Great info!!! I learning wing foiling. Right now in PA the lake's water tension is very 'thick' so learning the wing with Wing Skiing. Last fall I successively used the lake as a netipot and wash the back of my brain. Thanks for info. For newbies nose plugs aren't the coolest but they work great! Thanks again for great info. This is a phenomenal breakdown of the overwhelming amount of information in the world of hydrofoils and the various sports that have adopted them. As an aspiring foiler, this is the single most succinct yet informative resource there is. Thanks again for your efforts. Other than Matt Nuzzo from REAL watersports, you are an industry lead in communicating how to best get into the sports. I really hope you are appropriately compensated by Axis, Armstrong, etc! Other than buying that specific Axis setup, what is the best way to support you? Suggestion: I'd love an infographic of your recommendations summary. It would be nice to consume the info in a single pdf as opposed to video. Make sure to brand it so you get appropriate credit!

Thanks for making such a concise video covering all the foiling variants! My only comment is your generalization about aluminum masts being stiffer than carbon masts. Lots of exceptions to that statement.
@WakeThief
@WakeThief Год назад
That’s fair, but I still haven’t found a carbon mast stiffer in torsion (yaw direction) and my favorite, stiffest mast is still the axis 19mm aluminum. Carbon masts tend to have carbon layup focused on bending at expense of torsion and are still favoring low drag (thin, short chord) ahead of slightly higher drag aluminum masts that tend to be thicker and longer chord which helps stiffness.
@WakeThief
@WakeThief Год назад
Please check out our axis carbon mast review. It’s still the stiffest carbon mast we’ve found and we prefer the aluminum over carbon.

I have a question, so I found a used cabrinha high rise lift foil, would that be good for behind a boat and surfing pretty small boat wakes and maybe pumping wake to wake once and a while, and would a cheap wakesurf board with holes drilled into it to mount the hydrofoil be good, or should I find a actual hydrofoil board, I’m trying to keep it as cheep as I can right now. It seems like a ton of fun and I have a great little run about for this, but getting into it is so expensive, would that set up be good? Or do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

I’ve drilled holes in a skateboard and a wake skate. A lot of different board alternatives can work … whatever scratches the itch! Good luck.

Wow this buyers guide really improved from the previous one. The way you planned all subjects, talked slowly and with the infographics made it really comprehensive. Good Job! I still do have one question where i would like to have your opinion. I’ve heard you say that a rider of 150lbs/68kg only needs 1300sqcm instead of 1700 for similar experience (small wakes and dock start). I (65kg, and no experience) currently have my eyes on a foilset that meets all requirements for the fuselage, mast and front wing except the aspect ratio. The front wing is: - 1300sqcm - 79cm span - 21cm tow Which gives me an aspect ratio of 3.8… do you think i can get away witht his aspect ratio because i’m a lightsr rider or is it for me also recommended to go for a wing with 7 or higher aspect ratio?
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 2 года назад
Jimmy! Awesome question and thanks for the response. My views have evolved. I now wish I was 150lb and a 1700sqcm / 7 aspect ratio would let me fly much longer … but, I always have to ask if the 150lber wants to carve as easily as I do. With less weight it’s harder to roll a large span wing over. If they say yes, they wanna do more than pump, I usually size them down like you mentioned in your comment. If they say they want to pump I show them our world record pump video when 145lb Will Culberson pumped a 1700sqcm / 7 AR foil for >6min! I’m so jealous. Let me help you directly. Email me please at wakethief@icloud.com. I love your depth.
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 2 года назад
I didn’t answer your aspect ratio question. I think this foil has a 4.8 (span x span divided by area), which is low to mid aspect. High aspect has lower drag which is always nice but comes at the expense of more sudden lift / takeoff and more challenging roll control (carving). Up to 7/8 seems great with diminishing return beyond that.

Amazing vid! Any advice here?: Trying to decide between Hover Glide FSup (Infinity 84 wing) and HoverGlide FCarve (Quantum 84 wing) also looked at Fpump (Quantum 100 wing). I'm around 220lbs. Riding behind a wake boat. Current intermediate skillset...but don't want to buy something 'less difficult to learn' that I'll eventually get bored of. Priorities are 2nd wave carving, and I'd also like to be able to learn to wing foil in ~10 - 15 knotts wind. Hoping to find a sweet spot, as I don't plan on buying a new wing ever month :)

I was wondering if the real need to foil longer is to design a foil mast set up that allows the mast to be closer to the front foil pivot point. In other words the rider typically sets up with a foot position that straddles the front wing and uses mostly front foot pumping motion. The back foot is not engaged nearly enough. By redesigning the mast so it is mounted at the pivot point of the front wing you might have a more rocker like motion where front pushes down as back pulls up. A board would be slightly rockered with the mast track center board. Straps also become important to efficiently transfer power. The current mechanical motion works but is likely not as efficient as a rocking motion. Again just an observation but would really like to hear thoughts on this.
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 2 года назад
I think you're right, but for another reason. If we could get the mast closer to the front wing, we would reduce the bending / deflection that would happen at many of the joints. I also think you're right regarding foot placement. There's definitely an opportunity to better rebalance forces between the legs, as the back foot tends to get tired first because it's carrying most of the load. Straps makes a ton of sense. I will try it. Thank you!

Since efoil drag is dominated by the motor/prop, changing front wings out will most significantly affect take off speed and how much front foot pressure you need to give to hold the efoil down at high speeds. More area will cause both.

@WakeThief
@WakeThief 2 года назад
Thanks for the question, Angus! I love having to think this stuff through. Yes. I’m quite sure this is how it works but there’s one scenario where it isn’t true and that’s when you’re at really high angles of attack such that the rear wing has a small positive angle of attack and then it will lift a small amount but those high angles of attack are not ideal because drag will be the highest then too. 99% of the time its pulling downward.
