With the constant tension cast you are literally casting the fly rather than working the loop . With one the loop is carrying the fly . The other the fly is pulling the line. Your video helped me understand why I was having trouble casting a weighted fly.

God that makes me glad I moved south from Michigan LOL! Gotta admit though I really miss the fly fishing there and the beautiful northern lakes and streams. Just don’t miss that long long winter a bit.
To Snookist 54. Read issue of Tail magazine with article ( by me) on Weight Balancing Flies - related to using and CASTING giant flies (and especially for distance) for billfish. I've been advocating doing this for billfishing for 30 years. Spoke publicly at fly fishing shows and presentations at fly clubs advocating this. No one listened. Had only ONE flybillfisherman come up to me at an event during all the years doing this. It's just amazing how fly fisherman DONT want to catch fish and will do all they can to prevent themselves from catching big fish. Seems that way at least.
Hi Gunnar! What is your best tips on casting really heavy flies (upwards of 1/3 oz) AND 700grain lines, lets say on a 12wt rod. Perhaps you can make a video about it? Tight lines from Sweden.
So I’ve been enjoying fly fishing. Where I live I have fished for small native brook trout and stocked trout. Using 2wt rods and sometimes 4wt. I cast a non weighted dry flys 98 percent the time. I have a 8 wt and want to start to target largemouth and do some saltwater fishing as well. I never tried throwing bass streamers and things with weight. I tried the other day and I look like I’m brand new again! Please any tips would be appreciated. I don’t know much about fly lines other than you have floating line and sinking line and you have crap quality vs good quality. The line is floating line that came on my orvis encounter (cheap I know but all I can afford) the leader length looks to be atleast 9 foot. Should I shorten it? Also by what I see you doing, casting weighted flys looks so different in movement compared to throwing a small size 16 caddis fly.
So Gunnar, do your neighbors think you've lost your mind? Flycasting in the middle of the winter is not normal activity especially since you're not in a stream with steelhead in it. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
You should try casting in 40 below zero. You let it fly and then it hits the ice in the Safeway parking lot in Fairbanks Alaska. It cracks the line as it rolls. I got on the front page of the newspaper from doing that. I was practicing for the national casting championships!

I’m sure you have thought of applying your talents to big game saltwater where the tackle pricing is commensurate with your skill, dedication and imagination. Sailfish, marlin etc anglers around the world would benefit from your abilities. Consider it! Just saying!
