I bought my skates 41 years ago, then moved to Hawaii. Although we did finally get a rink, I was stuck in the workplace. Now that I am retired, I will try them out and see if I can once again enjoy the sport. ⛸ ⛸ 🥰

I wish I had a video reference like this back when I was first shopping for skates. For the first few months I just grabbed the cheapest skates I could find from the local sporting goods store. They had zero support whatsoever, but I guess it was a good option just to test the waters before fully committing. About 3-4 months in I knew I wanted to go further with skating but I knew nothing about buying skates. I feel incredibly lucky that I had a good skate tech in my area who respected my budget and needs. I had no clue how any of it worked and he could have totally tried to over sell me but he didn’t and I’m so thankful good people like him exist. I essentially asked for a skate that was adult beginner friendly but was something I could still grow into, and I was fitted in a Jackson freestyle. They’ve served me quite well so far, and it’s been a year since I bought them. I try to take decent care of them and I only see minimal boot breakdown. Now I’m not doing anything crazy, the only solid jump I have is a waltz and I’m working on pre-bronze MITF, but so far they’ve been great 😊

Thanks for the tutorial. RU-vid must have read my mind and know that I need a new pair of skates soon hahaha! I currently am wearing Jackson Artiste and it has lasted three years(since late 2018, but I didn't actively skate during 2020-2021). Now that I'm learning single jumps and start to understand bending more at my ankles and knees before launching into air, so the boots are probably gonna last less than 6 months if I skate regularly. I bought my boots at a very trustworthy shop and they were heat molded to my feet and it wasn't very painful to break into them.

Finally someone mentions the Jackson Evo! It seems like everyone on RU-vid only talks about the Artiste except for the Jackson Ultima RU-vid channel. I'm a beginner skater going through Basic 1 wearing the Evo because it was the 1st skate available that could comfortably fit my wide feet. Though, while I'm at my rink, I notice that everyone who can skate far better than me wear Evos while those in my class wear the Artiste or Finesse. I wonder if the ones in my class have an easier time skating than me since their boots have more ankle support than mine?

Skates are a very personal decision and, as you know, everyone is different! Don't think that the Artiste has more ankle support though - the support rating for the EVO and Artiste are exactly the same! The EVO has more advanced features. The Finesse is considered a "lifestyle" skate and is intended for recreational use. While the adult version of the Finesse has medium support, my experience with skaters wearing them is that the vinyl upper makes it more challenging for many to bend.

So amazing today❤. I had harlick( full leather)back in 1999. 5'11 160lbs female. I was strong. It was a heavy boot. Now i love all.the synthetics. Boots are so light. I definitely love Jackson boots

I’m an adult and I weigh 44kg (97 pounds) 🤡 I’m 162 (5’3). I have edea overtures and they fit perfectly, and even when I’ll jump doubles I plan to keep them because stiffer boots would be too hard for me to break in.

If Overtures are working for you, great! Everyone is different! Just keep in mind that Edea boots don't really break-in as the bend comes entirely from the tongue. Make sure that you change your laces regularly - each time you get your blades sharpened to help keep the support consistent. If the sides bend or get a crease it means the boots have broken down and need to be replaced.

I have a pair of Klingbeil SA 3 with phantom special blades. I hadn’t skated in decades and needed a new pair of skates. There was a brand new (sat in the closet for years) pair of boots on eBay and the minimum bid was $66.00 and nobody bid on them. I got them for $66.49. I had always worn SPteri skates, but my old pair never really worked for me, so I decided to buy the Klingbeil boots. If they didn’t fit me, some child (size 4) was going to get a free pair of really nice skates. They fit me like they were made for me and were comfortable from the first time I wore them. I used to use Olympiad blades, but had to switch to phantoms when they stopped making Olympiads and decided to stay with the phantoms for this pair. I love these skates.

