My grandpa has pigeons. I spend hours as a child just sitting with a hand full of food, waiting for the newly grown up pigeons to come closer and trust me. It was very rewarding every single year; going from “too afraid to come near” to “fifty pigeons fighting over the food in my hand”. Not what most six-year-olds do for fun, probably, but I cherish those memories a lot :) (fun fact: I was allergic to them as well, but I still pushed through 😂)
Good morning and hello Frank from innisfil Ontario Canada. I'm a pigeon racer since the 70s not knowing too much about pigeons sport but really Excelled at the sport around 2006 until 2014 only to put the pigeons on hold until 2020. Now back into the hobby once again. We have the same teacher Jm. He is a book of knowledge and a great friend. Keep up with what you are doing and you will do well at your sport. I also like that you are involving the rest of your family Members that is so beautiful. GOOD LUCK and your going to do well.
@@fasterpigeons5001 good morning Frank, I like the way you tame your wild pigeons. Your right about making your birds faster by taming them. I'm sharing this with you regarding trapping. When I made this video I was just having fun with my pigeons to motivate myself. So don't forget to have fun also with them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i3XsgEUAIj8.html
I have 2 indoor pet pigeons and the first one i got, i didn’t know that I should’ve hand fed her, so i gave her a food bowl. Shes very food aggressive now to anyone who goes near her food bowl and will guard her cage even when she has free roam time. But for my second pigeon, i hand feed him and he has no aggression whatsoever, so hand feeding is a great method Ive realized
I've been researching getting indoor pigeons myself, can you tell me how your routine of handfeeding goes? How often do you do it during the day, and how much is good for one pigeon? I would really appreciate it
Interesting, I always just assumed tameness had more to do with the breed of pigeon. I’ve got a sorta tame tumbler who is not scared of me, he will even land on my shoulders but if I try to pet him or even look at him he’ll bit me.
Hi! This video is heartwarming! I’m training to befriend my unreleasble birds. I was wondering do they have food sources outside of this? Should I take away their food source and make it only me to excelerate our friendship speed? Thank you!
Look at them ..how they are eating food like they had never before . Just to make them your friend.you keep them whole day hungry. So that they can eat within your hand. I think it's a bad idea I have two white pigeons and I never try to keep their food stay away from . I think it's nature tendency after some time they will definitely be your friend. It can take some time and care
Thank you I found a baby pigeon a dog or a cat got it so wing is broken it is staying with me I want it to learn some tricks so is not so lonely it still flies to me but not on command
Hello, Great work man! I have a pigeon from the street since it was little. Now it loves me it comes to me every day. When i go to work comes to my head. Sometimes wants to sleep with me in the same room. I thing is that i want to take it outside the house to fly. I'm afraid that if i take it outside or i leave the window open it will fly and never come back. I don't want to die outside since he was at my home most of his life. There is a way going outside with it and be sure that it will come back? Happy flying!!!
Over fly during I race I assume you mean right? There are several factors to prevent this...First is feeding just enough for the bird to want to come home, if they are not hungry on race day they will just keep going as they are having a good time. The other factor is using droppers to help as a visual aid(Throw the dropper to the landing board when the group comes). The third your whistle training. Last, good luck! Lol. We all have this problem but making adjustments here and there help.
A week ago I rescued a baby pigeon and she started to fly in my apartment. I live in a tall building. I'd like to open the windows for her to fly free. But I want her to come back to her nest in my apartment. Will she come back to sleep in her nest in my apartment after flying free out there?
Me my dad and my sis went to out and we saw a pigeon in the middle of the road and it wasn't a normal one it had no hair on its head and it had holes in its head and my dad said that the crows poked her on the head it could fly so we got it home and put some ointments and it went to sleep and now its a lil better so PLS DO RESCUE IF YOU SEE ANIMALS IN A CRITICAL CONDITION
I get a massive bag of birdseed from costco, its just a mix of seeds for $30 and so far its lasted me 6 months and i still have food left over. And i mix it with pellets for chickens bc they need calcium in their diet. And a lot of people don’t recommend all seed diets, so mixing pellets in balances that out. Pigeons love millet, but sunflower feeds are my pigeon’s all time favorite. Its like candy to them
Most grocery stores sell wild bird mixes that pigeons would be fine with. Pigeons are very hardy and can survive on various grains. In your specific case a Walmart wild bird mix would be fine. I like to give peanuts as treats as well as flaxseed, rapeseed and other small oily seeds (This is called candy mix) Good Luck
how many days should you go if they still refuse to eat from you. mine has still refused since sunday and its thursday now. i dont want him to starve, it doesnt seem to be working. what should i do
Does he have access to other food? It seems unlikely that he go that long. I would try to offer the food daily from this point, but instead leave a small amount of food behind in front of him rather than taking it back. Make sure he can see it came from you. Try this for a few days and you should see a response once he associates you and the feed. Good Luck!
