiltratorChris
@InfiltratorChris Год назад
so by wetsanding do you mean just sanding with tokenole on the edge? Or are you actually wetting the sandpaper?
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade Год назад
I am sanding with Tokonole on the edge. I don’t apply any water or Tokonole directly to the sandpaper.

Thanks for such a nice video, i have sinabroks tools, amazing well made tools, but i have one issue of them, the teeth is wide alot, about 2.5mm , not easy at all to postion, i got also kevin lee tools, much more eaiser to work with and the teeth wide much less and smaller, in wallets and small leather goods much better, im not talking about the spacing between each teeth, i mean the teeth size 🧐👏🏼
@NorfolkHandmade

Interesting, I haven’t noticed an issue width of the teeth before. But my only comparison to Sinabroks is the irons from Pro Atelier Plus.

@TheShredder316 7 месяцев назад
but why did you wait to bevel after sanding? I guess beveling would make the edges more round that this
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade 7 месяцев назад
I found with this process that the sanding rolled over the edge. So it needed to be beveled after the initial sanding.
@BBgunX22
@BBgunX22 Год назад
What would the process be if you wanted to edge dye? Would you add dye in between grits as well? Or at the end after you've gone through all the grits?
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade Год назад
Edge dying is a whole different ball game. Basically you would sand the sand smooth with just sandpaper, add paint, let dry, sand back until it’s perfectly smooth. Repeat until the edge is covered and smooth. Probably 4-5 coats depending on how much gets sanded back.
@BBgunX22
@BBgunX22 Год назад
@Norfolk Handmade and then after that apply multiple coats of tokonole between sanding?
@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade Год назад
No Tokonole when edge dying. If you want the edge polished than you’d use heated wax at the very end.
@BBgunX22
@BBgunX22 Год назад

To sharpen leather shears, use a large sheet of Reynolds Aluminum Foil and with the shears, cut as many narrow strips of the foil as possible. Then, try cutting a thin to moderate weight piece of leather and be awesomely amazed.................!!!!

@NorfolkHandmade
@NorfolkHandmade 5 месяцев назад
It does take a little long for sure. But to say it doesn’t look great is unreasonable. It’s a perfectly acceptable edge for the vast majority of people paying for handmade wallets. I’ve since updated my process and it takes about 20 minutes to get a mirror edge. Have a peak at my Instagram account and you can see my results.