Hi! Thank you for your super helpful video! I’m a 5’8 79kg female finishing off my singles but looking to start doubles this year. I’ve just been to a skate tech and they recommended getting edea pianos but I’m hesitant as in my mind they are for a much more advanced skater (I know you’re not meant to be able to overbook in Edeas but even so). Just wondering if this seems right to you?

It’s not wrong! I wore Pianos for singles at 145 lbs. that said, I find Ice Flys more comfortable. These days I wear Concertos for coaching and they are very comfortable.

hi love the video! i currently have the riedell diamonds with the capri blades, bought the set from my rink's pro shop, i have pretty narrow feet so they recommended riedell for me. i've been skating for quite a while but still don't really know when i should upgrade. i've had these for about a year, i'm 17yrs old, 114lbs and 5'2. i'm currently in the isi freestyle 2 level, so working on things like half lutz and one foot spins. do you think i would need to upgrade anytime soon or would the diamonds last me for a little while longer?

I would look into upgrading. Please discuss with your group lesson coach and/or skating director and ask them where you should go for a fitting. The rink pro shop may not be the best place.

thank you so much i wanted to start figure skating and will start group lessons in two weeks I thought about buying new skates for that (currently I only have old hockey skates I got when I was 11, I’m 18 they still ‘fit’ but only so much that they are more comfortable then skates you can borrow at a ring) but now I think I should wait till I start lessons and ask the group coach then, do you think thats better?

It’s always best to ask your instructor or the skating director where to go for a fitting before you buy skates.

Hi Aimee! Your videos are my favorite to take notes of and watch, thank you! I unfortunately don’t have a good fitter remotely close to me - I’m stuck deciding between Jackson Elle or Freestyle. I don’t want to “over boot” and stunt my growth with the freestyle but i also don’t want to break down the Elle too fast but have heard they can be more comfy and easier to learn in. I’m 5’2” 150lbs with an athletic build. What do you think? Or go with Edea Concerto?

If you don't have a fitter anywhere near you, how will you have them heat molded and shaped? I can't give you a recommendation without knowing more about your age, skill level, and foot size and shape. @ super beginner, still learning how to one foot glide and two foot spin but plan to spend atleast 1-3 hours on ice per week to learn. My foot is pretty wide so I’m learning edea lasts are pretty narrow to start off with so Jackson just may be a better place to start overall. It’s just elle bs freestyle is where I’m stuck

This is a really good example of why it is so essential to get fitted by a professional. I know that you said you that you don't have any speciality skate shops near you, but all the boots you mentioned perform best when they are heat molded/shaped. With Jackson if you do not get them heat molded, they will feel very stiff as they are designed to be heat molded. As far as Edea goes, there are a lot of misconceptions. As far as I can tell, many of those misconceptions have risen from skaters not getting fitted and ordering online. Edea boots are completely customizable! That means that a fitting for Edea is just as much for the shaping as it is for determining the correct size (length and width) and making adjustments. Edea skates are dual last. So, the standard C width is C in the ball and B width in the heel. There is also a D-width available, which is a D-width in the ball and a C-width in the heel. You can also get an E-width by special order, which is an E-width ball and D-width heel. Edea boots are fit based on the heel (not the ball) so that the heel pocket remains unchanged. The ball of the foot can then be adjusted to whatever width is most appropriate for the skater. So, you could have a B heel with an E in the ball of the foot after custom shaping, for example. Once the ball and the heel are the fitted correctly, a tech can make other adjustments to the achilles, navicular and ankle bones, toe box (squaring and lifting), as well as for specific things such as a bunion or toe. Unfortunately, all this means that even with the details you have provided, I still cannot provide you with a specific boot recommendation for you to order without being fitted. Hi Aimee, thank you so much for all the skating videos and thorough answers to others’ questions! It’s encouraged me to sign up for classes at my local rink! My question after this video is: As a beginner (age 27, 5’2 and 105lb) if I were to opt for Jackson freestyle, will this skate last me until the days (maybe in one or more years) when ai finally start to learn more fancy moves, or will it likely break down due to creases before those days? Wondering if I should go for the mystique/ artiste or invest in a good pair given that the skate will last. Thank you so much as always!

