How big your waist dart should be? How to determine waist dart width when you draft basic skirts or pants patterns? You will learn what the drop is first, after that you can calculate the dart width by your dop.
Dart width or length will be different depending on the body shape. You can adjust them when you do fitting. But here's a very simple way to calculate waist dart width when you draft skirt or pant patterns from scratch.

Your video was wonderful for helping me understand about the dart widths but what about dart lengths? How do I determine accurate measurements for dart lengths for both front and back?
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 11 месяцев назад
Here's a starting point. Front dart: hip length/2-2cm Back dart: hip length/2+2cm Then, revise them with fitting.

Hiya, how do you calculate the inches from the percent that you got? W = 32 H = 41" 13% is 1.17 8% is 0.72 16% is 1.44
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 3 месяца назад
You can go with the closest one. 1.17 is 1 1/8”

Excellent tutorial! When calculating the side seam. Is that also referring to how much seam allowance? So in you example, are you saying to do a 7/8 seam allowance?
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 Год назад
This is not a seam allowance. From the hip line you take out 13% of drop to make a side seam curve.

My hip 42 n waist 40 do the difference is 2" 2x0.16=0.32( 3/8) 2x0.08=0.16(2/8) Is this correct
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 5 месяцев назад
Hi, I would take all 2” at the back, but it really depends on your body shape.
@nmaj_couture

Please if you have w 40 and H 40 how do you calculate it please held Thank you
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 Год назад
Use 40" for waist, and add ease for the hip. And make a dart at the back for that ease amount. If you add 2" at the hip. Make 2 of 1" darts on the back.
@slrcouture
@slrcouture 5 месяцев назад
Wow this is great. Does this work the same for a waist dart on a bodice?
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 5 месяцев назад
No. This is from hip to waist. You take more from the back body than the front. But for the top, you take more from the front than the back.
@slrcouture

@@PatternStudio101 thank you. do you have a video on how to calculate the bodice waist dart?
@slrcouture
@slrcouture 5 месяцев назад
@@PatternStudio101 Do I have this correct? Waist is 26. Hip is 40. The difference between the waist and hip is 14" which would make my side 1.8", front no dart and back 2.2 " dart. The person has a flat stomach, hips and a big butt. Is this distributed correctly?
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 5 месяцев назад
@@slrcouture You need to take 7” out on half body. 1.8+1.8+2.2=5.8 If you don’t want to have a front dart, then the back dart should be 3.4”. Make 2 of the back darts. 2” and 1.4”. Then adjust with fitting.

What about length of dart
@ashaellen3511
@ashaellen3511 8 месяцев назад
Unless its the bust it normally stops above/below the fullest point of the curve
@ashaellen3511
@ashaellen3511 8 месяцев назад
By an 1”-1.5”
@PatternStudio101
@PatternStudio101 8 месяцев назад
Start from half of the hip length. Front darts are normally shorter than the back dart length, but it depends on the belly and hip shape.
@bhck7488
@bhck7488 29 дней назад
Hi Jin: Is Hip length also called DROP?
