Hello from Kentucky land between the lakes. These yo yos are Awsome for survival packs and kits. You can set them up and fish while your doing other stuff like building fire or making shelter. They are a must for any survival pack or bag. Thanks for sharing and I got to get me some of that bait you got. 🇺🇸
For some reason they made yo yo's illegal here in Texas. I remember using them growing up (about six decades ago) and helping to put out limb lines too. I also make my own cheese bait now and it's all I use anymore. I'm well past the stage of sport fishing. When I go now I'm "hunger-fishing!" And cheese bait is what works best for eating size cats. Good on ya mate, keep up the good work!
Nice video. Let me share a money saving tip. Instead of buying the treble hooks made for punch bait...... Take a old pool noodle and cut it in about one inch squares, push the eye of the hook up thru the noodle square and tie it on your line.. It's porous and holds the scent well. We have used them for years. Sounds silly but I promise you it works. Keep up the good videos , we love them.
I feel so good. Yesterday I was watching a hunting and trapping movie. Al of a sudden I could tell you why the man was not getting his Beaver. It pays to watch your show. Fantastic deal keep doing all the fantastic work. Don Jacksonj
I'm from Russia and follow your videos, bro. Thank you for sharing with us. At least I know how to feed myself theoretically:) How to make that catfish cheese?
Hi Alex, catfish cheese is cheese that went bad at the cheese factory. It is just rotten cheese. We buy it not make it. I will do a video soon all about it. Thank you for watching and have a good day.
what type of kayak do you have? I am looking at getting one for trapping purposes; issue is I'm 6'3" 275 and most kayaks I have found have a weight limit of about 300 lbs. So a couple of big beavers and weight becomes an issue.
I have a Perception Pescadore 12. Capacity is a constant problem. I recently bought a River Hawk trapping boat which is super stable and carries a lot more. I did a video on it a while back. If I were you Id look at a canoe or small boat. Teapping from a kayak is tough - and dangerous too.
i have been wanting to try the yo yos out for a while now. i live in ohio. i went down to the river and caught 6 catfish in an hour on cheesy hotdogs. i took them home and cleaned them, but my inlaws did not approve of my family eating them because of the mercury levels. i know people that eat from the rivers or run of creeks from the rivers all of the time. they do not eat wild game either. georgia and alabama are in the top 10 (along with ohio) for high mercury levels. what is your take on this subject? they have alot of money, and can buy what they want when they want. i prefer to eat off of the land as much as possible. would you eat the catfish from the rivers?
+Steven Mull I cannot tell others what they should do, I can only say what I do. I do eat them, but they are not a large part of my diet. I may eat catfish once a month. I am also in my 50's, so I believe that at my age and not eating much, I will be long gone from other causes before mercury becomes an issue. If I were under 30, I probably would not risk it. I also would not make them a mainstay of my diet. Another thing to consider is that the older a fish is, the more mercury it will accumulate, so it is better to eat smaller ones and let the large ones go as the large ones are the ones that keep the breeding population up. This is what I do. Hope this helps you with your decision making process.
+The Meat Trapper it does help. thanks. I normally keep the smaller ones because it allows the babies to survive better. I am 33 years old, and I would only eat them once or twice a month since I have other animals and fish to eat. the ohio regulations tell us to only eat them once or twice a month. I can get them from farm ponds too, which for the most part is mercury free. appreciate the advice.
Another good one Meat Trapper! Wish we had the catfish in Maine that I had on Lake Champlain growing up. Is that cheese bait JUST spoiled cheese or is there other stuff in it?
hi meat trapper I live in the UK what brand of yo yo fishing reels do you use thinking of getting a couple for bushcraft trips but don't want to get stuck with some cheap arse chinese copy hope you can help
+Tony Young Hi Tony, to my knowledge there are two versions of yo yos as far as the American made is concerned. They are both made in the same factory here and the primary difference between the two is the style of trigger. The "Whites Auto Fisher" is my preferred model. It comes in a blue box and has a round wire trigger, The "Mechanical Fisher" comes in a red box and has a flat style trigger. In reality it's just personal preference and the differences are minor. Scroll down in the comments below as Gullars has posted a link for them in the UK. Let me know if you have other questions and have a good day sir.
