Dacob, you are a man after my own heart. Yes, perfumes tell stories, they are like old friends, warm and cozies, they carry the old loves and pains, and tears, and find memories, as well as the new joys. Keep on the good work. Hugs.

Dacob, Thank you! This is exactly the video I needed to see. Chanel is such a high quality house. I own many niche fragrances, but my husband always says, "Just throw out all your niche fragrances, and just keep your Chanels." I have a perfume rule-never declutter your Chanels, EVER! What does that say about this house? They are special! Quality over quantity is my new mantra. Less is more! You're the best Dacob. 🥰

I buy only those I fell in love with after checking them on my skin, using samples. It could take months on end before I'll make a decision to buy some perfume. I need to be selective as perfumes are expensive. And I never blind - buy anymore. I made that mistake once and I learned my lesson. ;-)

Many years ago I shared a flight with a Belgian musician. Our conversation was about the spacing within music comparing to a color wheel and fragrances. Every once in a while lirr,e buts of that conversation pop up when I hear a piece of music, smell a fragrance or analyze a makeup palette. All are arts

Hi Linda ! It’s a process and a delicate balance between personality and taste ! It took me at least 2 decades to realize what exactly suits me ! Good luck and hope you find what works for you ❤ also remember that tastes evolve through the years, my advice is not to rush into buying a fragrance or too many in a short period of time! Let it marinate for some time .

I did the exact thing, and I,’m right there with you - and eviane is spot on too - mistakes will be made… but taking it slow will hurt less … my entire nose has changed since I started a little over a year ago… well I guess I started dabbling maybe 3 years ago - but I made some mistakes about a year ago and got too wrapped up … I force myself now to at least get samples , even if it’s on 3rd market site and maybe seems too much for so little - I think of sampling as “an experience” to enjoy in and of itself - and I plan to get my favorite samples lined up and maybe do another sample to make sure - but after getting a few bottles I do like, I’m not chomping at the bit either

I'll admit that in my collection of 150 bottles of perfume, Chanel, Guerlain and Dior are over-represented because these houses speak to my aesthetic. I am very much "vieille France" when it comes to my tastes. I loved this video Dacob and this is why I've basically stopped watching other perfume review RU-vid channels. They are about consumerism, not about perfume appreciation. Gents Scents comes to mind with his "50 MUST OWN Fragrances For Beginners To Build An AMAZING Collection". That's crazy. Your method is sustainable and won't lead your viewers down the perfumed garden path. Thanks Dacob.

Hey, yesterday I had a conversation with a fragrance influencer that lives in the south of France, and she was telling me how lucky I am to be in Paris, because niches' stores are everywhere. I must admit that I always walk out with empty hands from these places, even if I'm obsessed with perfumes. Of course we're not in the 80's anymore when everyone had one signature scent, but, who needs 3000 bottles??? To me, the right balance is to have a few mainstream things accessible for good deals, and a few niches, or exclusives, to use for special occasions. New releases are rarely super original, LVMH and L'Oréal ow most companies, so, there are many many dupes out there...😅 Love you ❤❤❤❤❤

I own so many fragrances from my time as a fragrance department manager and working for different beauty lines. I have been a huge fan of Guerlain since I was about 14 or 15. My mom got me a set of miniatures that had Shalimar, Chamade, Mitsouko and I think L'Heure Bleu. My first love was Chanel No 5 and that's my go to. I can just catch whiff of a scent while I'm out and it will put me in the mind of a specific fragrance, and I will bring it out and wear it. I sometimes wish I only had a few to wear. It's overwhelming. I give as much thought to the fragrance I am wearing to work the next day, as I do to the outfit I will be wearing. This was a great video and a very good way to think about how to buy a fragrance!!

I have a collection upwards of 200 Fragrance’s with a focus on vintage 60’s thought the 80s. I collect mostly for the preservation and nostalgic cataloging. I’m really really intrigued and sorta obsessed with CHANEL no5. Speaking of which I would love to have Dacobs input on a few bottles I have. For placing them in a time frame etc.

This video is not limited in its message just because of my personal examples of perfumes purchased by me in the past year.

Great video, thank you. I currently have 44 Perfumes and that's more than enough. Some of them I don't really wear, they are part of my personal olfactive museum of memories. Most are my own memories, two are collective (Mitsouko and l'heure attendue, created for the end of WWI and WWII respectively. As European, they mean a lot to me). If you have hundreds of bottles and wear a different fragrance every day, you won't ever connect one with a particular time of your life or ever really get to know it. It's a just waste in all regards.

I thought I was a perfume junky but I have only around 60 bottles. I love old perfumes as I have found out that new releases usually disappoint me. I love Guerlain the most as their perfumes do not change as much with time. Second brand is Chanel which I adore as well. I have also small number of niche perfumes but I try to buy them in duty free area or search on line as they are much cheaper.

