How To Bustle an Illusion Train Wedding Gown
Many modern trains are offering a fresh new look of multi-length trains. The trains are different lengths and are often cut differently as well. This presents the need to #bustle in layers. This video will show you one way to bustle. The options are endless, really. This video will also help beginner bustlers to see a good mix of the #sewingtechniques that bridal seamsters use.

Thanks so much! Two days before my daughter's wedding I realized her dress didn't come with a bustle! It's an illusion gown, too. I was able to do the bustle using your instructions, even though I've never done one before.

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I was "vountold" to alter my SIL's wedding dress and had three weeks to do so! It was seven layers, 4 of which were tulle, and this video helped SO MUCH with figuring out how to bustle it. Painting the hardware is genius! You can't see them in any of the photos, and I'm even trying to look for them! It was a mermaid dress so the bustling was difficult for me to wrap my brain around. I ended up doing a French bustle for the satin and organza layers and an American bustle for the outer tulle layers. It wasn't the prettiest and I'm still not 100% pleased with it, but no one tripped on it or ripped it! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

My cousin is getting married in less than 3 weeks. She had a dress picked out and tailored, then she had a freak out moment and found another dress she likes better. We’ll have the dress back from being hemmed about a week before the wedding and then the tailor wants the dress again to do the bustle. So I’m scouring all the bustle videos I can in case my cousin freaks out on leaving it at the tailors days before the wedding. This looks super simple to do so I’m glad to know what’s going on, on the off chance I’ll be asked to make her one. Your videos have been ever so helpful and will have to watch all of them to get my courage up to try out more of these tips and tricks. My forte is memory bears, haven’t been brave enough to dabble in clothing yet lol. Thank you!

I use crochet loops but I always anchor them and go thru the last loop and adhere it to the dress. So it doesn't slip. Always do 3 close off stitches. I also use ribbons for under bustles. I usually do a soft blue for the middle if it has more than one bustle point. The more points it has the more shades of cream or white I use so they don't get confused about what ribbon gets tied where. The most extensive one I ever did was 14 points. It was one of those Alfred Angelo gowns with the colored inset. This one was claret red and almost cathedral length. I did a tiered bustle and used different colors for the middle and then numbered the ends of the ribbon that tied together. It looked like a Roman shade but it was pretty lol. I like the snap you use. Very sturdy looking!!!

Love your technique with the snaps! I usually bustle the satin layers tucking them under to create a smoother satin layer, up high if that makes sense instead of French bustling the satin layer.

This was fascinating! I am a costumer and do bustles and bum rolls of various periods of fashion I had never heard of bustling in this way since I have never worked with regular wedding dresses and real-world techniques . I put buttons on usually rather than hooks though there are no absolutes on any of this. But I like buttons on the up side and fish line loops for the lower. The fish line is 20lb to 30lb test so it is much heavier than what one thinks of. Sometimes leader line is the only kind you can find that is crystal clear and not blue tinted. I use a small bead on the outside and a clear backer button behind for extra support on the fabric. I can leave these loops as long as is necessary not to ruin the loft of any gown and they can be tied tighter right when the dress is bustled. It also works with hooks. I search far and wide for buttons that really blend into gowns and even covered them myself with a hem scrap but sometimes you just can't. That's when I go for a hook which sometimes can be covered with a little lace bit if the bride doesn't like the way it looks. I love seeing how other people have solved these issues! Any technique for the arsenal is always great!

I've been altering wedding gowns for over 35 years. Your video was very comforting knowing that I have been on the right track in bustling multiple layers of a variety of fabrics AND widths. The jury is always out for each gown. Brides don't understand the work that goes into bustling and the Bridal stores tell them nothing. Thanks for the video. Maybe you can do one that has multiple layers with different widths? I've had several that the middle tule/netting layer is wider than the top layer. I about lost my mind. But I played with it and it came out beautiful! Thank you!

