Man as time goes on I never thought I'd say it ..... but the 6.0 is actually one of Ford's better diesels especially as time goes on I'm getting more 6.7 powerstrokes in my shop with rods exiting the block... Just saying.. Good video josh.
We had a customer come in a few years ago from Alabama traveling for work. Had a 07 6 liter. Had a intermittent hard start. Found oil and way to much pressure in the degas bottle. Quoted him out for a head gasket job. He argued with price and said a local shop did the head gaskets and studs and did it without lifting the cab. Went back and forth and found they only studded the outside head bolts that were visible. Poor guy got took for 6 grand.
Just bought an 03 6.0 studded deleted. was going good but recently noticed on the highway coolant jumped up to 220 and oil temp almost at 240! what should I check.
I have an 07 ccsb 4x4 that I got for 1500 because the fan wire got caught in the fan blowing the ecm fuse. I drove the truck for 9 months in denial about the head gasket starting to leak. I just installed oringed heads and arp studs. I am into the truck for about 4 grand and absolutely love it.
Thank you for all this info. Just bought our first with 530,000 miles from a person we know kept maintenance up or we wouldn't purchase it. People told us we wasted our money, but this video really really helped!!!!!
I will be going from an F150 to a 6.0 to pull my camper. I appreciate your video, really helps with what to look for. I am planning on the regulated return and ficm right away. I need to watch some videos on replacing dummy plugs and stand pipes. How do you feel about the bullet proof diesel remote oil cooler and the air / oil cooler? It's $1900 but seems like it would remove the oil cooler problem and have a screw on oil filter.
I pull a 12,000lb 5th wheel camper w/ my 05 6.0 and have the BPD remote oil cooler. Best decision I ever made! Just towed from LA up to Portland and it was nearly 100 degrees when we hit the mountains - truck towed like a boss and all temps stayed in line. Worth the money IMO.
@Horsetorques Diesel wat even is the vortex 5000 lol. on both trucks ive had, the lower bolt mount is always broken. im assuming its to diffuse the air over the front cover and also make a barrier from the 4000rpm rotating fan assembly and the front of the engine. no joke, while driving a land rover once from colorado to oregon the fan clutch exploded and shot the aluminum disc wizzing into the abyss. the shroud deflected it leaving no damage and it wasnt till i finished the trip did i discover what had happened.
Great vid. Thank you for this. Six-O’s aren’t complicated. People just need to understand them and they’re great. My dream World consists of me owning a 6.0, a Cummins, and a Duramax someday (not sure which one). 😊
I have a 6.4 sitting at my shop now and needs a built long block .. same as a 6.0 minus the dumb fuel injection heui oil system .. did head gaskets, 2 nd time studs, injectors, rocker arms pushrods, n studs, 10 k ago n now a stinkin lifter went to crap. And I told him I don’t trust retorquing the studs down again cuz i thought 1 or 2 felt like it was pulling out of the head! Maybe if they made a 6 bolt block it b worth actually building an engine for 1 of these.. other than that put a Cummins in it n b done $10k much better spent. 💯.
If you like used ford's, and can turn a wrench. There is alot of steak on the bone. If you want a turn key diesel buy a new Yukon or Cummings. But get ready for 1800 a month for the same performance
Or you can do what i did. Show up early in the morning see it start on one crack idle it for a few minutes and never test drive it. Then hand over a pretty good sum of money and put 60k miles on it in one year only changing the oil and tires. By the way only had 118k miles and full oil system upgrade before i bought it 😂
Thanks for this video Josh, I’ve been watching this religiously! Looking to buy my first ever diesel this weekend found a 1 owner 6.0 with 107k! Hopefully buy goes well!