Dear Dacob, I have been collecting Chanel perfumes, vintage main stream perfumes and some niche ones but just like you, I keep revisiting them over and over again. Secondly, I realised that we could go over multiple perfumes every month but most of them are somehow similar and for me personally, it is very difficult to find one that stands out to me, We are constantly bombarded by new releases and just like in fashion, there's some olfactory family or an ingredient that the companies emphasise and begin releasing around the same time. Thank you for another lovely video. Xoxo, Anna

Thank you Anna! 💖 Yes its a trend driven business in many ways, just like fashion and if one is not careful enough, one can easily get lost in the chaos and sounds coming from all the brands releasing new products. Just because there are so many new products coming out all the time, does not by a long shot mean that said products are any good. 💖💖🌅🌅🌅

I love this video - it’s very measured and helped me a lot with the fomo - what also helps for me, I did start just buying samples - so I get to try and I get that hit if newness, but without the full money commitment - it still takes money to get samples, but I found it actually takes a while for me to understand a scent, so after getting 10 - 15 or so samples, I’m pretty filled up for maybe 8 months of testing and newness feeling

Love this topic and yess I remember the smelly gal ha !! 💕 I swear you’re reading my mind! I was always a less than ten different types of perfumes then during candy cane I found perfume RU-vid! Ehh and discovered new ones…BUT… I don’t want to have hundreds 😅 i want to have maybe 20 favs! So I kinda have my own “checklist” to keep myself in check! Same with the anxiety! 😬 hate it!! These people have the money to buy a new perfume due to pr and the money they make from US! 😖 I stopped watching the over consumption! I have you..and a couple of mature ladies I watch. You are genuine! Thank gosh. And also so poetic…it’s not about buy buy buy with you! In my journey the past few years of stepping out of my box and buying more than I would? I discovered I ALWAYS reach for my classics! Ha which calmed my anxiety down significantly! I have 5 signatures ( that cover seasons/my categories) that I buy yearly. I allow myself 3 new releases per year in travel size only! if it’s a love I will buy full bottle, but it’s usually not ha ! Ahh 😌 thx for bringing common sense back to perfumes and sharing how you break yours down ! 💕

Very interesting way of explaining a relationship between one and their chosen scents. Before i clicked this video I bought two perfumes and upon spraying them on me i immediately began to feel saddness, death and a far off memory trying to be resurrected. It troubled me for a bit. Then i clicked this video. Im going to sit with it and try and understand and get to know them, but since smell is tied to memory im afraid these scents will just always make me sad. I went on a very long journey today. Now i know I just need to plan better and do more research first.

I could spend hours listening to your reviews. (loved the shout out to K.P. clicking on her led to you!). I was very lucky growing up that.My father's friend had a duty free store.Therefore, I was able to sample pretty much every perfume of note released from the 1960's. Both of my parents adored fragrances. I have a large collection but nothing that would fill a wall. I also have bottles with just a few sprays left as memories. My other favorite way ( before the candy cane) to experience a new fragrance was to smell it someone else or a strip in a magazine (the death of print sucks). I would then head to the store for a tester or buying from the web. I will not buy a bottle before living with the scent. I was very hesitant to give up my tip for getting classic fragrances, dirt cheap. But you have shared so much that it is only fair.... Estate Sales. Most of the time they are in purses, tote bags, dressing tables or worst-case the bathroom. My aunt , who lives in Florida , has very pointy elbows and is willing to share the spoils with me. The greatest score was an unopened bottle of Fougere Royal by Houbigant from the early 20th century. The problem is on eBay. Some of what should be cheap are now going for crazy prices. If you see a 3.4 oz bottle of Un Air de Java by Orlane for under $150. Ditto for Tailoring by Clinique... Holler at me!🤗 Once again thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge and way with words.❤😊👍

Thank you for sharing your tip with us. 🥰 I love the concept of sustainability when buying from Estate sales but they make me so sad… its like the end of somebody’s life and it also makes me think about my life once it ends and how people would probably do the same to my things I collected throughout my life. It all just makes me very gloomy.

Thank you Tee 🙏🏻💖 Yes, restraint when it comes to new perfume purchases is a good thing in my book because the more time I still spend with the perfumes I already own and the more opportunities I will have for them to tell me more about themselves. When I buy a new perfume, the one I got prior fades a bit into the background so the question is, how soon do I want it to fade into the background? My answer to myself is: I want it to stay in the forefront for as long as possible because if I love it so much then I want it to be with me as close as possible for as long as possible. 💖💖💖🌅🌅🌅

Hello Dacob, thank you for sharing your process in buying a perfume. I was into perfumes a while back but got overwhelmed by the amount of perfumes out there and not knowing how to choose or rather what to look out for. This is great, watching your videos have reignited my love of perfumes. And I love to get to know the nitty gritty about perfumerie. I don't want to see just another video of new releases, I want to know what makes a perfumes tick. I will look out for your older video for beginners. I will give you an example, when I first started to watch your perfume channel, i thought I might get Shalimar and Mitsouko.For the first time I was not so in love with Shalimar, but I did LOVE Mitsouko. After a while, I tried Shalimar again, and then suddenly I understood it abit more and could see the depth of this perfume. To me Shalimar has an old world charm to it, and rather sad in some ways. Where as Mitsouko was a very happy , positive perfume for me. Anyway, I might be ranting, Thank you again.