Hey meat trapper what are the regulations for yo yo s in Alabama I have interest in the the use of them it's great to see a fellow Alabamian putting out great information thanks
I tie my yoyos a little closer to the water and leave them overnight. If they are that high, they pull the fish mouth out of the water and will die too soon.
HI Meat Trapper, I'm wondering on one of the Y0-Y0's you had a screen door spring. How long was that spring? It appeared to be appox. 4" or so in the video shot. Thanks for your info on this subject.
Danny Walker I use whatever is handy, no specific size or type. The idea is to just provide some give so that a large fish won't break it. Thanks for watching.
Trapper, I'm one of your biggest fans but you piss ed me off. I have been wanting to limb line fish and off you go. Is the cheese bait your own mix ? As always thanks for the good information.
The great thing about cheese is that scale fish seem to ignore it. I never catch carp just catfish. Stuff is expensive to ship but it does work well. If you ever travel down to swamp country its worth buying to avoid paying for shipping.
have you seen I guess it is called a de hooker made from a bucket handle they come in handy. when setting lines out we use mainly perch have not found any thing that works better. great video
You mentioned in one of your videos that you get your catfish cheese in Alabama. Would that be River Cat Bait Shop Leroy, AL?? If not, could you share where?
+The Meat Trapper Thanks I'll try the cheese next time I trotline. I use live bluegill for flatheads. And, I' ll try the cheese for channels. Appreciate it.
+Don Jackson Catfish cheese is cheese trimmings, spoiled cheese and cheese that did not "take" when it was made. Dealers buy the scraps and waste from cheese makers and resell it as bait. You can buy it by the 55 gallon drum or the 5 gallon bucket. I have a fella two hours from here that buys it by the tom once a year. I bought 70 pounds this year from him. Hopefully that will last me a year. I also want to experiment with it as a trapping bait this winter.
+The Meat Trapper Thanks. I showed my grandma your videos and she is gon to try out some of your recipes. she likes that I am into eating off of the land. I always give her ramps and morel mushrooms every year. one of these days I would like to expand my traps and snares to help my family out more, but right now I have enough for my wife and kids. it just takes time. next on my list is the quarells turtle trap.
Thanks, Bud-- have been looking at these little boats at Big 5. I've got a 12' Fiberglas boat that requires at least two guys (at least at my age) to load into the pickup. These look to weigh a fraction of what the fiberglas does, and I know one guy can handle it. Not being a swimmer, I'll use a vest--these don't look as stable as my existing boat, but the Rio Grande isn't particularly deep most times of the year. Thanks again!
Hey buddy, You can buy it online from Memphis Net and Twine or Fishnetco.com, but shipping on a 45 pound bucket is painful! I have a contact locally that buys it by the 55 gallon drum and then emails when it's available. I buy it by the 5 gallon bucket. I've got a video in the works about how to cook it down into a punch bait by adding fish oil, blood meal and cotton fibers to help it stay on the hook. If you can't get catfish cheese, next best thing is cheap Walmart brand Velveeta cheese melted down.
The Meat Trapper Thanks that stuff looks like it does the job. Do you have any problem with mudfish taking it? It seems around here, if you bait for catfish the mudfish and gar will want some too. I will watch for that video to come out.
The great thing about cheese it that grennel, gar, turtles and everything else pretty much ignore it. The cheese is pretty much catfish only, which is why people are willing to pay extra for it and put up with the smell.
Those catfish were just right for eating! I've never used a yo-yo, just a straight up limb line, jugs, and trotlines. Well, and the super effective fyke net like you showed at the end, but that was for a summer job for fish & game, and has been completely illegal everywhere I've lived for regular folks. Here in Oregon, none of those things are legal - we even have to get a special license to use a second fishing pole! It's amazing how different the rules are from state to state! Happy fishing!
