You will catch more by hopping the head along the bottom like a drop shot. We use it on the east coast for fluke but with a bucktail on the bottom. When the bait moves up and down they are much more aggresive

Rodney Marquez np and if you are going after bigger halibut I would say go up to a 6/0 and a 5 inch swimming mullet. We use the bigger baits in deeper water with very high success rates with my biggest being 8 pounds which for us is huge as the max is about 14 and the average is about 3.5
@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel
@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel 6 лет назад
where you fishing at? Ill try 5 inch + next time I go out
@marcopug1729
@marcopug1729 6 лет назад
Rodney Marquez I live in New York what we use is a popcorn rig off of boats when in deeper than 60 feet. It's basically a 6-12 ounce weight with two loops with a 1/2 ounce bucktail or 7/0 hook with a squid skirt threaded on. The bigger baits also can catch rockfish, calicos, and white seabass. We catch fluke black seabass (more like a grouper) and striped bass too

Gulps the ticket for sure... but you can catch a (short) Hali most any day next to the Shelter Island boat ramp. I have yet to catch a legal over there, but everytime I'm there, Hali's are caught. If you've been pounding sdbay a lot, go on sdfish.com, there's a great write up on fishing sdbay(by dj thrillz) it tells you where you are most likely to find Halibut. (other fish too.)

Seen this done on the east coast for fluke. Don't see why it wouldn't work here if it works there. I'm gonna stick to the regular drop shot though. I haven't had any issues hooking up with a single swimming mullet, and if something breaks my line, at least I only lost one bait, not two! Those things are expensive haha.

For this type set up you can benefit greatly from two thing. First a duo snap lock at the bottom of your rig and a Two way ball bearing swivel at the top. This will stop twists and the Duo snap lock will allow you the ability to change lures without having to make a knew knot. Two way ball bearing swivel is about $5.00 for 3 and the Duo snap locks( Would recommend 50lb strength cost about 4 bucks for a pack of 10. Seen it where other schools of fish move in and by the time you try to tie on a new rig there gone.

How do you thread the mullet onto the worm hook all the way l? Whenever I try to hook it up, the hook only goes so far until it has to exit from the middle of the bait. Would appreciate some advice, thanks.

Rodney, nice WORK! love the video. I jumped the gun on this one. Monday, I tried double ds but still with actual weight on the bottom and just 2 hooked mullets, spotties were the only takers.... I have been using that rig for a few months down here in the Baja. It works great. However, in the end all of the hook ups come on the top hook. So I usually end up going back to the drop shot in the end. Quick question.... When fishing drop shot for Halibut, I have had their teeth cut the line and I lose my line from the hook to the weight. I don't lose the fish, but many times that tag and weight get cut off during the fight from their teeth. What type of leader do you use to avoid this? I only use 12 pound fluoro, and so maybe I need to go bigger? Just not sure if the Halibut are line shy or not, and so I always go pretty small.
@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel
@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel 7 лет назад
On minimum I like using 12lb test as well. If im fishing heavier line like 15+ I like to use bigger baits (5 inches+). In my opinion I like the drop shot single hook technique better, because I can cast further haha
@johnavogel
@johnavogel 7 лет назад
Have you tried the Keitech Fat Swing Impact in size 3.3 yet? I am telling you bro, they kill it with spotties and hali's. They are just a bit soft and don't last that long. I use them on drop shot and also with a jig head. They look way more realistic with their colors and can match the hatch perfectly if you use bluegill flash or my favorite electric shad. Look at the electric shad and you will see that it matches the bait fish in the bays perfectly. I tried out the berkley swimming mullet the other day and the keitech outperformed it 2 fish to 1 easily. You really need to give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

I'm surprised you caught him at all. With flounder/halibut you don't set the hook on the first hit. When you feel the tug, free line it for 20 seconds or so then set. These fish don't generally eat the bait until they are back on the bottom. So you feel em grab, wait until they settle back onto the bottom and swallow then set. Good luck!