@@fasterpigeons5001 i still have left small bits for him each day. but he wont come toward me for food or eat from my hand, he just does not seem eager for food. and ive only left a little for him each day. not sure what im doing wrong
Perhaps not starve them but don't feed anything in between attempts. Try about two or three times per day at least. You can also reduce the amount of feed to make them a bit hungrier. Good Luck!
Pigeons eat a variety of grains (the ones you mentioned are fine). They specially like rich oily grains like safflower, flaxseed, ect. Peanuts are a favorite addiction as well. Its normal for them to loose feathers one at a time as they replace them throughout the year.
I recently got a pet pigeon and im struggling with taming it. It don't have any example to to help the pigeon figure it out. It came to me in the mail from a breeder scared of hands. It acts like the white pigeon from the video. Can you tell me how i can gain its trust so i can hand feed it? This video was very helpful, but i didn't have other pigeons.
Pigeons respond well to routine. I would make a scheduled time for feeding twice a day if possible. Once in the morning and then in the afternoon. Remove all food in between these times. In the morning offer the food in your hand briefly and wait a few seconds for it to eat. In the beginning it may not eat so you can drop a few seeds in front of it so it knows what this means. Then withdraw and try again in the next session. Give it time and repetition and it will learn that you are the source of the food. Another method is to leave a peanut or other grain in the same place each morning as you go about. Eventually they realize and will come to you for the food. Avoid sudden movements, loud noises, or grabbing it with your hands as you are doing this, they may associate you with the negative experience. Good Luck!
@@fasterpigeons5001 Thank you so much for your help! I have another question, what does it mean when it makes a throaty croaking like noise instead of cooing. It makes this sound every morning and evening. Does this mean the pigeon is unhappy or sick?
@@machinegunsally1874 It sounds like you are talking about grunting. Some birds make this sound when they are concerned by someone or something. Males grunt or coo also when calling the hen to the nest.
@@fasterpigeons5001 Ive gotten to the point where I can touch the bird without it flying away, however it refuses to eat from my hand still. The grunting isn't quiet and wakes me up every morning, i bought a female so it can't be calling for females. So something is bothering it.
PLEASE HELP. Need some advice! My druggie neighbor left his white racing pigeon in it's cage on the porch the whole summer (i live in Texas). Long story short he got kicked out and gave me and my bf the bird. We have his cage in the kitchen with it's door open. So he chills on top of his cage all the time. I feel he's really lonely, constantly at the window trying to communicate with outside birds chilling on the bird feeder. Can i let him go? Maybe he'll go straight for the trees outside the window??? Maybe he'll make a family? Maybe he'll see the other birds eat from the feeder?? Or will he fly super far away and starve to death?????? What should i do 🫣🥺
Most fanciers feed their birds 1oz per day per pigeon. I do the same while making adjustments according to the energy consumption of the birds as well as the calorie richness of the feed. Sometimes I add a bit more if it is colder and they will work hard or less if it is warmer and they will sit ect..
Yes, this a common way the pigeons defend themselves. He probably does not want to be held. If you must hold him move slow and do so gently. In the meantime continue to work with him by feeding from your hand and gently touching him as he eats. Good Luck!
I "showed" them how by making them available. If they are not willing to eat them you are probably overfeeding. You want to lay the feed down for 5 mins then remove what isnt consumed. Reduce quantities as needed...
@@fasterpigeons5001 thank you. I just rescued a single baby and I've had it for about a year now and I keep seeds in a bowl for her and she's usually just picks out the sapphire and sunflower seeds. I guess I just will leave the food in the bowl until she eats all the seeds 👍
