what should be the ideal moisture level of Crassula ovata plant soil ?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Thank you for connecting with me. You don’t need to keep a consistent moisture level in the soil for Jade. Water it thoroughly and let it dry out before you water it again. First few inches of soil should be very dry. If soil says moist for longer period of time it can get root rot.I don’t check the level with moisture meter. I hope that’s what your were asking. If not please clarify. Thanks.

@@PlantingwithTej i got a jade from the nursery and it has small leaves. Its was a in plastic bag and so I reported it in a pot adding a little more soil to it. It get indirect sunlight and I water it only when I notice that the plant needs water. In other words when the soil is dry. Don't know why it drys off or its leaves fall of. The other hade that I bought was a variegated one, with half green and half white leaves. That to just dies of. The leaves fell off and it just disappeared as if it was watered too much. @@sandrasoaresd9198 Jade leaves call fall off from few reasons like lack of sunlight , underwater, over water, insects etc. Jade plants love a lot of direct sunlight. I have a Jade plant that is four years old. It stayed small in a North windor. I moved it to a totally different location to an East window in a valley location . In a short time, three months it exploded with new growth, As the winter season came I moved to another location fearing it would freeze. I noted the leaves turned to a redish hue. It is still growing. I am guessing sun burn? To much direct sunlight in the East window. (Location high dessert plains, Southern Colorado. 50 miles East of Publeo.) It is now in indirect sunlight. Right or wrong move? Water it only when it is dry fertilized only once in 3 years. Suggestions? Do I prune and shape now or wait to see what happens?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Please don’t move it in indirect sunlight. They need at least 4-6 hours sunlight a day to grow well. If leaves turn, pink/ red , It happens during the summer months from all the sun exposure. Sunburn will look different. It will be brown and black when it has sunburn. I keep all my jade plants in east, south and west facing windows. They stay in the same location all year around. I’m in Alberta, Canada. It goes up to -40 in winter months. As long your plants are about 2 feet away from window, they won’t freeze. None the plant should be touching the glass. For summer if it’s too hot you can move them little bit away from the window if you don’t like it changing colour. They need to be watered little more in summer than in winter. I have few other videos about jade with all the information please check it out. If you have any further questions plz comment below the videos. I’ll get back to you.

@PlantingwithTej

Usually moss grows from the soils being moist all the time. It’s better that you don’t follow a set schedule for watering like you said once week. Instead let the soil dry out before watering again. Hi, thank you so much for your video! it helps alot!!! Do you prune your smaller jade plants (like the 2 first ones in your video) as well to make the trunc thinker or do you let them grow without pruning? At what hight do you start pruning ? thank you :)
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Your welcome. No I don’t prune my small jade plants. I let them get at least 1 feet tall. Then their trunk will be little thicker as well and they will have multiple branches to prune. But I do move them in bigger pots. If a small jade has only single branch then you can prune it at the top so it can start branching out even when it’s small. Then prune those branches at the top as well. If jade plant is happy it will start putting out new single branches from the main stem as well.

What fertilizers should we give to our succulents for the faster growth
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
I don’t give too much fertilizer. Only in the growing season twice. I have used water soluble and shake’n feed fertilizer.But I plant my Jade plants in organic potting mix and move them to bigger pots every 7-8 months so they get new soil. You can crush clean eggshells and mix in the soil for Jade plants.

@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Your welcome! Yes you can. Take a sharp sanitized blade or a knife to cut the branch. You just need to let the cut heal (callus over ) for several weeks since you said it’s huge. If it’s really huge branch, it might not root properly. You can make it into few different cuttings. Keep the cuttings in shade. You can put in the ground to root it. You can root them in pots after they callus over. Let me know if you have any further questions.

I have it placed in a south/ west facing window. Just a feet away so it doesn’t touch the window glass. It stays in same spot all year around. If you don’t have access to south or west facing window then you can keep it in east facing window. Keep it as close as possible to the window without it touching. I have a very large jade plant with 8 stalks averaging 3” in diameter at the base. Is it possible to separate these trunks?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Yes you can definitely separate them and plant them in separate pots If for some reason it’s combined at the base then you can cut it. But you need to keep the cutting in shade for few weeks to form a callus before you plant it in soil. Thicker stem will take longer to heal the cut. Then once it has formed a callus you can plant it in a soil. Try not to water too much for few weeks. Once it’s established then you can move it in full sun and water normally by letting it dry between waterings. Feel free to to comment further questions.