How long a skate will last depends on your body composition, skating style, how you care for them, and how often you skate. You can only get so many sharpenings out of a blade, so no skate will last forever! You shouldn't count on any skate lasting the average skater longer than 2, maybe 3 years. Of course, if you skate often or are harder on your skates, it will be sooner. If you don't skate frequently and keep them stored properly, it could be longer. I wouldn't suggest a Jackson Freestyle for a beginning adult of your height and weight unless you are really strong in your ankles and knees. I encourage you to get suggestions from your coach and skate tech. Most importantly, get fitted!

Hi, I am beginner skater who is fifteen and is in the NJ area and I went to my pro shop I was wondering if Jackson soft tec is good for a beginner because I went and got fitted they gave me these but I am only in basic 1.Are they a good choice or should I get something else. Once I get to basic four or start at the freestyle levels I think of getting better skates so for now are these good? Thank you!

They may be ok to get you started. But, you will likely need a more advanced model as you advance. It's best to ask your group lesson instructor or skating director what their thoughts are.

Thank you for this video! I started skating last year and got the Jackson Mystique, the cheapest but also not like rentals that I could find out there. Didn’t get them fitted or anything just got them online. They served me fairly well til now but as I’m starting to work on all my singles and developing my spins I feel that they’re not supportive for me anymore. I looked into the Edea Overture, maybe I could switch to those? Or are those also too “beginner” at this point? I’m just so scared of over-booting. I really want to get some Edeas but I’m still not sure how to go about it!

It honestly depends on so many things! However, you cannot overboot in Edea! Ask your coach (or the rink's skating director) for a recommendation on where to go to get fitted.

@ I was watching your video again and saw my comment! I ended up going to a pro-shop and getting fitted for Edea Chorus + MK Coronation Ace blades and I LOVE THEM! My skating has improved so much, from day 1 I felt like the skates alone gave me skills I didn't even know I was able to do!! Also when he fitted me for the boots he told me that I should actually be wearing a 34 EU (230) instead of a 36 EU (240), which is what I wore in Jackson. oops... I guess that's why my feet moved around my boots when I skated! lol

I’m in a Jackson 200 and I’m basic 3 now! the skate shop told me I should be fine as long as I haven’t started any kind of jumps , but I am totally guilty of buying the cheapest skate because I was starting at zero skill level -I’m wondering what boot to get after this and at what level!

It honestly depends on your age, height, weight, how often you skate and so much more! It's best to discuss with your coach. Generally, I would suggest Mystique, Artiste, Evo, etc.

Hi Aimee, could you elaborate on what you mean by having your blades offset from the center? I tend to pronate on one foot and it is giving me a hard time with deep outside edges. Do you think I might benefit from having my blade repositioned? Do you see any possible cons for such adjustment?

That’s exactly what mean. You can have your blades repositioned to help prevent pronation. This is very common and there’s no real con to having your skate tech make that adjustment. It is developed by a continuous rise and fall of the skating knee together with the pressure of the edge of the blade against the ice. The skater should demonstrate the ability to exert equal pressure against the surface of the ice on both the right and left foot. End products of power are velocity, speed or pace; flow across the ice; and (3) acceleration." Once you have the right equipment for your age, size, foot shape, and skill level, it's best to work with your coach to develop more power in your skating. Hey! I’m a teenager and I’ve been skating for sometime now, also I’m not heavy. The skates I currently have are budget skates (don’t even know the brand lol) which have absolutely no support so I need an upgrade for improvement. I can do waltz jump and single toe loop (tho they need more work). I went to measure my feet yesterday and fitted some different skates. I tried edea overture and risport RF1s boots and they were quite good as they felt tight and were stiff. Then I tried the Jackson Elle fusion and they felt really good. The fitters also recommended them for me and they reserved them for me but I want to think about them before I buy. It says that their performance is single jumps so I asked the fitter about that and he said that even if it says that the performance is single jumps I’d still be able to do double jumps too. What do you think? I want to buy something that’ll last me long and quite advanced so I don’t have to buy new ones anytime soon. And the Jackson Elle fusion are already quite pricey so idk if I should for example higher the price a bit more for maybe Edea Chorus which are double jumps and might last me longer, tho they’re cost a lot more since I also have to buy for them blades too. I rlly don’t know what to do.

