Lol....I’m in Kentucky, and I’ve had a rat snake in my shed for several years. She’s a big girl, close to 6’. If she’s chilling on something I need to get to, I gently pick her tail up, put my hand under her middle and pick her up. She’s very mellow. I’ve only had one rat snake give me a hard time. He was on the road and I was trying to get him off before he got run over. I think he thought he was a black mamba lol In reality, he was probably feeling vulnerable being out in the middle of the road. I got him off safely.... Love my critters of all kinds!
Nice, very simple. My issue is probably confidence when grabbing snakes. I think I mostly just overthink it even though getting bit by small non-venomous snakes isn't a big deal.
I hear you there. I definitely was there a few years ago. The trick is just to practice so that the moment you see a nonvenomous snake you grab it. Normally, for instance, I grab snake a lot quicker than I did in this video. I just needed time to explain my methods. Another tip is to use your foot to gently pin it down (I don't recommend this to everyone, especially not to beginners, because some people don't know how to be gentle which ends up hurting the snake. But someone with your experience should be fine). Anyway, thanks for watching!
Till this day I believe in pinning below the head with a stick or something lengthy, and just grabbing that area with my hands, I'm not picking up anything freely or all that sneaking shit .
Could hurt the snake that way. Dont be a sissy. A cat can F*** you up way worse when just playing than a rat snake can even if it did try to bite. Mostly their strikes are bluff strikes.
Tell that to the 6' + Eastern Rat Snake I just moved out of the road today in NC. He was feisty as all get out! He legit climbed straight up a Hemlock tree once I let him go, but he zapped me good, and drew blood. I still feel good he didn't get run over though, but he was hot, and ready to mingle.
Haha yeah bull snakes have more of an attitude than rat snakes. But a bite certainly won't hurt you, and is in my opinion all part of the experience (with non-venomous snakes that is).
Yeah true. Didn't hurt any worse than poking yourself with a needle. After that, I found a couple of long sticks to pick it up with. That was a lot of fun.
I just found one today, but all I use to pick up a snake with is leather gloves. It was only a baby and I named it Billy Bob. Im holding him right now and he loves you alredy. Srry I'm 1 year late.
Does it hurt if these rat snakes bite? I had one in my yard and he definitely knew I was there. He was staring at me but never opened his mouth or showed any aggression towards me.
Feels like high grit sandpaper. Pain is depending on your tolerance, but Id take a ratsnake bite over a mosquito bite. And over being musked by the snake.
Cool. I have to warn you, you might take a bite using this method. But honestly, it's worth it. I would have lost a lot of snakes if I only used snake hooks and bite-free techniques.
Try that with the yellow rat snake I caught this morning she would have had your ass for breakfast. I am 51 and know what I am doing I caught her using a pool net and my tshirt that 3 foot female is the true defination of bitch! I however do keep frozen rodents where I live in North Carolina I see really cool, sometimes problem children (copperheads) and rat snakes are most common in my area. Behind me is a small lake so there's venomous and non. Rat snakes that are really friendly i like to handle, but today's catch is probably going to be fed and released in a week if she continues hostility. I really love grey rat snakes as they are usually the calm friendly ones. I have played with 17 foot Burmise Pythons and retics 10+ feet long, all as sweet as can be. I am considering maybe getting a 75 gallon tank and a grey rat snake to make him a perfect setup. I mean plants, places to hide, a branch and a dishpan water bowl. I would love to have one as friendly as the one I gave to a friend, she was spoiled rotten plus.
I saw one the other day but it crawl back quickly into I small crack it just kept it’s head poking out a little I always wanting to catch a snake hopefully my time will come
One year we had four different mating pairs during the dirty then the exact same fall as we were putting firewood up I lifted up a piece of plastic to put more on and not even a year old baby was staring face to face me and it scared the 💩out of me
