Ken Brownlee Thank you for the compliment I just remembered going to many new ones for the first time feeling a little lost. Figured maybe this would help someone out esp with all the light trucks and trailers
just got back from a quarry... everything is in motion and appears chaotic. Your information sure puts things in perspective and helps to understand how it all works.
Thanks for the great and informative video! I just bought a 26000 GVW Little Peterbilt with a 12 foot dump body and have tons of work for it. There is certainly a ninch market here for 7-8 yard loads where a pickup just won't cut it and a full size dump is overkill. This was great to know on how to be respectful and not be the idiot driving around a Quarry lost and not knowing how things work. Didn't know about the CB so definitely getting that installed. Really good to know to back in on the LEFT so I'm not cutting in line. Great Video!
Thanks man yeah i have a good market for the smaller loads. Even do big jobs. I didn’t know they had a 26k pete i was looking at the 10 tons but need a cdl. What model is yours
@@WorldsOkayestFarmer Thanks! It's a Peterbilt model 330 with a 12 foot dump body. Truck and body weigh 13500 so I can haul a little over 6 ton. My main reason for keeping under at 26000 was for NON CDL. Hauling a lot of Decorative Rock, Decorative Bark and materials that are decorative for landscapes and yards. Seem to be able to charge and make a lot more money when hauling higher quality materials. I have plenty of work to not have to fight for lower paying loads such as Top Soil. Just not worth my time considering the cost of a Peterbilt and Dump Body. I've lucked out and pretty much gotten most of my business from high end Landscapers doing large home estates and price really isn't an issue. I'm working on getting a trailer like yours and I do have many of my contractors needing tops soil and fill. Keep up the great videos!
As a scale lady..ALWAYS stop at the scale house..scale operator needs to know who is in the pit. Don't get out of your vehicle when you're in the pit, if you need something signal the loader or go back to the scale house if you don't have a radio, the big equipment operators can't see you and most of them will not have radios. And yes, check your trailers and tires before you go. I can't count how many trailer tires have blown because the tires are old and worn. If you do have a radio, don't tell your life story on it...too much important info to be said in the pit.
Easily one of the best RU-vid videos I've seen. Its good channels like this one that really helps out every day middleclass people trying to better themselves. GREAT JOB!!!
Great video! You did a great job explaining what they expect and how to pull up to the pile. Also highlighting how to back in on the passenger side of trucks ahead of you.
Great job! This is exactly what I wanted to see! This is what I'm trying to set up as my second revenue stream along with my full-time day job. Not looking to get rich, just supplement the household income. Excellent video.
Thanks for the INFORMATION video, well done . I was wonder how to go about getting gravel at my local gravel yard A big THANKS to you I know how it works now! NO one else has done anything like this that I have found .
I have a 7 X 14 dump with a 10K GVW. I usually get 3.5 ton to stay legal in PA. They watch the little pickups pulling dump trailers pretty close. I pull with Dodge Ram 2500 w Cummins 6.7 Diesel. I want to say that you covered all the bases really well and I learned a few things like parking on the passenger side of bigger tri axle dumps waiting to get loaded. Great Video indeed.
Thanks for this and for the last reminder to calibrate your trailer brakes to suit the load's higher stopping requirements (and dialing it back down again) This was helpful, thx again~
I do contract work at several quarries. I’ve seen as two scales running and trucks lined 10 deep to get weights. At most I work at now you have to tarp all loads in a designated area. A hard hat and vest are a good idea to have. Like the man said “Don’t get out of the truck on the yard”. This can get you banned at some places. It’s changed a lot in recent years. Now quarry pickups may carry flags and strobe lights. Good vid 👍
Good info there bud! It's kinda like telling someone new to boating how to prep for and what to do at a loading dock. Some people just never get it and screw everything up!