Thank you for your quick reply. Im having trouble figuring out how to cut and make a dress look and lay correctly when each layer (their are 5 ) has different volume or widths. It usually baffles me when cutting from the sides while grading it to a point on the train area. Is it best to put the dress on a mannequin or cut the layers while hanging? I had to cut about 6.5” off the front so Im trying to grade it nicely towards the back area of the train. I hope you dont mind answering another question for me. I have another dress thats has a deep v to the waist line and its gapping in the front. Is it ok to put a dart in the front and hide it with lace or should i try to take it in at the shoulder point? @@rebeccahempe6699 With several layers and widths of tulle it cant be even if you are doing the American Bustle. With tulle my ultimate outcome it to bustle the train... EACH layer separately to the floor and cut off any access. You will have at least 5 points for each layer. I let it flow the way it's going to flow coming down the isle. Tulle does it's own thing especially when you have 3 different types of tulle. They will be bustled longer than the walk down the isle. Wish I had a picture to show you. All my TULLE brides have been elated by their bustles!.

I have been altering gowns since 1990. The shop I started with used hooks or satin covered buttons. I was invited to several of the weddings I altered for. I saw that the buttons came apart, and the loops popped off the hook when the bride sat down. It was embarrassing. I started thinking of ways to eliminate these breakdowns in performance. I started using flat, clear or matte, two hole buttons when I could hide them under lace at the 'waistline. When I can not hide the button I use a cut/faceted button that blends in to the fabric/lace. For the loops, I use either gosling cord or 1/8" to 1/4" ribbon to match fabric, and put it thru the train about 1/4" to slightly wider apart if button is wide....and tie an overhand knot with the tails underneath the gown.The loop lies flat until you need to pull it up to use it. I have many other devices for doing flip trains, etc but those are the basics. I do enjoy your videos immensely

I would like to learn about the elastic banding with bra extenders that is inserted at the back of the gown; i.e. the name of it, the purpose of it, how it is configured, etc. I am working on learning more efficient ways to keep strapless gown from slipping. When I do the crochet loops,I find stitching through the fabric and then finishing through the crochet chain keeps from slipping. That drives me nuts too! I am loving watching your way of doing things. I have learned so much already!

Yes, if you noticed, I stitched through the left side, but not the right. Ideally, one would stitch through both sides. Do you often see the loops without the extra tack and slipping, though? I feel like I see that a lot. Of course, the extra tacking still doesn't fix the issue of the loop only being as strong as the number of threads that come off your needle. Did I even explain that right in the video? Man, that was hard to describe & I wondered if it made any sense at all. 😂🤯 Lol

Twill tape. It holds a tie much better than the satin. Number the tapes. The last that I did held up so well. My daughter had a friend in Savannah. Her tapes, satin, kept falling out of the dress. Her mother was livid, as to she spent a fortune bustling that gown. It was outside and they partied till the cows went home. That expensive dress was ruined. Seriously. Twill, 1/4” twill. 👍🏻

I love your videos. I learned some awesome stuff! It amazes me how we all do it differently but get the same result. I never thought to do the snap with the extra thread length for the fluffing of the train! And I love the ribbon idea for the French bustle. Do you charge per bustle? Or per point or for a whole? The places I have worked in did both options.

I do 3$ per tack. $6 per snap set. $25 per bustle. Mine are pretty cheap compared to others in my state. This bustle would have been $118. A lot of places charge $200-$250 for it.

Yes, the area really matters. I go for fairness all around. I make an avg income for my area. I don't need to make an unfair amount, but it is not right to under-charge either. My family deserves time with their mom or a fair living. There's no way I'm taking my precious time away from my kids and giving it away for free, (job-wise.) 😊

I like the way you do the French bustle however it is very hard to color code on very shear dresses. For the most of the 50+ I have done in the last year cream and white is as far as I can go with different colors some I have had to use organdy ribbon. Your illusion train was done well. I am so thankful for your videos. They have helped me so much! I am trying to decide how to bustle a train on a silk wedding dress that has an overskirt of solid silk. There is no lace or other trim to hide the mechanics. What would you suggest?