We are in early December (the 6th) of 2021. Here in Lake Charles, LA at the end of last summer, I bought a fairly good sized jade (approx. 6x6") and repotted it into a terra cotta pot only 1 size larger than the grower's (nursery) pot. A few days later I made what I thought may have been a fatal mistake of overwatering it. It promptly protested by dropping many of it's major petals (leaves). I let it dry out thoroughly over the next 2-3 weeks and it began new growth again. I was so relieved and used the opportunity to use the dropped leaves for propagation purposes. I used rotting powder on the tips as instructed and waited patiently for buds to appear on them. Only now - about 3-4 weeks later - have it noticed what I think are new buds on them. Is it normal for propagation from the leaves to take this long? I subscribed to your channel and "liked" the video, BTW. Best of luck.

Hi make sure you don’t have the dwarf variety of crassula ovata. I have the original variety. There could be other factors too. I grow only single stem in one pot. I grow them in organic potting mix instead of succulent mix ( water only when it’s 80% dry at least) I keep them in full sun ( morning or afternoon sun) I only fertilize once or twice a year. Please check out my other Jade videos. Feel free to comment any further questions. Thank you.

@@sneaxxeno1224 I wouldn’t recommend planting in the natural soil from your garden. It will get too compacted and water wouldn’t drain properly. Plant can get root rot. If you have warm weather and planting it outside in the ground , then it’s different but I would still buy some basic potting mix and amend the soil. The soil from your garden doesn’t work well in the pots inside the house. Any basic potting mix is fine.

Please watch my all jade videos. You are suppose to let it completely drain then dump the access wanted before putting away. Also nursery pot should have drainage holes and soil should be light like mix perlite in the soil so it doesn’t stay wet for long time.

Tej, I wish I had the same green thumb as you. I have tried growing these so many times and failed. Trying again, it's starting to fail me again. I have the little tiny plant in a medium poy with good drainage/airflow, well draining soil. I do not have a south facing window but do have a west facing bay window. Other plants are thriving in this spot. All succulents are not. What am I doing wrong?

Hi thank you. I believe any one can grow if they have the knowledge. There are some plants that I had time figuring out how to care for them. I don’t a lot I’d different succulents. I mostly like jade. It’s my favourite and I have so many of them. They need at least 6 hours of sunlight. I have them east, south and west facing windows. I’m not sure what’s going on with your jade or you are talking about different succulent. I have few other videos about this particular jade called crassula ovata ( original ) please check them out. If you still have any further questions, feel free to comment under the videos. I will get back to you. I hope we can figure out what’s wrong. I hope it’s not a pest problem. It depends on a lot of factors. How many hours of sunlight it gets? How often you prune it ? How many times you repot it over the last 15 years? How often you fertilize it ? Do you water it properly ? Please check out my other videos about Jade. It has a lot of information. If you have any questions feel free to comment. I’ll get back to you. You can repot it after 2 weeks. It needs be in sunlight as much as possible. If it’s really hot in your area then it needs to be water more often. Also it’s leaves will turn little bit red which very normal fir Jade plants during summer when they get lots of sun and heat. If you like it be very green then you can keep it inside close to window or somewhere where it get 5-6 hours of sunlight and shade rest if the time. I hope I answer your question. Can the big ones live outdoors in winter that doesn’t usually get to freezing and can it accept the winter rains when they can drain out?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Where do you live ? They are hardy zones 10 and 11. As long as it doesn’t go below 10 degrees they can handle that I checked online before replying to you. For rain it’s ok as long as it doesn’t by rain often and they get to dry out completely because Jade plants don’t like moist soil for long time. It can cause root rot. You must have very good drainage but frequent rain wouldn’t be ok during winter. I wish I had experience with that. I’m in Canada so I can never leave them out except summer months. In the US they can be kept outdoor I heard.

@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
There could be so many reasons. It could be from root rot of it was over watered. You can take it out of the pots and check roots if they soft and mushy. It could also be from under watering and too much sun. It could also me from a pest. Check for mealy bugs. Please inspect the plant thoroughly and give me more information. Thank you.

@@V-q8is It’s okay for Jade to shed a leaf or two in a whole year but mine never does that unless it goes without water for long time.Try repotting it in a organic potting mix instead of succulent mix but only water when it’s fully dry. Also keep it in full sunlight. Keep it close to east window (morning sunlight) or near south/ west window( afternoon and evening sunlight ) they grow very fast in these three locations as long as there is no tree in front of the window which allows only partial shade. They grow very well in full sunlight and miracle grow potting mix and their leaves get very big and shiny. Also clean the leaves once a month. Wipe them with microfibre cloth using plain water.

Thank you so much for featuring the how-to's of Jade plants. I accidentally killed a Jade back in the 1970's. My grandmother had given it to me and it was probably 15 to 20 years old at the time. It was large and beautiful. I've never quite gotten over killing Grandma's Jade and old enough to be a grandmother myself now, I'm going to try again and have named her (the Jade) Rose after my grandmother.
