When you’re at the clearance rack and you see a plant that looks beyond repair, give it the scratch test! If you scratch the stem lightly and see green then there’s still life in it! Thanks for this video! 💜

Last year I saw one of your videos about buying distressed plants at a huge discount and bringing them home to revive them, then be blessed by their beauty! I can't even begin to thank you for doing these videos! I've found countless plants that looked half dead and now they grace my garden! I'm thrilled to have rescued them from total destruction! Thank you SO much!!!

Your channel is so refreshing because you see all the other gardening accounts posting videos of them planting so many full price, lush plants and their gardens look amazing from the start and although I love watching those videos, I can't afford buying so many plants all the time and I find my self often in the reduced plants section because that's more realistic for me and so many other people who don't have hundreds to spend on plants each year\ each time you start a new flower bed so its so nice to watch your videos and be able to relate to you.

For real, I love garden answer videos but she must spend thousands every year. I can't do that. I plant seeds and I love end of year clearance when plants are 80 percent off or Lowe's clearance for gallon pots for a dollar. Glad to see a RU-vidr building her garden the same way I do.

Plants from the store also tend to be root-bound so they also may need to be moved to a larger pot for the roots to spread out or perhaps planted in the ground.
@stephaniewaltman775
@stephaniewaltman775 3 года назад
Or even better since they are perennials, get them into the ground as soon as possible. But most are root-bound, agreed. Gently loosening the roots and even pruning away some from the very bottom of the root ball will stimulate new root growth.

I want to thank you so much for this video. I always thought "dead plant" when I'd see one like these in a store. I had a new ceanothus planted in our front yard that was dropping leaves and I feared it wouldn't survive. I replanted it in the ground with potting soil (our soil is a bit alkaline)and cut it back according to your directions. The old leaves quickly dried up and died, then we were hit with a heat wave averaging 108 degrees that's still going on today. I took a patio chair and upended it over the plant to keep the worst of the sun off it and watered with like you said, but just not too much. It's in the afternoon sun instead of the morning sun, hence the chair. With the shade during all this heat that poor plant is starting to come back one new leaf at a time. I never before considered the root side of the plant needs to be happy before the above-ground side of the plant can show it. That one tip gave me the exploding brain moment of "Doh! Why didn't I think of that??" Thank you again. I am in your debt and my ceanothus just might make it to maturity so it thanks you too!

I like the spray bottle with diluted bleach idea!! I have always just come inside and washed or sanitized my garden snips at the sink but the spray bottle outside is so much faster and easier. Also....the cutting back without hesitation and explaining why it helps our plants focus on strengthening for next year......needed that advice. My favorite thing you said....”don’t overthink it” Working on this.

Several years ago I was standing at the checkout with 3 terrible looking clearance coneflowers, when the man in front of me turned, looked down at the plants, them up at me, and said “you really think you can save those?” And I said, “I’m going to try!” And I now have a beautiful Cheyenne Spirit, and 2 Pow Wow Wildberry coneflowers for only a few dollars!😁

I’ve only watched a couple of your videos since late yesterday when it came up on my algorithm. In those 2 videos I’ve learned more about stressed plants and reviving them than any other place, and trust me I’ve looked around. You are a fantastic teacher and you really articulate what needs to be done very well! Like someone posted earlier most people show videos with lush plants whereas you show how to take care of actually stressed plants so one doesn’t feel like they need to give up when they stress their plants, in spite of their best efforts (I may or may not be referring to myself😇) . I subscribed right away and look forward to binging your content and to pretend to be patient awaiting your newest videos 🤪 Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I’ve done all my flowerbeds AND my best friends all for less than $100! And that’s an investment in the future as 95% of the plants are perennials! Hello with the Echinacea the dry up flowers is the best part because, that’s where all the seeds are at. And you will never have to buy another plant again.. I tell you this because this is how I’ve been doing it for about 14 years now.. Started out with 6 plants very expensive indeed. Thought to myself have figure something out. So that’s when I decided to experiment with the seeds... Now 14 years later the Community Garden is thriving with so much beauty.. And this way I have shared with many people around the neighborhood.. For I accidentally came across your RU-vid channel and I’m absolutely enjoying it... A lot insightful information definitely will be sharing your page with the other Garden Members.. Again thank you so much.... Thank You Berry Street Garden Member

Great video and needed! So many good deals on perennials on the clearance shelves at places like Lowe’s, but a lot of new gardeners aren’t sure how to save the stressed-out plants. I love how she showed up-close how to tell what’s going on with each plant and evaluate what it needs. Some of the plants at places like Lowe’s have been harmed by over-watering. You’ll see a lot of yellow foliage from this. If they’re really soaked and you’ve already done the trimming back shown in the video, I’ve sometimes tipped the plants out and let them “dry out” just a little overnight in a shaded area. Next day get them planted or back into the pot if not planting. The perennial plants need to get into the ground as soon as it’s possible. After tipping them out of the pot you can evaluate how root-bound they are. Most are. You can gently loosen the roots. If it’s a good-sized perennial or shrub (like a Hydrangea), light pruning away of some roots from very bottom of the root ball can stimulate new growth. Not too much as they are already stressed. Another step which can help is to treat with sulphur for fungal disease, depending upon how much trouble you want to go to. Thanks for the excellent video on helping stressed plants from what I call the “plant graveyard”! ❤️❤️❤️