With 300.000 miles I use about 2.5qts of oil. It is leaking on front seal I changed it .found out it was leaking around the o ring at the turbo is that common? Thanks
Great explanation and visually described to understand for a new owner. I have a question. I am getting a 2006 Ford 350 6.0.handed down from a family member. It's been in storage for three years and from what I understand was kept in good shape for the time it was purchased and run, about 6 months. What could I have done to the truck to ensure as best as possible to make the truck reliable in not caught on the side of the road. What would you recommend to upgrade. I want to pull a 7x16 trailer across country and want the truck upgraded to eliminate some or all of the issues you mention. I am not interest in increasing the power, just reliability. Thanks Lastly, did I understand you correctly, the J pipe is better than the after market EGR?
I loved mine I had an 05 blue Harley Davidson edition completely went through the whole engine new heads head studs injectors, turbo HPOP Did the low oil pressure pump gear like you were showing in the video did the high-pressure oil pump it was just a solid truck all brand new injectors had some very good tuning from blessed performance out of Gillette Wyoming. I think he is one of the top 6.0 mechanics I’m sure you have heard of them if you’re into 6.0 PowerStrokes but killer truck man I’m still more of a Cummins guy but you can’t go wrong with a 6.0 very good engine just a very high maintenance engine
I have a buddy who has bought probably 12 6.0s in the last three years. Every single one was completely bulletproof. Thats the biggest thing in my opinion, dont dabble in 6.0s that dont already have the necessary things done. Its a real pain in the a** dealing with EGR issues and everything else.
My daily is an '04 6.0. It was all the "upgrades" including a stage 1 turbo. I run a towing tune on it for the most part. It runs great, is very comfortable, and gets decent mileage hauling and towing. I have even outpulled a 6.7 cummins up a 7% grade pulling the same weight. I know some will call bs, but i had someone in the passenger seat that can verify. I know the 6.7 was on a weight loss program, don't know about tuning...... I have had very few problems with the truck.
Thanks for putting out these videos. (I watch All ya guys ) …..and it is encouraging to see ya young bucks passing on knowledge for all. -God Bless you and yours
What a great video. Thank you so much for posting this video. Thinking about purchasing a 2005 crew cab with a long bed. Any suggestions on the better years or anything else I should know about? Thank you so much.
Are these good for towing a lawn care trailer 5 days a week? I'm upgrading from gas & older ford diesel are more affordable than dodge/gm I don't plan on financing yet.
If I had to rank them personally on reliability the 7.3 is more reliable, when I think of technology the 6.0 and 6.4 were truly first of their kinds. When I think of the cost of ownership they all cost a fortune. But for pure enthusiast stand point the 6.0 is hard to beat
Man i wish i would of had a chance to see this videos before buying mine. I went over a small bump and it just shut off and hasnt started since, i have no clue what could be wrong 😅. You gained a new follower!!
I think their name is East Texas Dodge 1 piece drive shaft 5” dia and they use all new factory ends of drive shaft. And I love it at 800 bucks but no more carrier bearing which I did to many in my 05 Dodge 3500 long bed dullay and 4 door cab and I think it was 72” long . And if you want a big aftermarket fuel tank you can not get one because that big 5” dia shaft will rub fuel tank and that sucks .
Yep just bought a 2004 f250 Crew Cab Super Duty will the 6.0 with 176,000 miles paid 8000 for it works good needs some work but the motor runs good and the trans is real good I ran it for about an hour and a half on a test drive make sure the de gas bottle wasn't leaking.
98.0 12v p-pump, how to recalibrate fuel gage? Low fuel lights up at~24 ga used . Ive put as much as 34ga in it . Theas had 2 options for tanks 27 or 37ga. Gage hits bottom of E at~27used. Just looking for it to stop telling me to look for a station with~13gs left. Not knowing the system, thinking it is a computer calibration or needing the flote rod bent for proper swing like my old Chevy needed.