In my experience, the Edea Chorus is not appropriate for adult size people doing doubles, but it depends! You honestly should not expect any skate to last you for more than a year if you are skating regularly. So, don't overboot to avoid having to upgrade in a year. It's best to get what your coach and professional tech are appropriate for where you are now and into the next year. Then, revaluate a year from now and upgrade appropriately.

@ ohh okay I see, I’m gonna ask my coach when I have training! The professional techs recommended the Jackson Elle fusion for me. Do you think that the Jackson Elle fusion will last me a year even if I start doing double jumps? Or will they start breaking down and last less than a year? I’m not an adult and I’m not tall nor weigh a lot.

Hi! Recently I bought a second hand pair of skates of the old Jackson Competitor 2200. (My father bought them as a present with not much knowledge on skates) I had a look around on the internet and couldn’t find much on the skates. I’m a beginner skater and was wondering if you know the skates and any information about them? I’m debating whether buying a new pair of mystiques would be more beneficial than a pair of second hand skates I do not know much about. Thanks!

It's difficult to tell how well a used skate has been cared for and how much use they have received. The best thing to do is to take them to a knowledge professional skate tech. They can make sure that they fit you correctly and evaluate them for wear. For an adult size person, beginning lessons I usually suggest that with Jackson to look to go with the Artiste, EVO, Elle, or Freestyle. However, a good skate tech can give you a better recommendation based on your age, ability. height, weight, and foot shape. So, ask your coach or skating director where you can go for a fitting and have your skates evaluated.

Some even did think I needed to change my skates and others didn't... I currently skate in Risport Antares (stiffness 35) with Mark IV blades, that I bought already used. They seemed really broken. Regarding my level, I am learning single jumps, but I still need to work on some of them. But I also competing in ice dance (pre bronze) and I would prefer low heel to point my toes. Ice dance coaches talked about edea ouverture or flamenco ice (but I doubted they can do jumps), while artistic coach advised edea chorus. And a skate tech from a shop online advised Risport Electra. Finally, I really don't know what to choose... I am really confused. I am 25 years old, 167cm in height and 65kg (143lbs).

Have you considered Edea Showgirl skates? They are designed as a hybrid between dance and freestyle. You could also consider skates designed for synchro, as they are also a hybrid between dance and freestyle. Also, just because a skate may be low-cut doesn’t mean you can’t jump in it! Jason Brown wears low-cut Jackson boots - however, I’m unsure which model.

It seems hard to find them in Europe... I joined Risport France and they adressed me to a shop. The lady advised me Royal Pro, because she said that it was lower than previous model. Would it be overbooting ?

You would have to order Edea Showgirls from a shop in the US as they are not sold in Europe. However, they are very similar to Flamenco Ice - honestly, the big difference is the color! The Concerto is close with a slightly higher back. So, I feel that you could be happy with Edea Concerto. Risport is different than Edea as the ankle will not bend quite as easily, so it is possible that you could be over-booting in the Royal Pro. I recommend that you try on the Edea Flamenco Ice, Concerto, and Royal Pro and see how they feel.

