How to Calculate Concrete - Olympic Foundations

Here is a closer look at the foundation system we use. Its based on plywood panels 1 1/8" thick. We buy 2'x8' panels that are either MDO or HDO. Spreader cleats, snap ties and shoes (wedges) keep it all tied together.
I'll also show you how I calculate the amount of concrete needed to fill the walls, without ordering too much. Its a balance because a yard of concrete currently costs about $165. We also will have a pump (hourly passed a 2 hour minimum) plus all the labor onsite. So if I short us, then we are running up the bill, and if I order too much, its a waste. Don't forget to calculate enough for the pump and hose.
Please remember that I'm not showing the best way to form footings, but just the method that works well for us. Thanks for watching!
Oh and another takeaway, if you use a drone for commercial work, you need to be part107 certified. Commercial work includes social media like RU-vid if you plan to make an income off of that. I watched a video about this last May and then purchased the Part 107 Course sso.teachable.... I studied and learned for 1 month and then took my test. I scored a 95%, which is a testament to how good Greg and the crew over there teach. That link will save you $100 off the course and support this channel.

Finally, learned to measure quantity of concrete needed. It is been 2 years I work as a framer/ from work, but it is usually the formen or builders task to order concrete so didn’t get any practice.

Tim, nice video. You and I calculate the same way, count everything separately, I have guessed a few times to many, and I finally learned. I am using the same Millers Falls 2' level that I bought in 1973. It spent 2 years in a rain gutter including 2 Maine winters. It is still right on the dicky docky.

Tighten the chuck on your drill and then go back one click and it's locked. You're welcome 👍

I can't tell you how many times I've had a cheaper level lie to me flip it over is great advice. I've seen guys use them as levers and yes aluminum will bend a whole run of bottom cabs just to pull them all out and start over but I just threw crap around and felt much better anyways great video thanks

Cool to see how you guys form foundations we use strip easy system here (not my favourite) Have you done icf systems yet?? They are very simple less labour intensive and require less tools and no stripping!

In the house my father had built in the 60's we didn't snap all the snap ties off in the basement. They were useful for hanging extension cords, etc.

i take a count of how many 8 foot panels i have for 6", 8",10" walls and figure from there, aka 10 panels at 8" is 80ft x 2ft x 8". bit of estimating for pieces, just add them into 8' panels, so 12' run of 8" wall at 8' tall is 6panels= 48' x2' x 8". Good stuff tho, also can't agree more with the tie guns, permanent employee of the month

I've heard of tons of people buying homes built on hillsides like this, with "daylight basements" that have flooding issues when it rains. Why isn't this issue addressed early on in the building process, rather than fill it in and sell the house and let future owner deal with that nightmare? Seems like adding a french drain, or irrigation to remove standing water would be relatively easy at this part of the process.

In the research for my next house build, it really comes down to budget and if the builder gives a dang. If the budget is “too tight” some builders will forego the added expense and hassle of trying to convince the customer of that need. The other scenario is that the customer would find the money in the budget if the contractor cared enough to tell them. In an ideal world, the waterproofing and water management (read french drain and gravel backfilling etc) would have been discussed well before construction began. In a really ideal world, we would build houses dictated by the property and site conditions, and not the house dictating how site work is performed. Just my observations and opinions

@@philharris6858 i agree regarding dictated by property/site conditions....it seems like something the creditor and insurer would want to ensure.

Is it my speakers or audio setup or does the sound quality in the first 3:49 of the video, not the best? Later in the video (12:10), the sound quality goes back down again.

Figure out how many feet the whole job is, figure it at your 10’ and then subtract from there.