Always double and triple check that your dogs on a manual release dump gate are fully locked. If not you’ll get laughed at 😂 I was 18 or 19 the first time I hauled from a place like that and I was in a single axle dump truck, I forgot to put the ring over the dog handle and it had moved when I was driving there, releasing them, long story short the loader operator dumped about a ton in then the gate crept open and it started pouring out. I had to dump what was in there and try again. Luckily they were slow that day and we all laughed about it lol
I used to work in a gravel pit. Whenever a pickup truck came in for a load material we would use a skid steer loader to load them. I would load them until the leaf springs were straight. After that I would leave it up to the customer weather that wanted more loaded or not
Number 1 thing is never piss off the loader operators or the scale girl. The loader operators will rock your shit and the scale girl will make you wait
As a Scale Man that does 17k tons on average a day I can tell you that I don’t care who is in the yard. As long as they aren’t dumbasses, know their job info, and don’t try and small talk me, all is good. I hate my job and my mental health as been depleted having to deal with drivers and lingo 65 hours a week. If anybody is reading this and want to get a job as a scale man DON’T. You will hate it and start to hate life. Very toxic workplace. I wouldn’t wish this occupation on my worst enemy. If you want to see somebody hit rock bottom, (no pun intended), throw them in a scale house with nobody knowing what they are doing, your printers outside run out of paper, and somebody is on the phone wanting to order a measly 15 tons of rock acting like they are a big shot ordering Mount Everest. All of the sexist jokes, unfunny comments, and copious amounts of bad breath has made me despise humanity. -There is no punch line. This isn’t a joke.
I too am a scale man of a rather busy quarry, and I can vouch for every word this man has said. Never in human history has a more accurate string of words been put together. I feel as if there is finally someone else, somewhere, who understands. RIP to the scale people.
This was very helpful, thanks. I have 7 x 12 14K# trailer, getting ready to pick up a few loads of gravel. I think I’ll start with 3 tons to get an idea on how things handle. Good advice on break controller settings: 3 empty, 8 Full. Appreciate it.
@@ss454gm I’ve only done 3 ton trips thus far. I suspect 5 tons would be fine. The gravel pit is pretty close by, so I’ve opted for going lighter, more often.
@@rcote1234 yea I’m going to put a 2x12 board on mine. And start with 4 tons and see how that looks in there. I use to do 5-6 tons in a 14ft no problem but figured 5 would full a 12ft up
Quarries are regulated by Federal Government ( MSHA- Mine Safety and Health Administration ) They have strict rules the quarry has to follow; mandatory safety equipment (PPE) . Safety boots, hard hat, reflective vest when outside a truck or other equipment.
I work in rock quarries. You forgot one thing . In my earlier year our quarry had a wash screen with bins and I was pulling them with a haul truck . I had 2:30 before my bin was full . Stay or get the fuck out of my way . I am fly threw the plant
I just found your channel all tips and information would be very helpful do you need a special permit to get in there with a 7 by 14 dump trailer ??good luck
Love the Douche nozzle on back. Looks like some shit my kid would have 😆 BTW from someone who works a scale house this is a very good video for people to watch. During road work season (as a Canadian we only have construction season and winter) it can be very frustrating when you got a guy in a little truck bobbing around back there and ya know he means we'll but he just doesn't know the rules. Only thing I would add is you should have a radio but stay off it unless you are very familiar with the place you can cause "traffic jams" there too and most loader operators don't want a chatty Cathy in the pit.
We have a mounted C/B or handheld. I put the cat stack on in my early twenties. It was a little embarrassing once I was doing business with it. Not my fault the old 6.0 lasted so long.
I have a small bed pickup and need gravel for a driveway, it's from a nursery that loads same as your video, any tips on protecting the bed? I was thinking a tarp?
Lol i got yelled at by the loader operator over what another company driver not reading sings. Then the lady in the scale house told him it was the other driver not me, and now they stop on the scales and read the sings.
You must have found a closer quarry that wasn't East Fairfield or Allied. How's the new truck coming along? Like Jeff Raymond says you'll be a BTO. Lol
Good for you to advise the little things that make a big difference. Air up tires try not to shoot the dogs or talk shit to the quarry unless your on chanele 3
@@WorldsOkayestFarmer thanks man I was afraid I just ordered 10 yds and saw a video on you tube and it looked more like 20yds but your video seems legit accurate with the yds !
