I'm 17, and my dream right now is to be able to learn how to figure skate. I cannot start this year due to my university exam preparations taking 90% of my time, but I'm hoping to start my lessons next year. I'm so happy that I found your videos because even though I can't really take lessons right now, your videos being so good at informing and letting me know about the most important things make me feel like I'm being prepared. You have a great way of explaining things and I'm incredibly grateful that I found your channel. Thank you for doing this

Can’t wait for the how to tie post. Got my Jackson Altima over a month ago and still find my foot slides forward in one after skating an hour. I never know if I put them on correctly. I have never been shown even tho I get lessons and was measured for them at the skate school. Seems nothing ice skating wise is easy where I live in Australia 😣

Thants unfortunate! It sounds like the boots may be too big. Ask the instructors where they go for service!

Different brands of skates work better for different people. I wouldn't recommend that someone that has not skated before begin with Edea. Jackson is a good starting point for many skaters.

I’m 12 years old 5’5 and a size 8-8.5 in normal shoes and I’ve skated before and my birthday was last week and I’m having a ice skating party this Saturday and I just got skates from Amazon and they came today I got them in a size 9 and I feel like they fit perfectly but I am also wearing a thicker sock they are Ugg ones and they are super soft and walking around in the skates feels good they don’t feel tight but they also don’t feel loose I feel like they are just perfect I tried bending my toes in them and I can bend them just barley but they feel good.
Месяц назад
You should be wearing very thin socks. The socks you describe sound way too think for you to feel the skate and have control. I am an 8.5 in street shoes and 9 in sneakers. But, I wear a 6.5 in Jackson and Reidell skates.

My feet are size 4 and a half or 5. (I don’t have a skating shop in my country) I bought edea overture size 240 online. I tried them on (not on the rink) and they feel good. However, I am still unsure if I bought the correct size. Could it be possible that I purchased the incorrect size?
2 года назад
That could always be possible! You also have to look at the width. The best thing to do with Edea is use a foot tracing. And you measure you foot length and width. If you already have your skates, take out the insole and check the length and the width. For comparison, I’m a size 8 American, and 6.5 in Riedell, but in Edea, I wear a 255B. That’s not correct according to any size chart, but it is the correct measurement.

Last season we brought skates for me (beginner) and daughter (8years old) so we didnt have to use aufull rentals. We didn't sharpen it that season. We were few times on ice and both of us learned to basic skate and we were just fine and secure in them. Last week we finally were in ice hall where is man who sharpening blades and we get to sharpen just kids one. Now she start to complain that her left leg losing grip. Also the day after sharpening she start to fall offten. Is it maybe normal and what we should to do?
Год назад
I understand why you would purchase your own skates instead of using rental skates. However, your blade should have been sharpened before you skated on them. If your daughter is having difficulty after her first sharpening, it could be that she is adjusting to having blades that are sharpened. Even the most experienced skaters have to readjust to freshly sharpened blades - especially when it comes to stopping. Another possibility could be that the sharpening was not a good one - maybe the edges are uneven. It could also be that the skates are no longer the appropriate size for your daughter. A child around age 8 should replace their skates on average once a year as their feet grow about a size or two every year. Growth of a foot may cause a skaters center of gravity over the blade to change. This is why should ensure that your skates are the correct size for you today and not to grow into. I suggest that you ask at the rink where the best place to go is for a proper fitting and blade sharpening and your daughter's skate checked by a professional tech to ensure the correct fit. If the fit is appropriate, the tech should check the blade to ensure that has been appropriately sharpened. If everything checks out, it could just be that your daughter is adjusting to having blades that have appropriately sharpened.

I'm currently saving my allowance to buy myself a good figure skating shoes and I'll be the one to teach myself. Thank you for the tips btw!

i feel kind of guilty about having to buy new skates if i plan on learning figure skating because i feel like i haven't used my current skates that much (i skate maybe once a year max just for fun) but i already know that they're not good enough for it lol my feet and ankles hurt from using them after only like half an hour... they were only for recreative purposes so it was fine (though the pain sucked), not gonna spend a ton of money on something i only do super rarely, but still, skates are expensive
Год назад
Don’t feel guilty if you’re enrolling in classes! You’ll need an appropriate pair. Yes, they can be expensive but it’s worth it for safety and ease of profession!

I live in Miami FL and there’s no skate shops near me to sharpen my blades and heat mold my skates. I don’t know what to do, I don’t want to use my skates without the proper preparation but I’ve been trying to find skate shops and all I can find is roller skating and skateboarding, what should I do
Год назад
As I said, the best thing to do is ask your coach or the skating director at your rink. There are skate techs in the Miami area! I've asked a coach in that area in the past and she suggested: Martin at Panthers Ice Den in Coral Springs. Or Mary Beth Rubin at Ice Zone Sports in the Ft. Lauderdale area. This is why I always advise everyone to just ask! ;) There may be others closer to you or your rink. So, just ask someone!

I got fitted at the pro shop of my ice rink. They told me I was size 6. I tried them on and my toes where so close that hurt. He explained me that my toes must be close to the skate. I asked for 6.5 which is also my regular number en any shoes! I can’t wear 6 or 7 all the time 6.5… I felt the skate 6.5 was perfect a little of room but not annoying I tried the 7 also but way big for me… I did what you suggest with the insole and I have 1 centimeter showing in front of the insole… so I think I got the right size 😁
Год назад
Yes, the toes are meant to brush the front of the skate for the correct fit but also be comfortable. Your regular shoe size doesn’t matter tho. I wear a size 9 in shoes and a 6.5 in figure skates!
@Mgreenway588
@Mgreenway588 Год назад
@ size 6 was uncomfortable painful … woow that is a big difference.. not sure if each brand size varies also, I bought Jackson Artist
Год назад
As long as your foot is not sliding around and your heel isn't lifting up when you wear thin socks it should be ok. All brands use a different last so the sizing is not consistent from brand to brand.