I'm sorry, but I can't. The bustle is a personal thing. The choice is determined by many factors; the bride's height, the environment she is having her reception in, how she wants it to perform, and her personal taste in how she wants it to look. On the kind of dress you describe, some brides would pick a single American demi bustle, (one point on the outside.) Other brides would pick, possibly a triple french. There's just no telling. You have to pin it up for them a few different ways and let them pick. They'll also want to walk around in it and see how it feels bustled.

I am making a bridal dress with a spaghetti straps, teardrop type of bodice with embroidered beads and pearls on a four ways Tull. I am not sure what to do with the breast support, how to incorporate something to enhance the cleavage beautifully, without looking like a breast pad. Thanks for another amazing video. I'm attempting to do a similar bustle, and the satin layer has no train, but there are two graduated lace illusion train layers, the top layer being the longest. Note the hemline has high and low peaks as well. I see you pushing/adjusting the lace top layer to fit the snap bustle position. Can you help me understand how to do this please. I tried and it pucker the outer most lace layer when I spread out the train.

I noticed on this dress that the bustles were all at the seat...I'm assuming that since you showed us this that it holds up to being sat on. I was just wondering if it had ever been a problem.

It can be a comfort issue for the bride, just like buttons down the back can be. Some sensitive brides may mind it, but I"ve never had one care too much about it. Most of my brides don't count on sitting very much and instead focus on mobility. The hooks that I use are not the little wimpy hooks. They are quite strong. I think that would make a difference as well.

I have played with several different bustle styles on this dress but the fabric is so thick it just doesn't fall in a very pretty way. How would you approach this fabric to bustle it? It's a F&F silhouette. Thank you!

Hey! I did, thanks! It is my favorite holiday. ❤ I generally think in statistics with these types of bustle questions. Most of my brides would pick a 5 point french bustle that is rigged right where the break in the skirt is where the flare starts. If the train is just the right length & width, a single traditional that connects just above her tail bone may look very pretty as well.

Some gowns just aren't born for the bustle, you know? Some look sooo beautiful bustled. I'm thinking a ballroom bustle may look good as well, but I usually discourage those because they put a ring of dirt and abrasions across the middle of the train.

if the bride doesn't like that the 3 hooks show, how would you cover them up?

You can always take a little flap of lace and tack it over the hooks & cover them up. But, most brides in my experience do not mind the hooks, and like I said, you can always touch them up to match perfectly. I touch mine up with chalk paint so there's no shininess about them at all when they're on the dress. They really blend in after that.

Hey, Ginger! It is called "crinoline" just in case you ever need to look it up -and maybe that was auto-correct that got you. No big deal either way! I mess up all the time. :) Thanks for asking. I approach this by asking the customer. I show her how poufy it will be, both down & bustled. Then, we cram the crinoline layer between her ankles to pretend that it is gone & survey the fullness of the train, both down & bustled without the thick crispy tulle layer. I then let her choose. (They usually choose to have it cut to floor length, but it is their gown/ their choice.) :) I hope this helps! :)

How would you bustle a train that is all tulle without any lace - I am having trouble trying to figure out the best way to do it with out seeing exactly where the hooks etc are when the train is down

Same way. Sometimes the hooks are a little visible. You can paint them to match, or even sew a small swatch of tulle over them to camouflage them. Some people also use clear buttons with loops. Each dress is different, really.

I use organza ribbon, at the top and bottom points, then have a seperate ribbon that ties those two together. I angle cut the ends, stiffen with a titch of fray stop fluid, and pin that ribbon under the lining to retrieve for bustling

How do you bustle a gown when the lace is only around the bottom and there is a under layer going into the lace area. There isn't a middle seam in that area either.

So help me understand… rather than cutting around, you cut through and then just remove the parts that dont look great. That’s what you mean by lift off? Sorry… Im kinda dense. But learning. I keep looking at your lace trimmings and think of all the collage art I could do with that. Eek! Im a collage scrap voyeur. 😱

Yes I think you have it. When I say lift off, I'm talking about taking the razor and separating the lace from the tulle to remove that bit of lace.
