This is great! I have tried to propagate Jade from single leaf but they are rotting before curing or rooting.
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Thank you. You can also propagate leaves without any water or soil. I have tried it. Just lay them on an clear plastic or glass tray. Keep them in indirect bright light. Spray them every day if it’s really hot and dry. If not then every other day is fine too. Sometimes they rot when we spray them too much and they are laying on the wet soil. Also if we forget to water and they started drying. Then we spray water after that. Then they rot too. You can follow what I showed in the video and see if you have any success. I hope you can figure it out. It’s very easy to propagate Jade stems and leaves.

@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Yes some plants do require different soil mixture. I’m just keeping it simple for basic plants who can do well in regular soil. It keeps the cost down for the hobby. I sometimes add more perlite in soil for plants that need light and airy soil mixture. I’ll make a video about it sometime. Is there a particular plant variety you would like to know about ?

@PlantingwithTej

Your welcome ! I only fertilize then once or twice a year. I plant them in organic soil. I use miracle grow shake’n feed or water soluble. You can use wash eggshells, crush them and mix the in the soil as well as coffee/tea grounds. Then you can fertilize once a year. It doesn’t require much fertilizer if you repot it every year in fresh soil.

Also can you share what happens if your Jade plant get gnats? What is the appropriate way of dealing with that?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Sure I will in the future! If get gnats I only water from the bottom and keep the top soil dry. Also let it dry completely then gnat larvae will die. Adding mosquito dunks or bits work better than other things. I have used hydrogen peroxide and soak mosquito in water over night and water my plants with that. Water dunks helped the most. But it’s very hard to get rid of them 100%. Because these things are expensive and it’s a lot of work. But I have few gnats these days sometimes I don’t see any. I think if you have infestation then water your plants won’t mosquito dunk water for at least 4 - 6 weeks. When you see you have it under control , then start watering from bottom only. It helps big time.

I liked and subscribed. You have a great channel with a lot of helpful information. What you didn't mention was root toner or rooting hormones. Surely that would be helpful in getting these babies off to a good start. I have a jade that lost leaves due to an overwatering incident that occurred a couple of months ago. I used the opportunity to start NEW plants! Boy, one must be patient, because this is a SLOW process. Just within the last week or so they're beginning to start to sprout baby roots. I'm still keeping them above soil until they're a little further along before I bury them for good. What are your thoughts on rooting hormone? Is it worth the effort?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Thank you so much for connecting and subscribing ! I know leaves take way longer than stem cuttings. Sometimes if they get the right environment, they can grow in 5-6 weeks. They like warmth and humidity. Mine grows better in morning sun in those glass containers. I never had to use any rooting hormones. Stems just grow roots within few weeks. For leaves since they stay on top of soil and I mist them daily so I don’t know if dipping them in rooting hormone would make any difference. I never look into it. If you tried it please let me know if it can grow roots faster. Let me know if you have any other questions.

hello, I have many stem cuttings from an old jade, I have let them crust over and feel like I should propagate them in soil, is there a huge risk of overwatering them? I feel unsure of how often I should water them when they are potted?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Hi you can’t follow a set schedule for watering. It depends on how dry or humid it is in your area or in the house. For new cuttings you can water them before they completely dry out and keep them in indirect light for few weeks until they are established. They are okay with little more water first week or so because they were drying out to heel the cut. But I would say after some time only water when the leaves look soft. Please check out my watering video for Jade and I have few other videos on Jade. Please check them out. Feel free to comment any further questions. Thank you.

They will be okay in one pot if you like that look. You don’t have to separate them unless you want more plants or like the look of a single trunk.

I had my Jade plant in just water instead of soil for about 3 months and they are growing healthy. Will they last if I continue growing them in water? And just changing the water once or twice a week.
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
I have not grown any of my jade only in water but it will definitely can stay alive in water for long time. I would suggest you also add some liquid fertilizer every two months when you change water. Did your jade form any new leaves and stems while growing in water for three months ? Plz comment and share. I’m very interested in knowing if it’s getting bigger. But I’m sure that it will not grow as fast or get as big as it would in soil. I have grown around 50 plants from stem cutting and probably 100 small ones from leaf propagation all in soil. I have a 100% success with it. So I stick with this method. But I would keep one in water to see how does it perform. Plz update your experiment! Thank you for connecting!!

@@PlantingwithTej Perfect, many thanks on the liquid fertilizer tip. Will definitely note on that one. I started doing this set up since I'm quite traumatized on the first 3 low maintenance plants (I think? The palmera ones that got lots of leaves) I bought for myself during lockdown LOL. They all died one by one after 1 month. I think I did not take care of them properly. Now I had my snake plants and jade plants in water. I can see there have been new leaves growing on both of my snake plants and jade plants. It keeps coming on the end of my jade plants! I just don't know how to grow another stem from my jade plants though. Both also had new roots growing out so I'm really happy with them atm. They are all in my bedside table that is why I prefer water so, fingers crossed, they will last! :) Looking forward also to hear your experiment on jade plants in just water. Many thanks on your vlogs :)