Год назад
If you went to a skate shop, they should have sharpened them when you got them. Otherwise, you can ask your coach or skating director where the best place is go to to have figure skates sharpened. A professional tech should be able to give you an appropriate ROH for your skates and your skill level.

It sounds like you may not be tying them tight enough below the hooks. Talk to your coach or the skating director and find out where other skaters go. It's possible that a coach may sharpen the skates for everyone at the rink. You can't do it yourself without a proper equipment and training.

I have been really struggling with the size... I guess I have really wide feet so if it is fitting lengthwise, it is too narrow; if it's ok with width, it's too long(with the widest ver I can get)...I don't have skate shops in my area at all and I can really use some advice. I wear a 7.5 for most tennis shoes(7 I can squeeze in but quite tight), 8 for boots. I got a pair of 7 and a pair of 7.5 jackson both the widest size I can get. 7 is really painful but when I stand on the console, my third toe is still in(I saw online this means that the width is ok), 7 I have about half an inch to my big toe. 7.5 is not painful to skate in but almost an inch extra from the top of the console to my big toe. Don't want to heat them up before I can decide on one, please help ,Thank you!!!

At my doctor's recommendation I have been wearing compression socks for a couple of years now. They are also what I wear skating as they're thin to begin with and by their very nature, fit tightly. I don't know if that's optimum but it seems to be working for me, at least so far. ;) Is that something I need to consider changing?

Not if they work for you! I wear compression socks sometimes because of my ankle injury. Skating socks usually offer some level of compression, but not at the same level as medical compression socks.

I just got a new pair of skates. I went to a pro shop but I'm scared that my skates don't fit properly because the man at the shop didn't really tell me what it should feel like. I went skating on them for about 5ish hours now and I'm starting to think that they don't fit properly. What should I do?
Год назад
Thanks for asking! Was the shop recommended to you by your coach or skating director? In what way do you think they are not properly fitted? Is it too tight? Or is your foot moving around or heel lifting? It could also be that you not tying them correctly. Ask your coach to check the fit. If something isn’t right, you should be able to go to the shop for custom shaping if it’s not the size that’s an issue. If it turns out you’re not in the correct size and a professional tech sold you the wrong size, I would contact them and ask for a refund. Then, go to a recommended shop.

@ I can wiggle my toes up and down, and the boot doesn't support my arches correctly ( they are the heat molds.). I also find I have to keep tightening them every 15-20 min. (idk if that is normal). I asked my rink where I should get my skates and they told me to go to dicks so I found the pro shop myself.
Год назад
Who at your rink told you to go to Dick's?! (OMG!!!) I hope it wasn't the skating director or a coach! When you first get new skates, you will have to adjust the lacing periodically that's completely normal! It's also normal to be able to wiggle your toes - you want that! Regarding arch support, you may just benefit from insoles - many people use insoles, myself included! Here's a link to the video that I did on Jackson Supreme Insoles, which I highly recommend: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kI8YFfI_nXE.html

I leave them on the outside ledge of the dasher boards. Most skaters bring them over the hockey boxes and keep them in the Kiss & Cry to avoid them going missing. But, most skaters know they belong to me and they are not going to touch a coach's guards. When I was new, I used to tuck them behind the hockey box on the ledge so that they didn't go missing.

@ is anyone allowed to put their stuff in the hockey boxes then? Or is it reserved for coaches and lessons? I just started learn to skate

@@galacticbananas482 In the rinks that work in, all skaters are permitted to bring their Kiss & Cry bags to the hockey boxes. However, every rink has different rules. It's always best to ask!

What do I do if there's no place near me where I can get them fitted or sharpened
2 года назад
Ask your coach or skating director where other skaters go. If there is an ice rink, there must be some way to get skates sharpened and fitted!

Do you recommend wd40 to remove smaller amounts of rust?

Another question I have is the only place I have to sharpen my skates is either my rink or a shop over 100 miles away. I know there is an option to ship out my skates but the thought of never getting them back or not being able to know exactly what I'm gonna get kinda freaks me out but bhat do you recommend?

I always recommend that you go to a professional tech for any blade services.

It's a very common issue! It will be so much easier for you to skate and learn with the right size skates!

@milamaksimovic8769
@milamaksimovic8769 Год назад
@ rhey are fitted yes :D im gonna get them sharpened before i get on the ice next weekend
Год назад
They should have been sharpened by the professional tech at the skate shop when you were fitted and purchased them. Many shops will include your first sharpening when you purchase new skates.
@milamaksimovic8769
@milamaksimovic8769 Год назад
@ yes the shop has a sharpening tech however it doesnt come with the skates, it costs $8 to do so and the shop is next to the rink so you can sharp them right before getting on the ice
Год назад
@@milamaksimovic8769 Ah-ha! I would be wary of an $8 figure skating sharpening. In my area, techs charge $30-$50 for a figure sharpening. Check with your coach or skating director and ensure the pro shop at your rink is the right place to go!

Well, I would hope that if someone is investing in skates, it's not for no reason! They should intend to use them.