Great video Josh love the 7.3 and 6.0 body style they extremely solid. I have owned 2 6.0s when they came out and got burned on them (back then next to no info on the common problems available). Own a 07 now with a 12v Cummins and because I love these body styles and the price on them really want to do another. Thank you for sharing my man 🤙🤙🤙 btw have done a couple head gasket jobs on them without lifting the cab and it's really not that bad imo
Hey bro. Loving the videos. Just bought my first 6.0. 2004 and loving it right now. Was told it has studded heads and he just redid the rear dif along with other stuff. Was hoping you can do or if you have a video link it but a video on how you maintain your truck what fluids you use and so on so forth. Thanks bro I’ll keep on watching.
I have always had a soft spot for the 6.0. First one I drove was on base in Iraq lol I had never driven a VGT truck before. That thing lit the tires up on command. I prefer the Cummins now just because of the ease of working on them, and I am now familiar with the 3rd gen. Maybe someday I will scoop one up, but people have lost their damn minds on the prices up here. No way I am paying 12-18k for a problem child Ford. Great video as always, I enjoy the variety.
Just picked up a 03 f350 6.0. Should have warched your video first. Most major components are good but the bed webbing is rotted in some spots. Needs a #5 injector most likely, maybe rear main seal, suspension seems a bit clapped out (hard to pin point issues). Feels likena wheel bearing but getting no play when jacked up. All that and that whistle still puts a smile on my face. Just gotta take it 1 problem at a time.
I’d recommend checking fuel pressure, I kept having my injectors going out one at a time and the shop I took it to kept replacing them but never checked the fuel pressure. That was the last time I took it to a shop.
i’m test driving a 6.0 and will have it for several weeks so maybe i should buy a computer to see the readings? what computer do you like? and can i just plug it in and put on the seat for temporary use?
Well... glad to see that I'm not the only one that discarded the inner shroud. What a pain in the butt. I'm going to pressure test my CAC though. Haven't done that yet. Need to change my tuning too. I want to find a nicer pickup with a 6.0 though. Mine is just an xlt. Cloth and some power
I’ve been looking for the right 6.0 to pick up would you go with a bone stock 110k-180k mile truck or a truck that is already studded around the same mileage? There is no price difference between them around me I’m not afraid of doing studs but I’m curious on how long the head gaskets usually last and if you would go with the untouched truck or studded trucks?
Dont buy one unless the motor has been replaced with a new bulletproof motor. It will fail if not bulletproof. I bought one and two weeks later motor started leaking waters from heads after pulling a rv .i paid 22,000 for new jasper built bulletproof 6.0 . I have 40,000 in it so far. New everythig under it
What if the truck sounds good, blows black, it dosent spool like urs does, and it takes maybe 2 - 3 seconds to start (warm and cold)? What might the issue be?
Great video. I had a 6.0 regret selling it. It’s still running over 200,000 miles on her. I bought an 03 at body shop getting some work done. Going to dive into it when I get her back. I’ll reach out to you when I have questions Keep up the videos glad to see you’re still out there !!!!
If you do end up fixing that power steering leak. Make a video and show us where it was. Mine has the exact same leak where it weeps but the fluid level doesn’t move. I can tell it’s power steering fluid but can’t spot the source and haven’t ever put oil in it
just cut a one foot square opening above the turbo.on the hood..put a hinge on it .open it on hot days .to let the hot air out..like air cooled aircraft engines do ..called cowling flaps...and close your new hood opening in cold air to heat the engine bay up...the location of the turbo on top of tha engine is like droping a hot rivet on ice cream...r.i.p. henry ford...and the tin lizzy..'''aloha ooai;;;
Those transmissions do have a good reputation but Ive always thought they wouldn't be that good if the 6.0 made as much torque as the cummins for this generation.
I see where you're coming from as torque on the 6.0 is neutered compared to the other powerstrokes. I will say though it's the same trans behind the 6.4.
Great video! I love it. Very descriptive and you say some things other people don’t often mention, I know do know all this myself and you did a good job. I’m gonna be buying my 3rd 6oh but excursion for the family hopefully today if it checks out 🫰