Shalimar millesime iris is such a beauty ! I’ve decided it was my signature and purchased 5 bottles lol

Wow! Five bottles! 😳😳😳 I LOVE that! To be honest, I was looking for more bottles of it as well but they were all sold out by the time I got to it. I still managed to get two bottles of millesime iris, which I am savoring and using sparingly because it is that beautiful to me. Here is my review video of Shalimar Millesime d’Iris: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3SejJdYcgiI.htmlsi=dSKwFg99z3q5oZYf

Its kind of like with makeup… new color palettes come out so often and we fall for the fomo so often and end up buying way too many but we do not use them all and waste a lot of money in the process in my opinion. Similar with perfumes if we fall for the fomo each time a new one is released.

Yes 👍🏼 it’s kinda similar my way, always the good stuff that I love and re buy, the oldies goodie’s for a great price like Halloween, Eternity, CKOne, Happy, Organza, etc, etc and the new good release. Then the cheap stuff for daily day or going to the beach, I don’t like to not wear perfume or similar when I walk out from home. Maybe a Brume or eau de toilette.

People also forget perfume lasts a really long time. And say you have 6 fragrences and wear them 5 days a week for work and 1 weekend fragrences... The average person sprays say 3 sprays at a time... Each perfume should last 6 months to a year easy even if 1.7 oz (I always buy the biggest size, a 3.4 oz sprayed everyday will last me a year)
@shirleycantoni3152
@shirleycantoni3152 2 месяца назад
There are no rules. I spray at least 5-6 sprays of perfume each time and I use my perfume 4 times a day on my skin.

A new fragrance review from you is an event, Dacob. I bought one new fragrance last year which was Habit Rouge Rouge Privee, and I just backed up on Bois des Iles extrait when I found out from you it was a goner, RIP.

Thank you Knoxy for your kind words 🙏🏻🥰💖 I am still hopeful though that Chanel maybe surprises us one day with the reintroduction of the les exclusifs extraits but in a new format like for example the spray format maybe… I would love that.

That would be amazing! I think the splash bottles did put a lot of people off the extraits who would have otherwise bought them.

I think Katie Puckrik ignited my current curiosity for fragrance - and you haven't helped! - I didn't even know Chanel had a collection of exclusifs until you talked about them....then I purchased the discovery box and my fate was sealed. I don't have a list but in the case of the exclusifs ranked them in order of interest......

I really enjoyed this video Dacob! ❤. Good, strong advice. I have quite a similar approach ( and taste) with perfume buying and/or collecting. I have just bought 2 this year ( plus the ltd ed n°5 Xmas body oil- so dreamy). I have my beloved favs too, N°5 is my most used, but I think Comete will be a strong contender. I also love Allure Sensuelle EDT and Coco EDP ( as we are in the cold months here). Have travelled a lot this year, so just take N°5 and a bunch of Chanel samples 🎉 . I love my Guerlains too, but have no backs ups, so use sparingly. I have the original Vintage Samsara in the beautiful red bottle- (divine- used very sparingly! ) I did pass on my apres l'ondee, but I kinda regret it 😢... thanks again, I love rambling on in comments about Chanel perfumes, with a touch of Guerlain!!🎉❤❤❤ ❤❤❤❤

Thank you Patrice 🥰🥰🥰🙏🏻💖💖💖 I am super curious to know how Comete performs in autumn and winter! Since I only just got it in April, I will have to wait a few months for it to finally be colder over here so that I can sense it in colder months but you got a head start in Australia. How is it performing in the cold?
@smithpatricemary
@smithpatricemary 2 месяца назад
Well, for me, I find it performs well. At the moment (where I am in OZ), is VERY cold, so I only apply one spray on wrist, and a few sprays on my clothes, coat and the back of my scalf. It really lingers all day, and have had the occassional person say "you smell beautiful!". It stays on my wrist until evening. Maybe because of the Aldehydes and rich notes, I think it suits the Autumn and winter well. One thing I do notice, is that on my clothes, a definite strong Cherry note comes out ( I know there is cherry blossom there), but on my clothes it omits a "cooked" cherry scent ( if that makes any sense?), which really suits the cooler weather, I think anyway. 😊❤