My front yard as well. It feels so good resurrecting a plant or tree and watching it grow! Anyone can grow a healthy plant from the beginning but to revive one is so much more rewarding. I love my garden , my trees , my yard. I agree with you that watering the plants as soon as you bring them home is a must but I always also throw in a bit of fertilizer as well. Living on a prayer🙏🙏 I just joined your video. You are so down to earth, no drama. God bless🙏🙏 where do all the weeds come from in your pots, I have to pull out everyday. The Red Birds, my Mom's favorite next to the Humming Birds love my yard. Love from Mom I feel. They play in my pot plants, they knock my plants off shelves, play in the birdbaths, then it makes me sad to have that lone dove who lost its mate, and the tiny finches. My neighbors think I run a nursery. Lol God bless🙏🙏🙏

I love reduced plants, not only do I save money, I kept these babies from ending up in the dumpster! I hate throwing things out. Most stores don't pay for their plants outright, the grower gets paid from what they sell. The big box stores usually won't pay for good help that really knows plants because it's not cost effective for them. I'm always giving advice to fellow shoppers, fixing mis-tagged plants, setting up those that fell over etc. Guess I'm just missing my days in a high end retail gardening store. Oh well, their loss is our gain! New sub.

Loved your passion to care for these babies, especially that you said you are there to give them what they need! It's one of my favorite past time too and brings me joy when I see the results from the TLC they needed. Great tips - Thank you

You should talk about how much $ you saved by doing this. I’ll bet a lot. I like to shop the sale plants too. You can get good stuff cheap and bring it back to life. Thanks for your video.

Very good video! First time viewer. Just bought 3 marked down butterfly bush at big box store. Hesitated before buying them, but I could see good new growth coming along & bought them, trimmed them down to the new growth like you did & they are growing like crazy now. I do water them every day. One thing I have found that revives wilted plants the quickest is fill a big tub with water then place the plant in it, go about my business & come back & it is revived. Even if it falls on it’s side it will be ok. Then, back out you go. You make a good plant ER Dr!

I get all my plants on the clearance rack at Lowe’s as well. Unfortunately, I think the store has caught on. I’m not seeing as many plant&trees this year. I did get my Supetunias there and some Veronicas. Thanks for sharing and showing what can be done for the distressed plants.

Rainy Days try asking for the garden manager- they have authority to look at a plant you selected... review status and mark down ...even if not in clearance section

Love this video. All they need is TLC! So true!! All of my gardens are clearance plants on an acre of so many flowerbeds. Some say I have a million dollar landscape. Little do they know Lol. Probably close if I did retail cost. I have lost some plants and that was because of voles not the plant, but I never pass up a good deal and my garden is gorgeous!! Voles are gone too!! Two things I take very seriously my hummingbirds and my plants. So glad to see another plant lifesaver, so awesome! Keep saving them!

Nokesville Haunt thank you. And I’m jealous of your hummingbirds. I live in Maryland and I’ve been trying for years to encourage them in my yard. I have yet to see one.

@@GardenAddictz you know why is the best? Because this particular video speaks to the average gardener who does not get FREE plants from Proven Winners like Laura from Garden Answer. I love her videos, but it is very unrealistic for the average homeowner. You are inspiration to all....

Hi! I'm a new subscriber and I'd like to say that I enjoy your videos very much. I LOVE plants! Unfortunately I've been away from my apartment due to illness and most of my plants have died. Just as you've explained I told my children to continue to water my plants even if they they look like they're dead. When I get home I take care of them just as you do. Plants are tougher than we think and can survive through alot. Love your flower beds. Hopefully now that I'm home I can go shopping for some new plants. Take care of yourself and congratulations on your twins. As a mother of six I know how hard it is to find time for ourselves. Keep up the good work. God bless you all.

Great information. I did buy a little lime for $5 from the clearance section at Loews two years ago and it’s doing so well. I have a deer problem and after they munched on it in the spring I loosely covered it with deer nesting and adjusted the netting as it grew and it’s worked so well and I get to enjoy the blooms that have started coming up. Good rip about cleaning the cutters in between plants. Thanks!
@GardenAddictz
@GardenAddictz 5 лет назад
akatija you can also spray a deer repellent to keep them out the garden beds

Garden Addictz Spraying didn’t help. The net works on the hydrangea but I can’t cover everything. Pesky dear! Thanks for the suggestion.

I saw a lot of clearance plants yesterday they were down to .50 cents per plant but I didn’t know if I should get them because they looked like that. I’m going to go back and get them. I saw this video by chance. Very helpful. Thank you.
