That's some TRIPLE A casting experience right there. I joke a lot on this channel, but Cpt. Dave is no slouch, that's EXACTLY how you cast fellas.

Hello. New subscriber. Luv the video's. Could use some advice. Grew up in Galveston, Texas. Did a lot of fishing back in the early 90's. Used a small spin cast for inshore/ bayside of island. Offshore along the beach front a few miles out i caught blacktip's, taggable bull red's, Crevalle, and a few King's. l used a Penn 330GTI on a Castaway Tarpon Tamer for that but eventually sold the rod. I still have the 330GTI in great shape and last year decided to start doing some fishing again. I bought a Ugly Stick Tiger rod for the 330GTI, but i was gonna run braid on the 330GTI this time. I wasn't doing any casting with it. I recently purchased a Penn Fathom 300 and 400 high speed low profile. The 400 was going to be for surf fishing/pier fishing with 1-3 ounce pyramid weight's. The 400 is set up on a 7'6" Okuma rod rated for 20-40lb line(PCHI-C-761H). I had no problem flinging it in the surf. My 300 series i mounted on a med light 6'7" Falcon Clear Water rod rated for 1/16 to 1/2oz. My thinking was for inshore fishing/bay fishing using the 300 casting something weighing in the 1/4 ounce area using popping cork's or jig's or dead bait on small speck's, red's or croaker's to whiting. I am running 20lb braid on the 300. I had all kind's of problem's casting light stuff with it. Doesn't matter how much i tried adjusting the spool tension or cast control. I think i am all off on what i was trying to make my Fathom's do especially the 300 after watching some YT video's. Guy's are running 65lb braid on Fathom 400's going after fish i was using my 330GTI, fishing offshore. I have 40lb braid on my Fathom 400. The 400 threw fine in the surf for me. What do i do with the 300 series and how should i set it up? And does my 330GTI old school compare to the 400 series Fathom. I was gonna put 65lb braid on my 330GTI but now i'm not sure what to do with it. When you have the time or could a viewer point me in some direction please :-) I'm thinking of switching back to a spin cast for the light stuff... but need advice on using the Fathom 300 and 400. Thanks

capt dave great video, explain the casting on conventional would be great. westcoast throw conventional with so much ease. northwest fishery we don't use for casting surface irons mostly troll, flutter spoons, bottom, sp. on the long-range boats I see 8' -10' rods, we don't fish that long on east coast 5-8', preferably. I keep learning, also send a pm for charter rates- seems to be a capt that has a lot to teach about the fishery. Want to catch yellowfin, halibut, lingcod.

What line combo works best for casting surface irons? Meaning braid to mono, Flouro? Or just straight mono for smooth line casting?
@YourSaltwaterGuide

I like Braid But Mono is way easier

Great tips! 9 or 10 foot rod recommended or can you get away with an 8 footer?
@carter7371
@carter7371 2 года назад
Do not go 10ft for your first Jig Stick. The longer the rod the more leverage the fish has on you. 9ft is just fine to start.
@YourSaltwaterGuide

I like 9 foot
