You holding the halter out in front of you and walking straight toward the horse. Hysterical to watch. Even tho this mustang wasn't hard to catch, you made some good points. Worth watching,.

Something I learned recently is if you do keep your horse(s) out in a large field, is to train them to let you walk up to them in the first place, whether you catch them or not. It takes a long time and commitment. It makes them a bit easier to catch in a large field, though. My uncle has a mare who wouldn't let me approach her at all in a big field, but after many months of me taking a few minutes each time I visit to approach her, she now lets me walk up to her where she didn't before. It's still a work in progress, but there's been a significant improvement! I'm not a horse trainer or anything - just sharing a thing I learned recently that I found helpful. Hopefully it's useful to someone else, too! Haha

This is so similar to teaching dogs. Yes, ending on a "high note" to make them successful and with something pleasant like "My halter goes on and I get grass" (or in the case of my dogs: "If I let her put my coat and boots on, I get to go for a walk") gets very good results.

Good video as far as it went. Horses get a lot harder to catch when they're with several others and in a larger space. Could you show us that? Not everyone has the luxury of keeping a single horse in a small space.

Nicely taught! 😍 Please let me say in advance, that I love to follow all your lectures (for now I'm "corona-broke"😅 otherwise I'd be one of your patreons!) ... but you got to admit, this ain't a "hard to catch" horse!? If my little gelding gets overexcited and too concerned I literally have to >> forget wanting to catch

I am no horse trainer but I do pride myself in being able to catch almost any horse. The owner of the barn I worked at when I was 13 drilled all of these things into my head because he had a few uncatchable horses. I now work with a few horse trainers that I respect but there are a few colts that they struggle to catch every day. I can see exactly what they are doing wrong and they are just simply amazed that I have no problem catching the same horses

I have a long yearling, 15.2hh, 990lbs, draft. In his 20x50 paddock haltering is easy, he likes it because he knows he’s going somewhere fun. He goes out to pasture with older gelding buddies in the morning. But he is brought in by 3pm, two hours before the old guys to give them a break from him. I would like to see a trainer address this real life situation. Catching a big, pushy young colt in a 4 acre, irrigated pasture with buddies he doesn’t want to leave. It is a daily workout and test of patience 🙄. He is getting better but it’s every blooming day 😮‍💨

When working as a stable hand, yeaars ago, part of my job was to fetch the horses from the field. This was done to let the next group out, but happened to coincide with mid day feeding of grains. So, after a short while, all I had to do was show ut at the gate and call to them.. and they would come running.. to get grain ofc, I was just a means to an end for them :P So, horses out after breakfast, in for mid day feed and next group out, and second group was just as happy coming in for supper. I never carried treats, just halters.

"Take them out and eat some grass." 💥💯 THIS REALLY WORKS!! They will literally come to you and beg to be haltered to go for a walk to eat some grass. I learned this by accident because I always did what people told me not to: "Don't let them eat grass" they said... "F that!" I said, "We're going to go eat grass." 🤣 🐎❤🐎

Hey there, Ryan! Asking this for a friend with horses in training. They hadn't been handled for about a year before she got them. One of hers can be caught. Even when she approaches it this way, the other horse will sometimes decide to be caught and sometimes bolt. Impossible to catch in the round pen most days. She has tried the "if he wants to run, make him run!" Approach to no avail. Thoughts?

Nothing wrong with what you are doing, but it is VERY possible to teach a horse to be caught on a big pasture. I do it on 60 acres often. Sure it takes longer the bigger the space, but it still works if you aren't too lazy to do some walking. No need for the portable panels that most people don't have or the small pen.

I was hoping to see a suggestion to catch a horse in a pasture. Most anyone will get a halter on a horse in a pen. My horses are in a 10 acre area. One is hard to catch some days. There is nothing here that helps. Grain works but I'd prefer not to use it.

Hi, I have a horse who can be difficult to catch on 10 acres - what I do is approach his herd-mates first, don’t go straight up to him. When I approach him I make sure that if he even THINKS about leaving, I back off. When I get up to him, I spend time with him, rub on him, and make haltering him the last thing on my mind. In the beginning, we would have to do round-penning on a much larger scale bc he would see me and immediately want to leave. There’s no way to keep up with them in a large pasture obviously, so you have to emphasize backing off and releasing when they turn to look at you from a distance. I’m not big on using cookies, but if you have a hard to catch horse and you’re confined to a schedule or a task, no shame in using that as an aid sometimes. Hopefully these little tips help.. I felt compelled to respond since I know what this is like.

Man I wish my horse was that easy! I took in a mustang/arab cross that pretty much was never taught to catch. IF you can get up to his shoulder...well, that's not happening most the time. But if you get a rope over him, or anything around his neck, he rears and spins away from you. Drug me through the mud.... I had been teaching him to self halter, and he'd stick his nose in and I'd slowly shimmy the halter up his nose, that worked well for awhile. Then I got a second horse and that whole approaching him/getting anywhere near never happens. His pen is big enough he can get away from the pressure, and being the cross he is, he is happy to run for an hour +. Needless to say, I'm sending him to a trainer with a smaller space and more time.

See, I understand this working if the horse being caught is just reluctant to getting caught. One of the horses I ride clearly loves work and happily let's you catch her most the time, but she is super playful and sometimes wants you to chase her. Do you have any tips for that?

I can catch my horse he’s really good with that but sometimes he wont move once I have him on the end of the lead rope and it has taken me like an hour plus to get him to the barn but I don’t give up bc I don’t want him to learn that it will stop me but I just need to save time. How can I get him to come with me. He leads fine any other time just not getting him out of the pasture!

I used to have this issue with my boy. I began to take him places he wanted to go to. For example we have 2 paddocks at the house which are always full of lush grass. At first he wouldn’t move one I finally did catch him because he thought we were riding. I switched up the routine and took him somewhere he actually wanted to go. He then became very willing to come. Now most times I ride him first then reward him with the lush paddocks. Also I think just building a better relationship with your horse. Tambo respects me now more than he ever has and I think our bond has developed very well from where it was. I think this has also helped me with this issue you are having. Hope this helped x
@bethanydibley9030

Oh and when I say that I took him places he wanted to go, I didn’t do this all the time. I think I did about 50-50, half of the times we rode and the other half he went to the paddock.

This video was helpful and straight to business, thanks! My not too horse savvy neighbors bought their 12 year old a yearling stallion (I've recommended they bring a vet in to rectify that), and I just tried to catch him in the field. I was double guessing myself because I haven't handled yearlings before, and it turns out I'm doing it right when comparing to this video, I just need to give us a little more patience, and perhaps not the massive distraction of my 8 year old yelling "MOM, I'M HOT, I WANNA GO HOME!" at me from the gate, making me rush it. I'll be able to halter him next time if I bring my kid some snacks and cold beverages. ;-) My progress today was to round pen him a little, and let him know I'm not going to eat him for lunch if he lets me up close, so we got off to a decent start. The horse has a fantastic temperament for a horse any age, and he'll make a great kid horse after a couple years of consistent training and a gentle snip snip from the vet. Between me and another neighbor who used to work as a colt starter for a rancher, I think we've got this.
