I got my training years ago on the last 4 miles of the Wekiva River. There the goal was on the edge of the current, to hit the base of a tree trunk and let it fall into the water while the john boat drifts free.
I like to use a shorter rod around trees or other obstructions to casting. Up here in the mountains a long rod just doesn't work as well as a shorter one when you have to cast around stuff accurately. So I use a 5' rod in creeks instead of the 7' I use for open water. I grew up in Florida saltwater fishin' and used shorter rods for around mangroves too.
Hey new follower, I have a question about rod choice, lets say I have a 7'6" medium heavy/ fast action, and the same rod in a 6'6" what applications do you use each rod, thanks for your input Andy
I'd use the longer one for longer casts, and the shorter one I would use in canals or tighter spots. Also the short one should be better for vertical presentations, like deep jigging. Also the more flexible one is probably best for lures with treble hooks and the stiffer one should be better for thicker single hooks. That's my opinion anyway.