Jackson EVO are heat moldable. They are a light support that is appropriate for beginners in learn to skate group lessons. For skaters that are 40 lbs are under they are recommended for up to LTS Free Skate 6. For skaters 40-80 lbs, they are recommend up to LTS Free Skate 1. For skaters that are more than 80 lbs they are recommended only up to LTS Basic 6. It's always best to check with your coach and professional skate technician for more personalized information.

You're welcome! As I explained in the video, the very best thing you could do is to ask your coach, the rink skating director, and other skaters where they go! That is honestly the best way to find a great local shop. Alternatively, Jackson Ultima has a dealer finder on their website here: jacksonskate.com/apps/store-locator however, it does include all authorized retailers like sporting good stores that sell Jackson skates - those may not be the best places to go. So, it's best to ask someone in your area where they go and what their experience has been!

What if I'm thinking about doing some group lessons (I've heard rental skates are awful) and don't have a coach to ask about buying skates? (I'm trying to consider whether I want to do both group and private lessons but I'm trying group lessons first to see if I really really want to)

It makes sense to start with group lessons! Most skaters begin their journey that way. Every rink has someone in charge of its Learn to Skate program - this is typically the skating director, but sometimes they have a different title. Whether you do group lessons or decide to begin with private lessons, the skating director is your first point of contact. Tell them that you want to purchase skates and ask them where the best place to go is to get fitted!

hello aimee! i’m 14 years old, 110 lbs and i need a little more support in my left ankle than my right foot due to a surger i had. i currently have the jackson elle skates but i feel like i need to upgrade my skates with more support, i wanted to try edea’s but am not sure which ones to get. can you give me a suggestion for an edea model?

Edea skates may feel looser around your ankle but you will still have support. It's just something you'll have to adjust to! I would suggest that you try on the Edea Chorus, Concerto, and Ice Fly to see how they feel. Make sure you go to an Edea authorized dealer and they can better advise you and custom shape them for your specific needs.

Everyone is different. I know many synchro skaters who each wear something different. Ultimately, you want the best boot for you and your skating. Discuss it with your coaches and skate tech. They are in the best position to offer you suggestions.

Hello. Thank you, for posting ver-detailed videos. So, I have an opportunity to buy a pair of Edea Classica Boots for 🛼. I skated a few hours in them and towards the end of the session, I was experiencing a dull-pain in the ball of my smaller foot. I didn’t buy the boot because of the above reason. FYI, I do recall lacing them tight around my instep because of the bulky-look of the Classica boot. So, after watching this video , the idea came to me, I need an expert to check the fit of the boots. The length is fine and I am thinking the “C” width boot is too wide-for my 7-inch foot. Shopping for the perfect fit, with a stock boot is an exhausting & a daunting journey.🧐😵‍💫

The best thing to do is to ask a coach or the rink's skating director where the best place to go is for a fitting. If she is working with a private or group lesson coach they can better advise her. It is definitely reasonable to spend much less than $300 USD!

The back of my new boot is so firm it cuts into the back of my leg at the top of the boot when I stand with my knees locked and is extremely painful. Is this normal? When I bend my knees it’s fine. I’m a chonk tho so thinking I’m just fat 🤣

Hello! I am a female (20), i weight around 100 pounds and am 157, I think 5,1ft. I have been skating on Edda chorus and the brand just didn’t work for me, I am getting risport RF3 pro, is this a good choice? I am working on doubles.

I wouldn’t suggest the Chorus for an adult. In Edea, concerto or ice fly would have been a better choice. I have adult skaters in the RF3 Pro and they are happy.

@ really? I have a few people who have been telling me that if you’re not on triples you shouldn’t get ice fly’s, specially with my size, and that adults at the rink shouldn’t be wearing them since they are overbooting.

You can’t overboot in Edea! Because of the weight of adults the Chorus doesn’t offer enough support! They’ll only last a few months. Concerto & Ice Fly are much better options to support the weight of an adult!

