This video instructs families with a baby with Microcephaly how to work with their baby. My name is Amy Sturkey, PT. I am a pediatric physical therapist in the US. I'd like to give some ideas to families who want to help their baby with Microcephaly due to the Zika virus. This video teaches a simple technique in how to carry a baby whose legs are stiff. I taped this video specifically for families with a child with Microcephaly; however, this technique could be used with any child with a developmental delay who holds his/her shoulders elevated. I hope you find this idea useful and simple to follow through.
My website is www.pediatricPTexercises.com. My Facebook page is Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises. My informational books, "A is for Autism," "C is for Cerebral Palsy," "D is for Down Syndrome," "Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Hips" and "Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Knees" are available on Amazon. "A is for ADHD" should be available shortly. Do not hesitate to contact me at amysturkey@gmail.com with questions, concerns or favorable reviews! Please note I am unable to provide treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated.
I am so honored to have people from all over the world watch my videos. I have reviewed and corrected the closed captions for this video so that you might understand what I am saying even if you don't speak English. I hope the directions below are helpful to you.
To turn on Captions, click CC in the bottom right corner of the video.
To choose a different caption language:
At the bottom right, click Settings. It looks like a wheel.
Click Subtitles/CC.
Select a language.
If the language isn't listed when you click Subtitles/CC:
Click Auto-translate.
Select a language.
Of course, if the captions are in the way of viewing the details in the video, you can always turn them off in the bottom right-hand corner of your video screen.

Hello doctor , me and my wife really appreciate your videos and the effort you do to educate people. we live in turkey and one year ago my wife had a birth to a twins and it was early birth in the 30th week so they stayed at the premature ICU for one month and during this period one of them had to be connected to some machine to support him with oxygen. unlucky now he is suffering from stiffness in the arms and feet, cant sit independently of handle tommy time. Doctors told us to do a lot of exercises to him and go to physical therapists to show him to them. we are really interested in your opinion as we try to watch all your videos anything from you will be appreciated thank you in advance

I am so glad you have found my channel. Unfortunately, it is considered unethical for me to provide treatment recommendations for a child that I have not personally evaluated. On my channel, there are playlists that give ideas for a specific problems. Maybe the playlists can help you find the most applicable videos the easiest. Please forgive me. I am not sure why this response is showing up now 8 months later. I have posted a lot of videos now on this play list and on my playlist for children with low tone to give ideas of how to help a child stand. Hopefully you no longer need my assistance.

One of the best resources for toe walking is one that you can find by searching online for "Clinical Practice Guidelines for idiopathic Toe Walking" by Cincinnati Children's Hospital. I haven't done a video on toe walking. If I found a child I could video, I definitely would!

What about stiff neck arm and leg baby

I do not have a video for that. I recommend you find a local pediatric therapist who can help you and show you. The answer would depend on your child and how they present

Is leg stiffness alone indicative of anything?

A baby’s leg or legs should not be stiff. If they are, please consult with your doctor and a local physical therapist

@@pediatricPTexercises thank you! I have an appointment next week, but can’t help staying up all night googling, researching, and reading textbooks to find out the cause until then. He definitely has rigidity in his lower legs and as he’s getting older/stronger he’s able to resist us bending him more so that’s why I noticed it was so prominent. But I’m confused by it all, as at birth he was at risk of low tone due to minimal reflex response, and now he’s on the opposite end and has almost too much tone. Post partum anxiety doesn’t help. Hopefully a week goes by quick!

Sorry for the delay in my response. It is the holidays in the US. I am away from home. Unfortunately I cannot do videos with children who are my clients. I have plenty of floppy clients. But for my videos, I don't know any children who are not clients who are not typically developing. There is also a great deal of range in floppy. Some babies are a little floppy and others amazingly floppy. There are some of my clients I would have done this style of carrying with and others that are just too floppy. I did start filming Colton when he was very young so I would catch him when his head control was poor. ...so in a very indirect way, I have to say, I don't think I can help you very much given the limitations in the children I have available to video. I wish you the very best.
