How to calculate stair treads (rise and run) stringer layout

This is how to calculate stair treads and layout the rise and run of each stair stringer. How many steps should you add? How wide should each step be on your staircase? We go into the workshop and determine the height of the stairs needed and use the framing square to mark out each stringer.

I was thinking the same thing. WHERE did the 3/4" come from??? If u subtract 1.5" Overhang from 11.5" Board Width= 10" Run"??
@hedzzup420
@hedzzup420 Год назад
@Chris lnFlorida you wouldn't have 1 1/2" over hang on your tread. that's too much. he said leave a 3/4" overhang. 11 1/2-3/4 = 10 3/4 cut on your tread.

7 1/4" for concrete steps
@chrislnflorida5192
@chrislnflorida5192 Год назад
The Rise is easy, he mentioned your Risers height need to be somewhere between 5"-7.5". The Height of the deck from ground up is 28". Divide some # between 5"-7.5" to give u an even Rise Height up which 28"÷7"=4 Risers. What I don't know is, WHERE did the 3/4" come from to figure The Run??
@BrookelLakeKC
@BrookelLakeKC Год назад
You rise (how far you step up) and your tread (think of this as a shoe size sort of). You don’t want your rise up with each step to be to tall or too shallow or your gait isn’t smooth as you use the stairs. You don’t the treads (area you out your feet on) to be too large (deep) or shallow for your foot either. Hope this helps. He’s also giving an example of the average starting minimum it should be for comfort & safety (7”). I prefer the range of 7-8” minimum for both ride and treads.
@mehsquire
@mehsquire Год назад
7 is a bad number, because he didn't account for the thickness of the tread. That needs to be subtracted, and that's the size of your stringer rise. Then when you add the stair tread, it becomes 7.

I wasn't sure where the 3/4" came from to subtract from the 11 1/2, but.....i was able to figure out what i needed by using the example and my own numbers. I was building a cat staircase, but didn't know how to get the proper angles at all. There was enough in this video to make it happen! :) I always appreciate hearing something from someone who has the skills...i bet this guy can whip out a staircase like nobody's business if he wasn't being filmed. Thanks!

@junior215252
@junior215252 Год назад
The thickness of the “kick board” It’s going to sit on top of the 11 1/2 . The kick boards are usually 3/4 thick.
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 9 месяцев назад
It's the overhang of the stair tread, assuming you don't have facia on the riser. The "plank" he points to is the width of the tread for the step. There needs to be about 3/4" that this board overhangs the edge. If you put facia on the front of the riser, that thickness will need to factored in as well because it adds to the total length needed for the tread board. Otherwise, the face of the facia will come to the front face of the tread board, and there won't be any front overhang lip on the step.

Where the heck do you get 3/4" i dont get it i understand where you get 11 1/2" but where do you get the 3/4". And for the people saying this is a useless video it's not. He may have messed up on the math but if you realize this is just an example.
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 9 месяцев назад
It's the overhang lip. The stair tread will overhang by 3/4" so the cut should not include the whole width of the tread.
