Bro, let the person you are interviewing answer your questions.
@LegendsOfMonstera
@LegendsOfMonstera 4 года назад
Thanks for the tip. Wasn’t really supposed to be an interview though... if I just stuck to the original purpose of filming his plants, a lot of this spontaneous discussion wouldn’t have been filmed or shared. An interview format isn’t really what I had in mind nor do I want to go down that route, but I do need to figure some bugs out for sure. Cheers!

Totally love you & your channel Jimmy! But I do have to agree 😬 I was scrolling through to see if anyone else thought this too. When you asked your first question at the beginning I saw his eyes change so many times as he listened. I’m curious where his mind was going during the different talking points you went through. Ps. Keep these vids going. You have so much more authenticity and information in your videos than anything else out there. Much plant love. 🌱❤️

Thank you. The initial question initially came out of the blue and the awkward parts were edited out. Since some of the questions can be difficult or random, I sometimes try to keep talking more myself to give the other person time to digest the question. But yeah, in the next series I do interject less due to the constructive critics I’ve received with this series so far.

I love how he's teaching what is socially acceptable. I've found myself meeting new plant friends now and letting them know what spare cuttings or duplicates that I have and asking if they are interested in sharing. Unlike in my Granny's day where you go to your family member's house and hacking of "extra pieces". Not that I've done that, but I remember my mother's face as she came home to a snipped plant.

This is exactly what makes a plant rare and special in my opinion. You will always remember that plant came from Auntie Soandso. I have many perennials that come up every year that came from a work colleague who died recently of cancer--so those are very special to me.

The nice thing about plants is that in a few years, once they establish, they're pretty much an ever-giving supply for cuttings. I know that the aroid boom is NOW...but provided people can keep these rarer aroids alive, you should see the trading capabilities of collectors increase over the next few years. I have always found you get better things with a trade than you will get from cash...but you've got to have a few gems that people want. Nice vid - always like hearing you too blab about plants

Another great video! & yeah, there is a lot of etiquette involved when it comes to forming relationships with collector-sellers & ordering & establishing plants from overseas is extremely stressful😩 The plant community is a mixed bag. People can be really rude just because I said that I’m not ready to trade anything at the moment & at the same time there are people that I communicate with more than my real life friends 😅
@LegendsOfMonstera
@LegendsOfMonstera 4 года назад
I agree that etiquette is a bit lacking, but likely secondary to how fairly recent this craze is and the new influx of hobbyists. I suspect that it will get better with time, but yes, lots of under-appreciation out there.

Jimmy, no offense, but do you realize how often you interrupt Jake while he's talking...? I mean, I get your enthusiasm of wanting to add to the conversation, but it's a bit disrespectful to constantly cut someone you're interviewing off just so that you can get in your own 2 cents worth.

Another great episode! I have been following you from the first episode but this is my first comment. I’m also a doctor who has houseplants as a hobby, but start to collect more rare plants recently. I’m working in the US but originally from Thailand. It’s quite painful for me to know the price of those rare plants and where to buy in Thailand but can’t carry it here. I had bad experience with international shipping, so I’m trying to go more with US sellers at this moment. I’m still looking for the way to carry plants myself on the plane though 😆
@LegendsOfMonstera
@LegendsOfMonstera 4 года назад
Thanks so much for following along since the beginning friend!! Really appreciate it. If you want to bring plants on the plane, you just need to have a phyto certificate on hand and be prepared to maybe spend a few hours declaring and going through customs. That means you will have to plan ahead so the seller can get the phyto for you before you leave. Don’t think it takes more than 1-2 days, depending on their schedule. Might be worth it 🤷🏻‍♂️
@deehk

Plants are more available now but if your pocket is tight it’s hard to collect rare ones as prices are high these days while having money it is easier to obtain. I would invest in couple rare plants, sell cuttings to make back then trade/sell to get more in your collection. It’s slow but I do think it’s the way without breaking your bank.

Thank you for this! It is so helpful and thorough. You bring up lots of issues I have been thinking about. That is an interesting point about the expense being in relation with more availability of rare plants. I am like Jake. I like to hunt for the plants and doing research on what is a fair market price for the time. I was wondering what you felt about buying plants from overseas in regards to ethically as well as potentially hurting local businesses. I noticed that more creators are advertising for overseas sellers and it made me wonder why would anyone buy from local stores if they can get larger plants for half the price from overseas. I go back and forth. I have bought from overseas with great results but I also want to support local nurseries, sellers and plant shops.
@LegendsOfMonstera
@LegendsOfMonstera 4 года назад
I don’t have any issues with importing. I do think that a lot of people have polarizing views or experiences, either really good or really bad. I just stress that buyers be aware of their risks. Hope for the best but be prepared for the worse. If a buyer is unable to handle the worse case scenarios, they should not be importing.

Biggest key is, one you know when you buy a plant because you know you will never see one again, and 2, know when to wait for a cheaper specimen. Typically i can get rare/endangered species for 10-100$ because i wait for the perfect deal. (it is something cultivated) please do not buy something endangered unless you can confirm is was cultured.

Another awesome video Jimmie! Something else I was thinking that contributes to the cost of the plants that are imported here is the shipping. If someone wants fast shipping (around 3 days) and happy plants then the buyer may have to spend $60 - $90 to ship them here. Of course the buyer can get up to 12 plants so that does help offset the cost. If the buyer is wanting to resell then they have to factor that in, which is then passed onto the next plant buyer and up goes the price! Lol! That’s so awesome you source domestically! It would be so cool if you had tons of seeds and or tubers that you could plant here and sell as well! 🌱
@LegendsOfMonstera

Thanks for the comment Shelley! Since Jake isn’t a seller, we don’t talk too too much about the seller’s side in this series. We should in the next series 😉. And thank you, the shop works very hard to stay domestic, but it’s something I value so we’re going to keep at it. Also, foreign prices are getting higher so it’s less worth it to take that risk these days. Cheers!

The plant community seem to have root rot - disgusting. Most rare plants are not rare at all. It is just that the current demand is higher than the current supply. Given enough time, there will be an infinite supply of variegated Monstera and Syngonium. Collecting plants is not like collecting antiques, coins, stamps etc. There will be no more stamps and coins from 1921. Normally, a community is all about helping each other. This arrogant guy you are interviewing goes against community spirit: I did all the hard work, why should I help you? This artificial community you are describing is like the iPhone13 community. You have to know someone who is someone to get this super rare phone on day 1. On day 20 it is no longer rare. I am sure there is a real plant community out there, dating back to the 1950s with people sharing cuttings and information. It might not be on Instagram and RU-vid, but it exists.