I’m back here after a year off ice, because I bought skates which are too big for me and at the same time hurts my middle part of foot and little finger so much. So I didn’t skate for a year. Staff sold me old version of Edea Overture (black) in the size of 250, but my feet is 238,5 and needs actually 245. I don’t know what to do, in my area there are no good figure skating shops. My feet are Egyptian type and are a little bit flat. Do you thing Risport Electra light in the size of 245 is better choice? Also my old skates were way too HEAVY, I don’t know if it’s the fault of the boots, or the blades (Mark IV). My height is 163 cm and weight 50 kg. About feet type I already wrote (they are mid-narrow type also). I want to go back to figure skating lessons, I can’t do any jumps for now. Can you help me with choice of best skates for me? I live in Poland so I’m far away from a specialist you’ve recommended and here nobody helped me properly :( Thank you in advance! Amelia

Edea Overture should not be too heavy they are very lightweight. The blades shouldn't have added that much weight either. Have you returned to the shop where you purchased them and expressed your concerns? They should have been able to make adjustments for you to make good on your purchase! The best thing to do is to ask your coach, skating director, or other skaters where they go for skates and stick to those trusted places. I gave up figure skating years ago and now I think ALL of my problems stemmed from the wrong skate (boot & blade). I had custom skates made at SP-Teri in South San Francisco and they were NEVER right. I had taken a break from skating with the birth of my second child (I started skating in my early 20's and was never interested in competing). When I returned to skating with my fresh custom made skates in hand, I met with a coach at the rink because something was just off (well, many things were actually!). Instead of blaming the skate, the coach said that I must have learned basic techniques wrong and would have to start over because my skating foundation was wrong. After finding your channel, I am starting to think that it was my skate all along!

It could have been. Or, it could be that the skates you were in before the SP-Teri skates caused technique issues. It's really hard to for me to say.

I’m 45 years old 5’6 and 1/4 tall I weigh 115 I have been on the ice in almost 9 years. I haven’t owned my own skates since I was in middle school I’m pretty sure they came from a sporting good store. I skated for leisure in the past but I want to take beginner lessons this time around to get reacquainted with the ice. I was fitted yesterday. I wear a size 8 I was told to get the mystique or Artiste which of the two do you recommend?

Either the Mystique or Artiste will serve you through Basic 6. However, if you already have some skills from previously skating, you may want to consider other options such as the Elle which should take you up through Free Skate 4 in Learn to Skate USA.

The best thing to do is to ask your coach or group lesson instructor what they suggest and where they recommend you go for a fitting. For your size, the Overture is suggested by Edea for single jumps, including the Axel. But that is just a suggestion - everyone is different. It depends on your skating style and budget too. Keep in mind that you really cannot overboot in Edea. So, please see what a professional tech at an authorized Edea retailer recommends for you!

Hiii Aimee, I’ve been skating in Jackson Artiste for quite a while now and I’m currently moving towards getting all my single jumps. My artiste are definitely not supportive enough anymore and I was thinking about going towards edea. I’m a little chubby (5’2, 145 lbs) and people around me have been telling me to get the chorus but since I’m more on the heavy side I’m scared they’ll last me waaay less time but also I’m kinda scared of « overbooting » if I go towards concertos (rated for quad and I’m only on singles). Any advice ? 🥲 (my fitter is not really available at the moment so yeah that sucks)

In generally, I wouldn't suggest the Chorus for an adult skater because it's not supportive enough for most adults and they will break down quickly. Personally, I feel that the Concerto is a perfect boot for adults, even beginning adult skaters because it's supportive yet soft and comfortable with literally almost no break in period (outside of adjusting to a new boot). You cannot overboot in Edea because the support is lateral and the tongue bends completely. Anyone that talks about overbooting with Edea just doesn't understand the way the boot is engineered as it is different from any other boot. Make sure you go to an Edea authorized dealer that is knowledgeable about Edea technology, knows how to properly mount blades for Edea boots (it's different that other boots), and can custom shape them for you without using an oven!