@@Dashmiello your welcome. Palmera is not a very easy care plant. It can be tricky sometimes. I have killed a small one about 10 years ago. I think I over watered it. It’s always a learning process with plants. If your jade plant is growing baby plants at the bottom close to the root, you can cut it carefully as long as there is little bit of roots with it and place it in a closed container with soil like I have shown in the video or simply place them on top of the soil and mist daily. It will give your jade plant a chance to focus its energy into growing more stems at the top. If it was in soil it will be putting out a lot of new stems now since it’s spring time. Maybe after giving it fertilizer it will put out new branches for you. I have another video about trimming Jade so it can branch out. But I’m not sure how big is your jade. I won’t suggest trimming it unless it’s 10” tall and has multiple branches. I wish you good luck 🤞

HOW is the jade plant leaves so large?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
There are many different varieties of Jade. The one I have is the original variety of crassula ovata. But it also depends if your plant is getting enough light and are planted in a big pot. Plz check out two my other videos about Jade to see if you have the same variety. Then you can just follow what I’m doing with them. Mine always have big leaves. Even the small stem (4-5 inches) develop pretty big leaves as they establish roots. Plz feel free comment any further questions you may have.

Look at them huge leaves, even on a small plant! They are exceptionally healthy! Do you fertilize them? Any video related to that?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej Год назад
Thank you! I don’t fertilize them much but I plant them in organic potting soil mused with some perlite. I also repot them once year and once every two years for the big ones with fresh soil. Sometimes I crush washed eggshells and add them in the soil for a slow release fertilizer. Once a year I give them miracle grow liquid fertilizer and some times I don’t at all.

@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
I don’t use any special succulent soil mix or anything. I use regular potting mix. I add some perlite in it to make it little airy. You mix 20-30% perlite. It doesn’t have to be exact. As long you let it dry out between waterings and give it full sun, it should grow well for you. Please check out my other Jade videos for more information. Feel free to ask any further questions. Thank you.

I can’t recommend a particular brand of soil as I have used all sorts of different soils that are easily available in our garden centres here in Canada. Also people are watching all around the world so they might not find the soil I’m using locally. Jade plants are not picky at all about soil and fertilizer ( always dilute the fertilizer further) I think it would be a good idea to check with your local nursery in your country what they have for regular potting mix in your area. The one that’s available for growing seasonal flowering plants and vegetables. If you like just google miracle grow potting mix. Then you can see all the ingredients it has in it. I have also mixed regular garden soil with it as well when I run out. That’s how I know these plants are not picky about the soil mixture. But the sunlight and watering is way more important than anything else. As long you avoid very thick compacted soil that holds moisture for very long, you will be good. I don’t make any special soil mixtures for my plants. I just amend the soil with perlite or vermiculite according to the plant if it really needs it. Like plants that like a lot of moisture, I mix vermiculite as well. I don’t want to complicate it and make it expensive specially when it’s not necessary. There is no soil magic for the plant if it’s not getting the sun and proper watering it needs. I hope it helps but feel free to ask if I miss something. Thank you.

Hello Tej lovey, hope your well so I’m trying to propagate some jade cuttings, I’m trying two in water and 4 in soil, now things are going fine so I think…hah but what could the problem be if the cuttings in water aren’t developing roots even though I’m doing everything right? How do you feel bout LECA instead of soil, what do you think? Love your Jade plants ! 🙋‍♀️🌹💜
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Thank you Erika. I have personally not grown any in Leca but I have heard mixed reviews. It depends on how long it will hold the moisture because jade like to dry out quickly after it’s leaves soaked all the water they need. But there is no harm in trying one plant in Leca. I would love to know how it went if you did the experiment. I personally have all my jade planted in regular soil mixed with some perlite like 20 % to add aeration so the soil can dry out quickly and doesn’t compact much. But I never over watered my jade plants even though I have them in pretty big pots.

Thanks for such a great video. You are very courageous to cut the plants and just pop them into soil and they grow happily!!👏 If my plant is about 6" long with no leaves along most of the trunk, can I repot it and push the stem down further down into the soil? Will roots come out from the side of the trunk? Will it be ok and continue to grow as a shorter plant?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 дня назад
You’re welcome 😊 Yes you can push it further down in the soil, it will grow more roots. But if your plant is so small and has no leaves I wouldn’t risk repotting it as it can die or get a root rot if you accidentally overwater it. If you want to keep it short then you can prune the top every year. Then it will stay short and compacted.

Hi i saw 1 stem that has the top stem rot n some leaves with black spot. I hv been placing them beside stain window with filtered light .
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
You should cut out the rotting stem and leaves. All the way when you don’t see rot in the stem. Keep cutting until you see all greenish yellow stem, no black or brown spots. I would take the plant out of the pot and check roots as well. In case there is a root rot. Then repot in a dry soil. Sometimes you will have no root rot but a stem will rot at the top or middle. I have seen a video like that. It could be fungal infection if roots are good. Then you have to cut any stems that are not looking healthy You should move your plant in direct light. Try moving it few feet away to a non tinted window or bright indirect light until it recovers.

Jade plants have very small root system and very thin roots. As long as they are healthy, it’s good. I think it’s fungal infection that has started in the stem somewhere if roots are healthy.

I would like to recommend you you prune one stem as well depending on how big is your plant. Stem grows much faster then the leaf in case you are not wanting to wait super long.
