@@kenskarpentry thank you for all these great videos. It really feels like we are there with you. We are wondering if you do any work in the Virginia area. We are planning to have a Gambrel garage w/apartment and cantilevered deck build on our property and are looking for a contractor and advice on how to proceed.
I appreciate you taking the time to do these videos, I am learning a lot watching how you work! Prayers for your shoulder to recover strong! God bless!
I have a work trailer similar to your setup when I was building kitchens. I used bungee cords and small load straps to hold things in place. Worked well for me
Not only a great builder but also a great driver! 2X12s.....must have been built when lumber was affordable. Nice to see a youtuber wearing safety glasses and hearing protection. Keep up the great videos and stay safe.
Ken good day I only wish you all the best. Thank you for all you do. Your channel is wonderfully done always. You are a gift of a good man ken. You take care brother may God heal you up soon.
Great content, I can’t believe the price of lumber. The cost isn’t crazy, it’s stupid. When I was building and remodeling myself I use to have a lumber yard I used all the time. I could go into detail in depth but I will give everyone who is reading this something to ponder on. I had a 24 feet flatbed trailer I pulled behind my truck. I use to go into this lumber yard and buy 500 2x4x8 at a time for a cost of $ 0.25 cents a piece. The cost of a 2x4x8 I priced out yesterday was $ 9.60 cents a piece. Who can afford to pay this. I could , but I refuse to. Every one in the building industry needs to protest these prices instead of pulling out their credit card and paying this! Thanks, Be careful and stay safe😀
Nice work! Lumber futures prices continue to rise $12,000 per 1000 board feet. You may see retail lumber rising. Maybe we can get some builders to refuse to pay these astronomical prices.
👍That's a nice super strong looking deck. Here's a link to a 1.5 hour vid that discusses under deck drainage if you have an interest. Seems like a good "up sell" for minimal supply cost yet a pretty good value for any labor time spent on a job.
Wow over kill lol ..cantilever on every builder's test in America so if your taking you contractor test remember this VIDEO...Great VIDEO MY FRIEND. 😎🏖😎
I really like cantilever porches.... thinking about putting a few in myself.... in some cases, it is really hard to justify the "overkill" safety factor and the additional costs... You went from 6 inch to 12 inch and 6 feet to 16 feet.... cost x 6 for the floor.... when two pieces of 4x4 from the ground would have worked... It seems that cantilever porches should only be built when cost is not a factor... :) Thank you for your videos...
Up here cantilever decks have to use the 1:3 ratio not a 1:2 for a 6 foot cantilever it should extend 18 feet into the building. Codes are different anywhere u go in the country though and that looks dam sturdy
The weather was beautiful but now winter has come back. I am assuming you are also digging out from todays' storm. Not to bad but I thought my blower was away for the season. You know New England. Looks like nice project. Take care.
He clarified in another comment that the formula applies to a 2x6, since he used 2x12 he felt it was overdone. I didn’t understand it at first either, LOL.
So at some point the exterior portion of those pressure-treated joists will rot out - do you design in a way to replace them at some time down the road? Or when you get to that point would you simply trim off the exterior portion of the old joists and sister new material onto the still intact interior sections of the original ones?
You did not stand on the deck and shout - Oh Romeo, Oh Romeo, where art thou Romeo..... just came to mind as you were climbing over the deck railing....
Hi Ken, Do you have a video which actually shows how the porch was cantilever during the construction the second story floor? If joist went in 12 ft, how were they framed?
Haha was that what it said in captions? Frost heaves is what I attempted to say. When the frost is coming out of the ground during springtime the roads get huge bumps that come right back down when the frost is gone
Those types of decks can't be attached with a header board? No, I'm not a construction expert. I have a house that has a deck like that that needs replaced.
