As someone who has worked underground, I recognize what this truck was used for immediately... This would have been the powder rig. Commonly called a "powder monkey." As a blaster, this is what we used to load shots underground, to advance the mine... I've never seen one mounted on a Euc like this, ours was on an old Gettman... But I'm 99% sure that's what this was used for. That air tank on the side was likely used for the pneumatic loading of ANFO.

As a 10yo boy in Westport NZ, in 1950, our house was nearby the NZ Govt. Public Works Department workshops. Often times on the weekends there were Euclid and Dart dump trucks parked opposite the shops awaiting maintenance. My siblings and friends and i would go and sit in the cabs of these monsters where our imaginations would run wild. Personally i preferred playing in the Darts which had a much nicer dash layout than the Euclid. These vehicles were used at the opencast coal mines at Millerton and Stockton for hauling coal. Bob. Afternoon Matt!! VERY COOL!! I've always had a soft spot for these vintage trucks, growing up in Michigan, in a town that once was considered the gravel capital of the world (encyclopedia Britannica), as a kid I loved going through the gravel pit junk yards, these vintage Euclids we're part of those junkyards, I remember one sand/gravel pit used vintage WC2264 Whites used as pit trucks, the coolest dump truck I found was a 1930's Bull Dog Mack which was sunk up to the Axles in the mud...most of the pits are gone, new subdivisions we're built in there place.

Great video Matt. I love any machine as long ass it's old. As a young kid in the early 50's I'd stop by Delta Crop Dusting service in Monroe, Louisiana on my way home from school. They were the precursors of Delta Airlines. They built their own aircraft for crop dusting and it was like watching a big model kit being put together. I was no trouble so they would sit me on a stool, give me a 5 cent Coke and let me watch. They would answer any questions I had if it wasn't too many. I got my love of airplanes and flying then. Still today, I think REAL airplanes have two wings and round propeller engines. El Mirage, Arizona

743 Cummins are great engines. There's a 4 cylinder version of the same engine in the grader sitting outside my house right now, a 495. Love the sound. Side note, it uses 2 D batteries to start lol. Takes a lot of current.

Being a old H series is very possible that it’s still a 672cid. They have a smaller bore, 1/8” smaller if I remember correctly it wasn’t until later years they upped the bore size by boring out the cylinder larger. The cylinder liners are interchangeable the only difference was the older ones had a very thick liner with a notch cut out at the of the liner for the valves to clear.

When I worked at Cummins in Toronto in the early 70’s it wasn’t too often you came across a 4 cylinder one. One thing I did notice is the ones built under license by Komatsu in Japan the inside of the crank cases where painted Cummins Golden Rod yellow, the block casting had a smoother look than the ones that came from Shotts Scotland. I was told back then that the blocks where “ cured “ for a year before they machined them. Most of the engines of this age came from mines, sawmills, power plants, and tugboats pulling log booms up in Northern Ontario. It wasn’t uncommon to see blocks with casting dates going back to the 40’s. Lots of memories of making up new lube hoses, as these engines didn’t have a lot of connected drilled oil galleries. Accessories had to be supplied by oil hoses. My old NTC Big Cam 2 from 82 had a “ signal line “ that came of the lube pump and plumbed into the camshaft gallery. There’s nothing like the sound of a naturally aspirated NH 250 with a Jake rolling down hill into town. 😊
