I found this pigeon with plastic thread stuck around its foot so went in for the capture and restraint to try and help it out. Plastic and other pollution has a massive impact on wildlife, so make sure you don't litter and please try to avoid single use plastics! Thanks for watching and please subscribe for more videos coming soon!

I deal with pigeons on a regular basis as a rescuer - when I first decided to do this though, I put together a little kit I could carry in a pocket. It had scissors (different types), cream (for sore feet), some gauze (in case of a bleed) - you get the idea. With strings wrapped around the feet, always make sure to cut through them - even if you don't feel you can remove the string because it's embedded, cutting the string will help with circulation and prevent traumatic amputation of toes/feet. As for my kit, it's grown into a bigger bag with a lot of other things of use in there - I take it with me when I go to town, just in case.

Thanks for that! I went for a walk today down by the river and came across a beautiful pigeon with a wire around his foot. I didn't know what to do but I do now...In a few days, I'll have some food for the pigeons, a scissors, and a friend to help me fix him up! He or she will be as good as new. 😎

I could've used your help yesterday as I was so close to a pigeon that has this same problem. It was losing circulation around it'd foot because of string but nobody was around to help me cut the string off. Nothing I could do alone unfortunately. I could tell it was in distress. Poor little things deserve so much better on this planet than what we have left them.
@kiarazoccogoldenbonniegirl1641
If you don't know, sadly some Pigeons end up losing almost all theyr foots due to this... If a pigeon loose more than 3 fingers they can'tbe released bc the foot is almost destroyed, and when they search for food they mostly walk than fly, and it hurts for them. Know by someone who rescued Pigeons for years, and have some that sadly can't be released due to this

I must have caught 100 pigeons by now since 2018 to 2024. I have a thin nail scissors in my bag to cut off all threads and human hair, and gently remove them. I catch them when they eat and they don't see so much, over the wings and hold it quickly on my chest, so it calms down and can not flap its very strong wings. Then I prefer to sit down, put it upside down with head towards me and cut as fast as I can and let it away to the ground, I give it seeds after quickly, it don't get afraid. I try to take all threads off, also the stuck ones. I don't pull threads more into the foot but go around the toes and away. All the pigeons seem happier when one who can't walk gets freed of its threads.

Good job! I always carry small sharp pointed nail scissors and some good quality tweezers. You can really get it all out that way and pretty quick. Turn the pigeon up on its back and sit something like a cap over its face to make it extra calm. It is very very easy and you get the hang of it pretty quick.

There is a pigeon who comes to my balcony with a rope in her leg. The leg is a bit swollen. I wish I could do that but I have never catched one and I'm worrying about hurting her wings or scare her trying to catch her and failing. Her mate always is behind her trying to quit the rope with his beak but she always flies away. I don't know what can I do because the rope is very rolled around and it's not as easy as just pull it. I don't have the ability of catching pigeons like in the video and what most scares me, as I said, is hurting the wings because she moves abruptly.

@@mirollatadros2311 That is a different case. In that case you should take the pigeon to the veterinary and if he/she can't recover you must take him/her to a sanctuary where he/she can fly at least in a controlled space with other pigeons. The leg soreness should get better in time. Just clean the wound. I live in Spain I don't know about birds sanctuaries in your country.

Hey i used to remove wire/string/twine off pigeon feet for nearly 5 years while in prison. I had a theory maybe you can help...Do you know if when you take the wire off if their blood circulation causes complications or no? I figured the trapped blood coming back into the rest of its body could make it ill. (Id take ones with the wire under their skin and use something to cut the wire and then pull it out from under like a piece of spaghetti or something btw, even if i cut the little dude a bit, its better than him losing his leg)

When I remove threads with a cutacle scissors then I am all quiet, or I say some nice sounds at first, and look at her and close my eyes, to calm her. She did it perfectly, the pigeon flew downwatds to the ground at first and did not seem afraid. I work as quick as I can and concentrate only on this until I can release her. If the other pigeons have flown away, I wait until they are back, or she can get a shock and I had a few like that and they never came back. I think they might have died. They are always together. It happened once and I kept the pigeon in my arms for a few minutes and they were back as I had all the hemp seeds on the ground. They can fly away when they get scared by running children or high noises.

I did catch one yesterday. Who was injured by wires arpund the feet. First time as i hopr i didnt damage its chest by holding it firm. As someome else had to cut the rope. And we succeeded without any harm to the feet. When it flew away it did poop. I hope i did good. It couldnt walk on the foot and now it can. So can you tell me if firm is harmful because it didnt flew back to say thank you. And i did see some more animals that flew back to show their gratefulness. So sad no one else tried to catch it and looked at me as if i am a weirdo. But i couldnt let it just lose it foot and missed the train for 2 hours. At least the wire is off now.

That's the best way to break a wing accidentally. Although you never meant to hurt the creature your technique was atrocious. Crouch down on one knee and put some wheat seeds or corn in your hand and sprinkle some underneath onto the floor. Some birds will eat from your hand while some will eat the ones underneath. Slowly and gently cup the bird underneath your hand.
